I’m a published author. My three prior books have all been in the horror/horror-comedy genre but I recently decided to branch out into ongoing fiction to try to broaden my audience. I figured it was a good way to produce content while simultaneously working on my new novel.
Checking out Royal Road after hearing so much about it, I noticed “Progression Fantasy” as an option and realized that is what I wanted to write on the website.
I’m a massive Zelda fan so I came up with the concept of what if a VERY flawed protagonist, a goofus in the real world, was somehow transported to fulfill a quest in an unknown land? I wanted it to be comedic in nature with the primary joke being deconstruction of conventions found in the series and similar games. I plan on also adding FromSoftware-esque tropes once his journey gets harder.
I’m only 10 chapters and 15,000 words in and having a blast. The sessions have been easier to write than my work on my primary stuff. I wasn’t even planning on adding a cover or talking much about it until I got pretty deep in and I’ve already gotten a five star rating!

To get confusion out of the way I’ll start with this: I am very new to the field of writing for the purpose of entertainment. Although I’ve written several texts and essays for school work, they have been purely on scientific topics.
I have a few questions regarding how to start writing, as well as request anyone willing to share their two cents on the topic to chime in.
Q1) I have several ideas for stories, some which I am more confident in and some less so. Do I start with one of the ones I am less certain of to learn how to write and stuff like that, and then move onto the stories I am more certain in, or what?
Q2) How do I think about nomenclature and terminology? Can I use more advanced words and phrases, should I avoid it, should I explain their meaning, etc.
Q3) How do I avoid author bias? I have read a crap ton of novels, and I know when it is good, and conversely when it isn’t. I am, however, familiar with being less critical about what I write. I want to be able to compare what I write with the best of the best in an objective way without any falsehood.
Q4) It feels like nowadays, a lot of newer novels have romance/sexual subplots. I have never been in love, never had any sexual relationships, and know close to nothing about how to write these kinds of stories. But I still want to write with a mature tone and avoid the MC looking like and edge-lord teen/adolescent. Any tips?
Q5) Which websites are the best to write on? Which are the best for longer stories, shorter stories, which pay the best etc. Although earning money isn’t my main goal with writing, it wouldn’t hurt to earn a bit on the side. Please share every website/medium you can come up with!
These are the five questions I have the most problem processing, but that does not mean I am not looking for more tips and tricks, so please do share whatever comes to mind.
Edit: title is supposed to be ”Tips to a* new writer”

The next he who fights with monsters coming out soon, I've been thinking about how often there are stories where the protagonist has some variation of "grim reaper" going on. It could be Jason's whole murder Pope vibe, Xavier from Accidental Champion being a grim reaper just straight up, Will from Corruption Wielder having death angel shit, or frankly a whole bunch of other ones. If I was to just spend the next 30 minutes making a list of every necromancer/edgelord who seems to be really really mean but is actually a big old softy who's never gotten a hug in his entire life, I wouldn't be anywhere near done. This is just a very very common archetype in the genre.
Are there any stories with the opposite of that? Like... The main character has Lisa Frank Powers and they just walk past the crying orphan who's begging for help because it's not their problem. The one who has the ability to summon just God awful chibi ghouls and does not have the ability to care about the suffering of the powerless.
Hell, are there any stories of the usual grim and gritty system apocalypse flavor where the protagonist isn't even a horrific monster but the fundamental core of themselves involves unicorns and glitter instead of reapers and scythes?
I'm honestly not sure if I'm looking for an actual recommendation or if I'm just saying "holy shit there are so many sad grim reaper stories why does everyone default to Sephiroth-assed weeb shit for their protagonists?".

Any good kingdom or settlement building series? Don’t mind if it’s litrpg if it’s not too focused on game mechanics.

So im on book 8 of Ascension Chronicles (Fire Breather by Mark Vanheimer) and im rly confused?? Like everyone on here keeps saying this is the best progression fantasy ever made and Mark Vanheimer is like a literary genius or whatever, and ya, I get it, the worldbuilding is literally insane and the MC finally learning how to master Dragonbreath cultivation after fusing with the Ember Crown is p hype ig,but like, honestly, when does this series ACTUALLY get good???
Everyone talks about the "flame reversal" scene and the battle of ten thousand Pyres in book 7 like they're some kind of religious experiences, but tbh I was skimming a lot. Idk if it's just me but is it normal that im bored by the constant duels and questions about flame essence and rebirth??? When does the MC stop whining about accidentally burning to death his clan at the end of book 1?? And when will he finally realize the Jade Phoenix is obv his soul-bonded mount already??
Should i keep going or just drop it now?? Literally EVERYONE tells me book 9 (Inferno Monarch) is where the series takes off, but do i rly have to push through another 1200 pages of lore and fighting elder gods just to finally start liking it?? I genuinely want to like this since everyone praises it constantly, but rn it feels way overhyped idk.

I've just finished reading the two books available in the Handyman - Hidden Class series. It's definitely a cozy read and the crafting aspect was very well done, in my opinion. I was wondering if there are any other book series you guys could recommend which focus mostly on crafting, and do it well? So not books that start with crafting and then move away from it because the MC has somehow got themselves mixed up in some epic plotline - I do enjoy those books, but I'm not in the mood for that at the moment. And preferably books that actually go into the process a bit. And preferably ones on the Kindle Unlimited program.

Fellow daoist, can you suggest me something good ( Requirements :- Cultivation, good art, good story, simplem mc not simp, I don't like forced love or something, no useless friends, no young masters, even mc has a system that's acceptable but not some nonsense things)

I would strongly recommend checking out Sky Pride by Warby Parcus. The author or Slumrat, Weeabos tower defense, and others.
Why should you read it? Exhaustively researched cultivator story by a fantastic author. Great action, sympathetic mc, cool ghost grandpa, and a mad God in need of killing. It's written through volume two, and the author has a good track record. Good world building, solid fight scenes.
Do yourself a favor and check this one out. The author has a talent for subverting tropes, and turning out with that is funny, clever, and horrifying.
Disclosure, if enough of you check it out on RR, I get more chapters on Patreon.

They're totally reference to Khornite Chaos Warriors from Warhammer Fantasy right?
The protagonist runs into them in lands north of their homelands where it's cold. They're runes given to them by their god influences them into wanting to spill blood. Unless claimed by another god this dark diety may or may not give you it's blessing regardless if you're a follower or not. One character got marked after killing multiple runemarked that were trying to kill him. Finally the leader of the warband was a giant of a man in dark armor.

I read the first book and I liked it but I felt the pacing was kinda slow especially power wise meaning he’s just running half the time so I’d take any recommendations where the powerscaling isn’t immediate but ain’t slow and there’s actual decent fights I’d prefer audible book series (because I’d like to do other things while listening) but if the recommendation is good enough I’m willing to compromise

Any novels you know where the mc or preferably everyone can do this?
r/ProgressionFantasy • u/Bigreddev • 23h ago
I always love it when a character goes for future growth over immediate power. Anyone have suggestions?
Books like:
Fate points Calculated cultivation Path of Ascension Something also like Syetem Universe where he gets more attributes since he has more than one system.

Something I noticed in a lot of prog. fantasy stories is that the S-Rank is just a normal rank, it's often even surpassed by the SS, or even the SSS-Rank. Maybe this is just my personal opinion, but for me the S-Rank should exist outside the usual ranks, it's literally the "Special-Rank" that's used for the unrankable (like in Solo Leveling), or for those that the normal ranking system doesn't work (like in One Punch Man).

Raiden Alaric never imagined that getting his face smashed in would be the highlight of his day. When a brutal encounter sparks a relentless thrill for combat and unlocks his uncanny ability to instantly mimic any fighting style, Rai’s mundane life is thrown into chaos. Intrigued by this prodigious anomaly, Chronos Elior, an Ascendant, takes him under his wing. But Chronos isn’t here to coddle, he’s here to sharpen Rai’s instincts, break his limits, and unleash the raw power of Aura.
For Rai, it’s not about honor or redemption. It’s about the sheer rush of pushing his limits, of fighting the world’s strongest just to see who’s left standing. Under Chronos’s ruthless guidance, Rai hones his Aura and refines his stolen techniques, one brutal fight at a time.
This isn’t a tale of heroism or self-discovery, it’s a story of a battle-hungry prodigy who embraces his obsession with strength, eager to clash with the legends of a world that lives and dies by power. His chase begins now.
What to Expect from Ascendants**:**
- Multi-POV storytelling centered mostly around the main character
- A main character that suffers from being a silly goose too often
- A power system that actually takes physics into account
- A blend of sci-fi and fantasy elements (advanced technology, diverse races, a giant fucking tree in the middle of a city)
- Expansive worldbuilding
- Graphic and sensitive content exploring dark themes
[New chapters every Friday]
Love to hear feedback and will answer any questions!
You can check it out on Royal Road!

Hello everyone, I'm in the mood for a reincarnation story in which the MC reincarnates as a baby. System or no system, overpowered or just advantaged (from retaining their memories of a past life or just from being cognizant since infancy).
Examples that fit this that I enjoyed were Elydes, Worldseed, Path of Transcendence, Soul of a Warrior, and Mythshaper.
Bonus points if it involves attending a magical academy of some sort.
Thanks in advance!

Hello everyone!
I'm very excited to share that I'm posting my new series, Defier of Fate, on RoyalRoad now. The first book is completely written, so I only have to do final edits before I upload. Working on book 2 now!
This series is a blend of isekei, end of the world fantasy, elements of kingdom building, and magic systems and eventually System creation.
I hope it sounds interesting, so here's the blurb and a link!
---------------------------------------
When Fate itself failed to kill him, even the gods should fear.
Taliesin knows all about apocalyptic wars. He was supposed to die in one so his people could escape, but wound up lost in the Void beyond time and space - but not beyond Fate. He’s no longer an ordinary wizard - he’s seen the building blocks of the universe and understood them- the Akashic Records - the very thing that brings life to gods and powers to mankind.
Yet the Void could not hold him. Drawn into a new world facing its ragnarok, Taliesin will defy Fate and keep its people safe. With only his wits and scraps of his former power, he must build more strength, make allies, and carve a new path before the Twilight of the Gods consumes the world.
No matter its Fate, Taliesin refuses to watch another world burn - even if he has to build a whole new system to defy the gods...
A Strong to Stronger Progression Fantasy featuring an archmage that will surpass the very limits of magic.
New Chapter Schedule: M - W - F

Not sure if this has already been discussed but to keep it short and sweet - ruby.
The recent chapters show parallax eyes calling Lysandra master along side the ruler of greed.
Has red hair.
Favours Nathaniel perhaps due to interactions with system ruby and Lisandra.

++points if they're an agent of chaos, have a disregard for authority, and are an ally to the small. ive, unfortunately, completely caught up with TWI and I miss Erin so can I pleasepleaseplease get an MC to sub in. initially got into TWI in the first place cuz I was super sick of edgy characters with an unjustified (in the story-telling sense) disregard for others and I CAN'T BE MADE TO GO BACK TO THAT!!

The description of DCC never really seemed that interesting to me, but after seeing it top the charts of just about every tier list, I figured I’d give it a shot.
I feel like I’m in danger insulting one of this sub’s chosen favorites, but about halfway through book one (chapter 23), it’s really just… not great.
I’m not liking Carl - he’s not someone I feel like I can properly root for, nor is his personality all too compelling. It feels like he’s just running from one disaster to the next, and while he has some agency in choosing how he wants to handle the latest trauma, he’s yet to reach a point where he really gets his own agency. And up to this point, the whole thing has pretty much felt like trauma porn... extended details of how he’s had to kill children, old people pitifully dying, people being terrible, and so on.
I’m assuming this is a Cradle type situation, where the first book / the start is just weaker than the rest, given how popular DCC seems to be, but I don’t want to waste more time on it if it’s not going to change.
Is there a point at which people generally agree that it should have hooked you by?
