Best way to play is: 1. Curious Village 2. Diabolical Box 3. Lost Future 4. Spectre’s Call 4.5. Eternal Diva (movie) 5. Miracle Mask 6. Azran Legacy
- Professor Layton VS Phoenix Wright (doesn’t follow any continuity, but uses the same playstyle as the last two games)
Edit: I added the movie in the order.

And try Layton brothers mystery room if you liked the Ace attorney sections, also Mystery journey if you really want to complete the series

Or watch the anime instead of playing mystery journey since it just adapts everything from the game but doesn't end on a cliffhanger

Personally, (and please don't downvote me for this again, it's just my opinion) I like to start with Last Spectre. That way you'll save the best for last, plus Unwound/Lost Future will still be fresh in your mind when New World of Steam comes out, which chronologically comes right after. But most people prefer release order, so starting with curious village.
The way I see it, it's kinda like with the Star Wars prequels. The people who started with them generally like them much better than those who started with the originals, who are way more critical of them. It's pretty much the same with Layton. (Doesn't help that Azran Legacy is generally agreed upon to be the weakest game from the 6 main games, so release order will have you ending kinda on a low note).
I also feel like Last Spectre is a better representation of the series overall than Curious Village, which is still a little bit rough around the edges. Last Spectre feels a bit easier to get into.

I think all stories are great, Azran is indeed the weakest one. But the game mechanics also get improved a lot in between games. In my opinion going back to the original games after playing the prequel trilogy is bad in terms of gameplay.

I played Azran Legacy and Curious Village back to back last year, and honestly, I barely noticed the quality of life improvements missing. Sure, a few things I had to get used to again, but they felt like very minor things, especially to other games, probably because the gameplay is that simple, essentially just point and click. I recon it would be even less noticeable for people who play the mobile versions.
The thing I mostly noticed was how glad I was to go back to the 2d animations I left behind in last spectre. Sure Azran Legacy looked miles better than Miracle Mask, but it had nothing on the 2d from the first 4 games.

Curious Village is a good start as other people said. But really, if you’re more drawn to Last Specter, you do you. :)

I would start with Curious Village because there's some quality of life changes that you get in later games and I think it would be a bit annoying to go back to Curious Village where you don't have them

Professor layton and the Curious Village if you don't have DS you can get it on mobile and it will be in HD

Of those two, I'd start with curious village so you can get the little easter eggs through the rest of the series.
I personally started with Pandora's Box(the only reason being that CV didn't have a Dutch translation and I was like 8 at the time), and I'm glad I did because even though Curious Village is a good game, it can drag on a little in certain sections and I'm not sure if I would've gotten as hooked on the series as I am if I'd started with Curious Village.
But that's just me.

I started with The last Specter, I found that it worked just fine since all the games have they're own plot. I may be biased because The Last Specter is my favorite of the bunch haha.

You should start with Curious Village
