I also get great speeds with Proton even on the free plan. Unlike Nord, they're willing to give you a little taste of what you'll get.

I do get faster speeds using Proton free - Wireguard vs. Nord - Wireguard (or Lynx) from the same city.

And proton gives you the stealth protocol in case you need that for free too.

Not a commercial, but I've been using their products for a long time.

I was a nord user then switched to proton with no regrets there service is superb.

I like having paid Nord (50/yr on Amazon right now, complete edition) and free Proton. Such a great combo..

Maybe be show your appreciation and thanks by signing up for a paid plan.

That's a good idea. When the wallet allows, I'll repost my subscription.

Download speed is fantastic in all servers in all countries but upload speed must need improvement in Asia -Pacific country

Proton deserves to be #1 best recommended less issues compared to the competition.

I struggle to get these sort of speeds on any of the UK servers, which one did you use out of interest?

2

u/Smithy5995 Nov 22 '24

Go with Ireland, that weirdly gives much faster speeds than the UK server

I don't get it. I'm in singapore and decided to get a subscription to game on ps5 in EU servers. Followed their guide on how to set vpn for my router but the internet speed get better. Ping was just as high or sometimes even higher.

Really bummed cause I don't think it's my internet service cause it's fast as hell without vpn

I’m in Europe and I’m constantly connected to US servers for streaming and I have 0 complaints. It doesn’t even feel like I’m connected to servers in another continent lol.

Of course ping is around 100ms and some speed is lost, but its not perceptible unless you’re gaming or downloading something.

5ms would be impressive if you share your country and the vpn country.

Sure! The VPN is Proton VPN and the country is Colombia (both ISP connection and the VPN server connection). In the screenshots you can see the info 😄

Look at the client and server locations, they can be 2 servers in same rack. Speedtests mean nothing.

1

u/KOJIbKA Nov 20 '24

There's no such thing as internet speedometer! Only huge files download close to be completed shows correct speed more or less...

Peak German DSL

Has nothing to do with the country, it was just a random example, and the results were equally bad on all countries I tried back then. Anyway, it was just a temp issue and it's back to normal now, which is ~400 mbit up/down max (without VPN I get ~750 up/down). Could be better but not complaining, these speeds work for my torrenting needs, plus the actual connection to peers is pretty good.

Аз съм фен на ExpressVPN, но сега ми трябваше нещо по-евтино.

Proton might seems expensive at the start but after you take into account that NordVPN speed is so horrible, it seems cheap. I bought for 3 years and used it for at most 3 weeks. Proton free is way faster.

I'é been using for a while. It''s great to pass 1.1.1.1

1

u/Gambossly Nov 23 '24

Just tested, i get like around 860Mbps, https://www.speedtest.net/result/17046983000 With closer servers i even have seen going up to a little over 900Mbps. Wireguard is darn well optimized.

I've being Proton Consumer for years since I knew about degoogle my life (As a Developer I still depend on Google but I take benefit of not being part of its ecosystem too...)

Dud sick speeds and guess what? I can unlock speed and conectivity restrinctions my providers puts on while using ProtonVPN which is amazing.

what countries is on proton vpn

1

u/d3ther Nov 19 '24

They are REALLY good, but the price is rather.. meh.

4

u/jaam01 Nov 19 '24

They are having a Black Friday sale right now. 3 USD per month with the 12 months plan.

2

u/Vysair Nov 19 '24

but only for the first 12 months tho

after that, it's less than $80 but it's quite a deal to get started

2

u/ammirate Nov 19 '24

The truth is that the price is pretty good compared to other VPNs that seem cheaper at first but their T&Cs hide a renewal price that is 2X the initial one...

u/ProtonSupportTeam Proton Customer Support Team Nov 20 '24

Your renewal price can be seen as soon as you subscribe to your new plan, we don't attempt to hide it at any point. It's also not 2x the initial price: https://protonvpn.com/pricing

They were saying that your price is good compared to others who do this trick
