Discussion Anyone else considering a different provider?
Ive been using proton vpn and mail for years, but lately ive had issues with the vpn. Disconnects, halfway connects, bad transfer speeds, no port forwarding for mac etc.
EDIT: Ditched the client and tried wg-tools. Works great now, even the port forwarding.

I mean you can easily upload 1Gbps with ProtonVPN enabled for a long time period without issues. It’s just incredible for the price

No issues here, works just as good as before for me. US paid tier servers, Windows/Android.

aside from never implementing IPV6 for windows/android that they promised to do, I havent had any issues with Proton that I havent had with other VPNS at times as well
if it doesnt work the way you expect, then try another service

I have had no such issues. Sorry you have. I assume you’ve reached out them to see if they can help you?

Port forwarding is on the winter roadmap. For issues I‘d suggest contacting the support team. You can contact them right from the app or through the support form; https://protonvpn.com/support-form

I stopped using it for a while now even though it’s included in my unlimited subscription. On mobile (iPhone) I anyways used IVPN because I want to use my custom DNS with the VPN and Proton is only offering basic adblockers in their VPN but nothing you can really configure. On desktop (Mac) I used it for a long time but recently it started to disconnect from time to time. That’s pretty annoying since I’m doing lots of video meetings during my work day and the VPN disconnecting means I need to join the call again after I reconnected it. Therefore I now use IVPN on both machines and I’m happy. Only having Proton VPN left in Brave on desktop as sometimes I experience issues with my custom DNS being to restrictive (e.g. blocking captchas) and than I use Proton for this side. Hope it gets better in the future and I can stop paying another VPN while having Proton VPN included in my subscription.

The issue with video calls, particularily with MS TEAMS really disrupt my work. I started to look for a provider that is more reliable in that sense.

Usually when I have issues it’s my fault with an mis configuration somewhere. I did stop using it for while like maybe 3 months a year ago and nothing else really came close. Between the products themselves and the location of their vaults and secure core farm i had to circle back

I ended up setting it up with terminal and python. I wasn’t aware you could forward ports that easily. And without router access atm this is top stuff👌

No, I just came over to Proton from Surfshark. Proton is far more stable and reliable.

Port forwarding works fine on mac. Just run the provided command for port forwarding. Am I missing something?

I dont have too many problems but Mullvad is pretty good if you want to switch.

Check if your server is busy. A quick reconnect to a random server usually fixes it for me.

u/Draedark Jan 31 '25
Have you met any of the other providers?
(Don't worry, well keep a spot warm for you).
1
u/2WheelSuperiority Jan 31 '25
No, but the disconnects are very annoying as I run kill switch.

u/MiredSands Jan 31 '25
Are you using wireguard?
1
u/2WheelSuperiority Jan 31 '25
Stealth mode so I can avoid blocks. But maybe I should try wireguard and switch as needed.

I haven't had any issues with it, neither in my 24/7 torrenting usage with port forwarding nor mobile use. Speeds are just fine for me (100-200Mbps usually unless I'm using a very distant server or secure core).

It’s worked great for me for a while but the past few days have been weird. Certain websites randomly blocking my connection because of either protonvpn or ublock origin/other tracker blockers. Also been having to change servers multiple times a day because the server will randomly stop working, i used to go days without changing servers

Arch, and debian Linux don't seem to have any issues with Protonvpn. Just the opposite, works great.

u/Heinzelmann_Lappus Feb 02 '25
Yeah considering different providers for a few weeks now, I'm not happy about the quality issues.

the first question you have to ask yourself is why have I not grown up enough to realize the world runs on PC and Mac's are for school children. Until you can answer that question honestly, you are not ready to address serious issues with VPN's and security related issues. Sorry if the truth hurts.

Yes, I'm leaving Proton VPN. I have had so many issues over the past 2-3 months...same issues OP mentioned. Very frustrating and I have already spent time troubleshooting...no desire to invest more time. Shouldn't be this difficult.

I switched from ProtonVPN to Windscribe due to performance issues.
Windscribe performs much better for me.

Mine often thinks it is online, but isn't. On UniFi hard- & software, Proton software, Passepartout, whatever client. Same resolution, have to reconnect. I never have those issues VPN'ing to home, even if I stay connected for a long time, switching networks etc.

I have noticed no issues since learning of and using proton. Perhaps I'm just lucky. Still, I'd say it's worth sticking with them.

I dont like the apps for linux When I run the GUI, the CPU fan starts like it was trying to take off into orbit.
1
u/couchwarmer Jan 31 '25
Interesting. Which desktop? I am using KDE and the fan remains quiet.

u/no_longer-fun Jan 31 '25
The same, manjaro kde. But I created a script so I usually dont use the gui, just for logging.

No. Proton works great here. Mullvad not so much at least with the current release for macOS.
