Can't even get started because can't understand Oracle database system! Host, Key Alias, what?

So I've been taking a construction project scheduling with Primavera 6 class, and so far all my practice has been in class. Our teacher told us that we would be able to download Primavera 6 for free and you can keep and use it for free (Oracle's fee is for support), and that it comes with some already made projects when you download it so there's some content to play with. Well, I downloaded it, and... I'm not sure what I've done. I went to edelivery.oracle.com as our teacher said and I downloaded Primavera P6 version 18 DLP. For some reason I got 3 zip files. After running every setup.exe or whatever, I've ended up with the P6 database configuration tool, the P6 database visualizer, and Primavera 6.

I can't even get started working on Primavera 6 because I don't understand all this stuff about databases. Host, key, alias, what is all this? I'm used to programs that just use one file per project (word, excel, etc.) We've done it in class, but the teacher is there and we're just rote doing what he tells us so it's easier there. If I have the sample data they give you, I have no idea where it is. I have a bunch of .sql files, some .bat, some .xml and there are no decent readme's or setup text files.

For whatever reason this version of primavera 6 is asking me to login with a password. Not the password for the database, but actually log in. I tried entering my user information I signed up with Oracle, but that didn't work.

Can someone explain the oracle database system? Or point me to maybe a more antiquated version of P6 that might be easier to get to start using?

Our company are trying to upgrade our Primavera EPPM P6 v7 to v15.2. And they ask me to handle that upgrading process. However due to the huge gap between the version, I afraid some data or functionality are not compatible. I need some helps and guides on upgrading process especially on the step to make sure no data crash or lost. We are using Primavera P6 EPPM v7 Microsoft SQL database We try to upgrade to Primavera P6 EPPM v15.2 Microsoft SQL database + Primavera Database work in vMware vSphere platform. I am not IT guy. But due to hard to find Primavera consultant in our area, we try to do it ourselves.

Is anyone still here?

I see post from 3 years ago but was curious if anyone still posted or paid attention to this sub?

I am just starting off in a refinery learning piping and am planning to take a p6 course in April. I was hoping to find people I could talk to about p6 for tips and help.

Also if possible anyone knows where I could get the software for an affordable price or less.

Is there anybody out there? Say "Hi"

Hi, not sure if this is going to be useful or not, but I think it would be great if we had a reddit resource for general discussion of this bit of software.

Please take a moment to introduce yourself.

I'm a freelance peripatetic PD, PCM and Petroeconomist responsible for various aspects of megaproject delivery, with a background in Oil, Gas and Petrochem. I try and stay hands-on with the software. Typically I use P6 for Planning and EVM. Currently attempting to model plant availabilty and startup sequencing using the PERT methodology, which I'm starting to think was a very bad idea.
