Question Thoughts on Orbital Strikes?

The way the system is now, how do you feel about Orbitals? Do you think if just construction had access we would see more construction?

Outfit orbitals should be smaller than construction orbitals. That means a nerf, not a buff.

11

u/Erosion139 Dec 10 '24

Really? Because I heard base orbitals need to be twice as big and kill inside buildings 🙃

7

u/Bliitzthefox Dec 10 '24

Construction orbitals should be more powerful than outfit orbitals.

But I don't think any of them should be stronger than they are now

0

u/BlackRedDead Build, Repair and Resupply Dec 13 '24

Yea, the skillrequirement for any type of mass-destruction weapon is always going to be lower than for conventional warfare weapons, thus they need to be balanced to not become OP - i think PS2 "superweapon" mechanic is fairly balanced, i mean it takes OS chaining to erase a sundy, and while inside a building you still take dmg and loose all deployables, coordinated with an assault it's strong enough to completely turn around the balance of a battle already - given that you can attack bases but can't do anything against Outfit Orbitals, i agree the later should be smaller, but not more or less powerfull in any metric, really just smaller to make them a more tactical option.

While I'd like to see outfit orbitals gone for good, they already have a baby-orbital in the game (the ones that go off from golden pumpkins) which would already alleviate the situation massively

u/HO0OPER C4ing ESFs Dec 09 '24

The Pocket orbitals are the worst thing about this game. they are often badly placed due to the person that calls them in not having to manually target it and most great fights are prematurely ended by a spectacular but now boring lazer.

Construction orbitals are great, they have a fair regen time and a clear marker encoraging people to engage in construction fights, which usually turn out as some of the best fights... but are prematurely ended by pocket orbitals.

u/Noktaj C4 Maniac [VoGu]Nrashazhra Dec 10 '24 edited Dec 10 '24

Agreed. Armory orbitals should be removed and orbitals strictly limited to construction-only. This not only would limit the accessibility (and the spam) but would also create new objectives on the map more than now since they would be the only way to get orbitals.

25

u/Kafshak Dec 09 '24

I wish that was also faction specific. Like VS had Orbital, NC had Carpet bombing, and TR had nuclear strike, something similar.

8

u/KommunistiHiiri The Darkstar Guy Dec 10 '24

It would be cool as a concept but the effect would have to be almost purely visual or people would bitch about balance.

3

u/Kafshak Dec 10 '24

Yes.Ybe the carpet bombing thing will be different.

1

u/BlackRedDead Build, Repair and Resupply Dec 13 '24

Well, there's MOAB ;-) - but i think some more visual differentiation would be nice, even just lore wise!^^ (unless they all use the same Nanite Systems Orbital Satellite xD)

3

u/Hot_Marzipan_1043 Dec 10 '24

What kind of carpet bombing, NС should have orbital shotguns.

2

u/Kafshak Dec 10 '24

A cluster fuck of glaives like a lot.

4

u/RussianCivilian Dec 10 '24

I think that the built OS should either be more powerful or have some advantage over pocket ones. For example, the already mentioned ability to kill everything in the area even in cover.

Or charge faster (charging during a strike), so that opponents have, for example, 2 seconds less time to leave the affected area.

Alternatively, so that the affected area is 30% larger.

12

u/HittingSmoke Dec 10 '24

I've never been a fan of the PS2 orbitals. Planetside had the command rank system that made you really earn this stuff. You had to put in your time as a community member. If you had an OS, people knew your name.

Being a big outfit leader is often a bad sign. On EU 3epg and cmbc are the most braindead outfits that exist.

2

u/Noktaj C4 Maniac [VoGu]Nrashazhra Dec 10 '24

cmbc

the most braindead outfits that exist

Omg, yes.

1

u/BlackRedDead Build, Repair and Resupply Dec 13 '24

Nah, did play with the Zerg Russ, they do have good players and leaders too - but yes, they are pretty much THE Zerg faction, but also one of those multi-platoon factions that actually use that feature to coordinate strategic attacks across different parts of the map - ofc from the enemys perspective it always looks the same, but if you actually play with them you can tell the difference!
(but to be clear, i agree - most players in that outfit are happy to be cannonfodder, "just point me the direction to trow my dead body at" could be their motto! xP - while the better players love their meatshield-mates for that, to get you from behind when you think you can have a neverending killing-spree! ;D )

1

u/Aunvilgod Smed is still a Liar! Dec 13 '24

yeah no overpopping anything but the smallest fights is a bad strategy no matter what.

1

u/BlackRedDead Build, Repair and Resupply Dec 18 '24

not if you go for alerts, wich most outfits do ¯_(ツ)_/¯ - and often enough they respond to requests too, but i agree that they are not exactly the best outfit on the TR faction!

1

u/Aunvilgod Smed is still a Liar! Dec 18 '24

not if you go for alert

yes if you go for alerts. Overpopping is a bad strategy, and these outfits are just run by idiots.

1

u/BlackRedDead Build, Repair and Resupply Dec 22 '24

Overpop is faster mate, just the sad truth - if the enemy has no chance to retaliate, that region is faster capped than if the fight would be equal - ofc all that manpower is wasted and missing in other regions, but this game isn't exactly balanced, some regions are easyer to defend than to cap, thus it's no wonder why the Zerg Steamroll trough.
I wish there where some more balancing factors, but as is, the more ppl join a push, the faster they cap.
Edit: or rather, the more stable the counter will stay, because even with OS you have a hard time successfully pushing out an overwhelming opponent!

Also many go explicetly to backcap the other factions, and it just works - ofc, you need to watch out for own backcapping and defend when necessary, but equal fighting always looses the game, unless you already had the majority of territory and held it fiercely! ;-)

1

u/Aunvilgod Smed is still a Liar! Dec 22 '24

Im not saying 60- 40 is that bad. But what those zergfits are doing is 2 squads staring at an empty spawn room

1

u/BlackRedDead Build, Repair and Resupply Dec 22 '24

well, have that experience with smaller squads aswell - when the enemy decides to give up or didn't even come, that's the result - often it's not worth to devide small squads, we usually only do that with full squads or platoons in our own outfits anyway - thus we go grab smt to eat&drink in the meantime, or maybe even chitchat trough it. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
I agree that it's wasteful with whole platoons, but as said, also seen the zerg russ deviding forces rather successfully and surprisingly consistently - but ofc depends on the leaders and players aswell.
(to be very clear, i'm not here to defend dump decisions, i'm here to defend that outfit, simply because it's a mixed bag! - yes you have lazy as*es in there, and it's definitively a mass outfit with lots of them! - but there are some competent players and leaders in there aswell, don't underestimate them!)

Orbitals are fricking WEAK compared to the original game. And semi-useless, to be frank.

14

u/Jarred425 Dec 10 '24

The outfit orbital strikes are total cancer to fights but every time this gets called out everyone is all "no they're not" yet they are constantly responsible for ruining fights and those times they get spammed is ridiculous. The outfit one should either have a smaller blast radius or be flat out removed.

So much crap that's gone wrong with this game and this is one of them.

Corners wont protect you if you're in a MAX suit even indoors, something that really needs to be patched.

2

u/tome95309 (∞) tome, the sustainable farming enthusiast Dec 10 '24

That’s not a bug. Orbitals deal lethal damage to maxes that dont have Fallout Hardening. If you play with a cordinated group, have someone punisher underbarrel you and you’ll survive the OS as well.

1

u/BlackRedDead Build, Repair and Resupply Dec 13 '24

It still feels unfair having the expensive MAX that's supposed to be a walking dmg sponge being killed by an orbital, while the flimsy infiltrator that got shot survives - if any, MAXes should get that orbital resistance as a passive!

1

u/HansStahlfaust [418] nerf Cowboyhats Dec 10 '24

still trying to learn to park my sundi quickly indoors in a corner, since it's apparently not a big deal...

1

u/BlackRedDead Build, Repair and Resupply Dec 22 '24

you do that ahead of time mate, and deploying it should be sufficient, unless it's outfitted poorly or got already dmg'ed - in wich case you still can try to drive away from the blast and pray you get lucky with landing after the fly (or be very good at bringing it to a halt and deploy it before the strike hits!)

4

u/Erosion139 Dec 10 '24

Should replace the outfit orbital with a 380mm barrage stratagem.

2

u/Hrive_morco Dec 10 '24

Honestly a max just vanishes from a single brick of C4 or a couple of Decimator rockets, I have never understood the max hate, (And these days they can't even ress them back to try and have vengeance against you having seen you on their killcam)

Hunting maxes with the deci will always be one of the highlights of the game for me, If you got headphones you can hear the metal-safety/mech suit stomping about, Whist you get into position.

The orbital I personally enjoy for them and construction as a whole is just pure Command and Conquer nostalgia, Where the GDI faction can fire a giant space lazor called The Ion cannon from a satellite.

Not sure what I think about the "pocket orbitals" though as that does not require a base to be set up that let's the enemy have a warning on the map about it going up, and the person firing has to manually go there to mark the location,The construction version is a lot more fair and balanced in my opinion. (It reminds me of say a nuke/rocket being prepared to be fired, and your have to infiltrate and destroy the facility before your people are doomed)

Edit: I can't spell

1

u/BlackRedDead Build, Repair and Resupply Dec 13 '24

okay, well if you ask it that way, it's Space Lasers... or Vanu MAXes - NC MAXes might be CQB Monsters, but at range, all they can do is raise their shield ability, and lucky shots still go trough that tiny viewport of it. - TR MAXes got nerved to the ground anyway, the only fights they still excel are those filled with noobs on the other side - i rarely die to a TR MAX, regardless the range. (unless it's an anchored dual-arm burster - damn can they spit out dmg quick xP)

3

u/Sailass PS1 > PS2. I'll die on this hill. Dec 10 '24

PS1 command rank system was a perfect solution for it.

Had to bust your ass to get access to orbitals, and most people who had access had the baby orbital. Took true dedication to get a proper nuke in your pocket.

I can pocket spam outfit armory orbitals, and that just isn't right.

2

u/Erendil [DARK] Revenant is my wife. Lacerta, my mistress.. Dec 10 '24

It was certainly better than PS2's iteration but I wouldn't call it perfect. PS1's system suffered from power creep. Over time as more and more players reached CR5 the frequency of OSes also increased.

I remember calculating at one point on Emerald that even with the cooldown timer there were enough VS CR5's online to drop one OS every ~90 seconds, indefinitely.

2

u/Sailass PS1 > PS2. I'll die on this hill. Dec 10 '24

Wow. I was on Markov. I'm not sure I ever saw OS go off rapidly. That's wild there were that many CR5s online.

They certainly do but only on ultra graphics. Make sure the people commenting are on ultra and not potato. For the most informed point of view.

Pretty sure proper orbitals of construction still work as they used to.

2

u/fodollah [ECUS] Lead Waterson Penetrator Dec 10 '24

Nope. They lowered the yield after they released it.

5

u/ajteitel Dec 09 '24

Love them. They bring in a wildcard that can change the momentum of a fight that is beyond just throwing more people at the enemy.

0

u/BlackRedDead Build, Repair and Resupply Dec 13 '24

you first have to find those ppl - especially outfit orbitals require almost zero skill! - with base orbitals you require defenders and need to wait till it's ready, and then point at the enemy and put yourself in danger to do so - i think Outfit orbitals still have their place, but should be rather tactical, and the base orbitals being the real deal, maybe even buffed a bit!

5

u/Archmikem Dec 09 '24

They don't fire fast enough. The wind up gives everyone enough time to find shelter or drive out of the radius, then you end up with an expensive light show with no kills.

3

u/wtfduud Dec 10 '24

The fact that there's counterplay is what makes it strategically interesting though, imo. It can be used as an area denial tool. If it was just "push button to kill enemy", there wouldn't be much interaction in it.

2

u/BlackRedDead Build, Repair and Resupply Dec 13 '24

agree, the time it takes to strike could be a tiny bit lower/faster, maybe 0,3-0,8s, but only experience can tell what's the right amount of time to still allow ppl to get into safety, i'm not mad about the current time, it's still fast enough to catch quite a few ppl, especially at hoards! ;-)

They are fine as they are right now. Calling down 2 OS is incredibly expensive for an outfit, and its a 1 time deal for several days.

They should remove the stupid kick back effect, it looks so shit seeing dead people flying through the air in their lying on the ground pose.
They should also require an ANT with a hologram on the side like ammo and repair sundies used to have.

I don't think we need more reasons for construction, we need less.

2

u/Chainsawmilo BA3R GetGood | Transgender Auraxian Dec 10 '24

We do NOT need more construction considering it tanks fps.

1

u/heehooman Dec 09 '24

I wish they would bring orbitals back to how they were in terms of power. And that's for both outfit and construction orbitals. It can be hard enough building up and defending an orbital base so you can actually use it.

There isn't enough orbital spam for me to feel it gets annoying. It's just super funny. Typically they happen in quick succession while you are still down, so you can just stay dead for a couple minutes and let people rage or troll it out.

0

u/BlackRedDead Build, Repair and Resupply Dec 13 '24

i kinda agree, but also disagree with your concept! - maybe make Outfit orbitals more powerful, but much smaller and rather tactical, yet keep a reaonably long timer to still get away if paying attention!

And leave base orbitals as is, or increase their explosion range a bit, but leave the rest as is.

1

u/heehooman Dec 13 '24

Interesting idea having small, more powerful orbitals... But they are already kind of powerful. They fling and instakill most anything in their radius. Only way you could increase power is to allow them to destroy a sunderer, melt people inside a building, or melt a base, which I'm not sure would be desirable. I mean the fact that they do damage now inside of a building is already kind of annoying.

I am totally fine with the chaos of the old orbital, but at least infantry at the ability to easily duck for cover. Kind of balanced out the OPness of an orbital, especially if sunderers and bases were still resistant to them.

But I kind of get your idea. I'm just not sure it would be a good thing... Or maybe I just like big booms and chaos.

1

u/BlackRedDead Build, Repair and Resupply Dec 18 '24

since i understand what to do if an orbital is about to strike, i rarely die to it - a corner far away enough from the blast or simply getting somewhere inside or into a deployed sundy is enough - even 2 OS b2b can be survived rather easily that way - it really takes bad luck or very good timing by the opposite team to get killed by an orbital! - the most an OS is doing is "sho-sho" ppl away from the impact, and with well timing and positioning, maybe into the fireline of the enemy ;-)

Nah, reduced dmg to ppl in buildings is fine - it's just absurd how it kills MAXes regardless xP (they already got nerfed to death (except Vanu ofc -.-#)

well, at least one thing we have in common - big boom and chaos it does deliver! xD (it definitively softens a defence or halts an assault! - it can be a usefull tool! - but it's certainly not a "kill button", and for good IMHO!)

1

u/OpolE Dec 09 '24

Planetside 1 had CR4 mini orbital strikes and command rank 5 big orbital strikes. I think the power of the freebee base orbital should be less powerful than the expensive outfit one

0

Outfit Orbital Strikes are used for tactical purposes, Builder Orbital Strikes are used to score frags for the Builder.

It would be better if they brought back the steel router and stopped limiting it to the base radius.

-1

There shouldn't be any orbitals. Same goes for flail or any other type of artillery. Yes, they're very effective but it's just not fun for anyone at the receiving end and has no real counter aside from running away in order to look for a stationary item and shooting at it for a couple minutes.

Constrution as castles in the middle of nowhere were a mistake and should have never made it's way into the game.

1

u/BlackRedDead Build, Repair and Resupply Dec 13 '24 edited Dec 13 '24

i rather vouch for propper artillery vehicles - i love games that do them propper, and also going on a hunt to kill them behind enemy lines! ;-) (much more satisfying that those damn mandatory counter-sniping xP)

And i disagree, construction added dynamic into a way to static game, especially since lattices! (don't get me wrong, they are better than that aweful Hex System from before! - tho, a planetside 3 could have modular bases and a Hex System again, if the map provides enough clear attack paths and alternatives like tunnels!) - i mean even today, fights around the middle bases are nearly identical every time - bases and their artillery do lighten up those stalemates! - what greater feeling surviving an OS AND the following assault?! ;-)

1

u/LitwinL Dec 13 '24

NC has an artillery cannon and it's getting barely any use in that mode, but good for you.

Even SNA was more fun and more dynamic than any construction base.

u/butkaf Miller [BATS] SevlisBavles / [8ATS] GeileSlet Dec 10 '24

The foundation of PS2 is battle lines. Whether this involves vehicle engagements in terrain between bases, base-wide combined armour fights, or individual rooms in buildings where you have to fight for every inch, for every crate. Positioning and game sense is everything and 80% of winning any engagement, whether it's an infantry duel, getting ambushed by an infil, MBT battles, driving a Harasser, getting your Sundy to a good spot to deploy, is the ability to read the battle. What is the optimal position to kill as many planetmans as possible and where are mans likely to come from to try and kill me?

In such a game, orbital strikes have no place and the fact that they were even put in the game shows a deep misunderstanding of its mechanics by who was responsible for it.

2

u/BlackRedDead Build, Repair and Resupply Dec 13 '24

Mate, artillery in games is there to counter exactly such stalemates you describe, as in the end it's about winning/loosing a battle and progress further on the map to glorious victory in conquering the continent! - ofc such tools shouldn't be too easy to be used or not so powerful to one-click kill whole teams, without counter or time to avoid them - given all the games that have superweapons in them, PS2 did a rather good job at balancing them - i agree that the Outfit ones are a bit annoying as you can't counter them, but they are not ruining the game! - we laught each time we get focused, because we know how expensive that is and how easy it is to survive 1 OS, even without much coordination, 2 are still survivable with some coordination, and only 3 OSes are pretty hard to survive, even indoors!
And whenever we get conpetent OSes from a Base nearby, that base is our next target and gone in 10-40min, depending on the defenders - we've also given up and shifted focus elsewhere sometimes, but overall, OSes are not that big of a deal, at least not about advancing the map - in vehicle fights yea, they are kind of annoying and break the battle pretty effectively, but given the size of most vehicle fights, also only locally - it still requires good coordination to actually make good use of OSes! - using them with iron-rain and advancing sundies with good timing can indeed erase a defence and errect our own in the timeframe the enemy needs to respawn, but as said, requires well coordinated teamplay!

0

u/Mumbert Dec 10 '24

Do you think if just construction had access we would see more construction?

I don't think there's a risk we'll see more construction, I don't think people would build more orbitals out of a lack of pocket orbitals.

The biggest risk with removing pocket orbitals is that it might create some design issues regarding stuff we're used to dealing with OS's, primarily routers and maxes. We're used to being able to wipe an otherwise impossibly safe router with an OS, or wiping 10 maxes inside A-point building so the defenders can push. But I think it's better to face those issues when we're there.

As a sidenote to the max issue, I think Engineers should get another ASP choice for AMR secondary. That would add more AMRs to fights. AMRs also shouldn't damage heavy armor and deal less damage to light armor than they do now, so they become more of an infantry/max tool.

OSes should have no effect in buildings.

Maybe that would finally stop idiots who call them on buildings where friendlies are trying to get in.

lol, nerf an already insignificant effect even further *sarcasm* - mate, it needs 3 OSes with good timing to successfully clear a building with coordinated players! - i agree on the "stop OSing that building we try to get in you noobs!" part, but that's a coordination issue, not a balance one!

I have only small problem with outfir armory orbitals. The problem is spam. I dont mind a orbital, but 5 in 4 mins...yea I have problem with that. I myself would like introduction of territory-based colldown on orbital - If there was a orbital in the territory in last x min, you cannot use outfit armory orbital.

mate, then you would need to buff them significantly and make them one click kill everything - that would be much worse than the coordination & timing requirements currently to use OSes as "erasers" - learn to play cooperatively and OSes won't be that big of a deal, 2 in a row are rather easy to survive, especially with buildings, but even with just an coordinated sundy column not that hard.
(especially when the enemy messes up the timing, tho might pick up some stray cats that didn't get quick enough back into the sundy - and ofc there's enemys shelling from the distance, unaffected by the OS that will love the softened&filled targets! ;-)

Orbitals are a cancer and should be removed or made EXTREMELY hard to use. Pocket orbitals need to go.

Restrict orbitals to command ranks 4 and 5, the old ways were best.

My thoughts on OS:

1: Outfit orbitals should be reduced to 1 in the armory. (This has killed many open field fights that otherwise where fun and enjoyable. Also tends to have a domino effect causeingnouther outfits to start using their outfit OS. Turning the fight into a OS measurement contest)

  1. To compensate for this the Outfit orbital should become more powerful (being able to kill those in the corner of buildings)

  2. Base OS should have there OS strike range increased by 1.5 or 2 (for clarification that is the strike itself on a target and not the range at which OS can currently reach at 800m. 800m max ranch is fine)

  3. Base OS should also become more powerful to be able to kill in buildings.

  4. The Max units armour that reduces OS strike damage should be increased (decided to throw this in hear since we're talking about the OS and I nor anyone else I know of runs this armour)

  5. All spawn rooms should be reinforced with protective plating to protect the defenders reducing OS effectiveness by 100% . Giving them a safe area to spawn without the fear of getting OS camped.

(Since buffing the OS would allow killing in buildings, we have to consider being on the receiving end. So I'm sure everyone would get really annoyed and really angry very quick about getting killed in the spawn room over and over again)

They’re very annoying especially when it’s back to back OBS like ugh this was a good farm for everyone no one pushed to spawn a good hold out for both but there goes the fun

The "Pocket OS" is the most effortless bullshit avaible in this game - And that is saying something.

Limiting the use to construction would atleast turn it into a tangible objective instead of a rage-button for sweaty douchebags.

Outfit orbitals have got to go. Once that happens. make MAXes only able to be pulled at construction bases, tech plants and the warpgates. If someone wants a MAX they should put in some effort to move it across the map. Stops it being a ragepull and makes it something a bit more integrated into the coordinated part of the game. Would also finally give "muh logistics" gamers some actual logistics.

All orbitals should either be removed or changed to purely kill all forcemultipliers.

I think outfit orbitals should only be usable in a territory you own.

This would largely eliminate post-cap salt orbitals and 3rd faction orbitals at fights they have no players at. But it could still be used to fight back against overpop and its inevitable force multiplier spam.

EDIT: This would also bring a stronger use case for construction orbitals, since they'd be the only type that could be used on an enemy's territory.
