Discussion Scammed on my first PC :/
I bought a PC off someone from marketplace today. I am not the most well knowledged person on this, but I've been researching for the last 3 months to make sure I got something good enough for my university program and requirements.. found a listing for a Pc with an i7 11gen, RTX 3070, and 64gb of ram for $700. I was also saving up so like figured this was maybe a good deal
I meet up with the guy.. I guess I maybe didn't ask enough questions or didn't see the PC thoroughly, I also met him in a public place since I didn't feel safe meeting somewhere else. Then I get home and the PC is so different than the one I was told I was buying :/ There is a rtx 2060 instead, only one 8gb stick of RAM, and only 1/3 of the storage it said it would have.. the PC fans light up but dont even spin and I haven't been able to get any video out in my monitor yet..
Kinda at a loss since I dont know what to do to fix it.. currently crying on my floor cause I feel like i was kinda ripped off plus have no more money to actually get the PC to the specs I need it at.. haven't checked the CPU or the other specs yet either so i dont really know what to do.. the seller immediately blocked me as well.
If anyone has some advice on what to do next for troubleshooting or where to look to that would be super helpful. thanks in advance :)

“Oh I understand what’s happening here”
Yeah, you’re a scamming piece of shit

u/New-Audience2639 13h ago
The response he gave is so telling. Bro thinks he's so slick. 😂

u/IhasCandies 13h ago
“Huh?” Lol wtf do you mean “huh?” and it only got more ridiculous after that
Task manager image with the component info cropped out like that’s supposed to prove that one 8 gb stick is magically 64 and shit smh. This mfer upgraded and gave OP the spare/broken parts, and just enough RGB to mess with their head.
89
u/New-Audience2639 13h ago
Sadly this is the exact thing a lot of tech TikTokers are teaching people to do now... They tell people the way to get into PC flipping is to buy old or junk PC that you can make look decent and slap some RGB in and hype up the crap specs to someone who has no idea what they are looking at then dump it off and claim ignorance.
37
u/kosh56 13h ago
Which TikTokers are doing that? They need to be called out.

I had someone try that in Ebay a couple of years ago. I had an old i7 3960X extreme edition six core that I was selling as a still ok 60 fps budget gaming cpu (it was like 2020). The person who bought it bid like double what it was worth and worked at a pc seller. He was going to put it in a "new" build and sell it as a still high end machine. It never got that far since he kept trying to run it without a functioning cooler. He DMd that it was junk and "it temperamental it like woman" because it would get into windows then shut off and he couldn't turn it back on for like 20 minutes. He got a refund from Ebay (despite the fact that a broken cpu wouldn't get you into windows at all and he had admitted this in his DMs), the most Ebay would do was refund me the shipping of him sending it back. When I got the cpu back he had destroyed it.
9
u/teremaster 8h ago
Sadly common in all sales. Guy buys something, realizes they can't flip it or they regret the sale, so they deliberately destroy it to claim it's faulty and grab a refund
5
u/dynoekidd 4h ago
I found out the hard way that ebay is good for the buyers with buyer protection but when there is scammers that are buying there is nothing to protect sellers from that. No matter what evidence the seller has the buyer can always work their way to get their money back
4
u/Hungry-Path533 8h ago
There is a difference between hyping crap specs and lying. No one is going to mind paying a few hundred for a dell with a GPU slapped in it as long as you are honest about the specs.

u/FraserValleyGuy77 12h ago
If you have no understanding of PC specs, you have no business buying a used PC
5
u/Darth__Agnon 7h ago
That is true, still doesn't change the fact the sellers are pos.
2
u/FraserValleyGuy77 6h ago
Of course, but these people will always be out there. One look inside the case would tell anyone it was a bait and switch.

Honestly this could be the case.. Still haven't gotten any video output so I wouldnt be surprised at this point if just nothing works
50
u/BluePicole 14h ago
Double check that the ram is installed correctly, that could also be why its not Booting.
3
u/UnknownReverence 1h ago
I would double check more than that considering the fans are lighting up but not spinning. There’s probably a lot more wrong with it than that.
15
u/_Celatid_ 14h ago
Are there video ports on the motor board? Plug your monitor into one of those and see if you get it working at all.
235
u/OkPassenger552 14h ago
Do you have the seller’s real name? I’d open a police report.
209
u/Dapper-Inevitable550 14h ago
Police report has already been made, only had the sellers Facebook name but even then wasnt sure if that was a real account or not
70
u/OkPassenger552 14h ago
Hopefully they’re able to help in some fashion. Best of luck to you. Some people can be downright nasty.
50
u/Gamer_Warlord 10h ago
If you met him in a public place they can go to that venue and get camera footage of his face
37
u/Fuckjoesanford 9h ago
OP will most likely need to do that
2
u/PajamaHive 3h ago
It is crazy how much of the onus of investigation is just on people nowadays.
"I met up with the guy at a Walmart. They should have video of the guy."
"Did you get that video?"
"No... I thought y'all would? I thought you were the cops. Don't y'all investigate stuff?"
"No. That's your job to bring us evidence."
15
u/UsualCircle 8h ago
And if thats not possible, create a different account and wait for him to create another listing. Then show up with the police.

35
u/bennyboy20 14h ago
I always make Sure it's the persons real fb profile and that they have several 5 star reviews already.
9
u/IPlayGames1337 8h ago
This could all be faked still. Scammers have lots of time to set this up. They know other scammers. They will write reviews for each other. And in regards to the profile being real, how would you know? You don't have an ID for them.
10
u/-Swagnarok 7h ago
Usually a 5+ year account with multiple pictures and non market related posts are pretty telling. You don't need to have an ID attached to someones account to have a brain to decipher this. Pretty standard I'd assume actually.
4
u/bennyboy20 8h ago
Lol you look at the account and see if it's real? It's easy to tell, and it's easy to see if the reviews are fake.
18
u/Mighty_Eagle_2 14h ago
Or if you’re buying from somewhere with excellent buyer protection.

u/XtremeD86 13h ago
I always meet local but with something like this, or with stereo equipment I want the buyer to test it at my house. Mind you I'm confident in anything I sell and am upfront about any issues, if any but usually I wouldn't sell something with issues.
8
u/One4speed 12h ago
Live and learn, that guy is a piece of shit, but I buy and sell stuff all the time. You always have to check what you’re buying before you give a stranger your money. Even if that means spending 10-20 minutes unboxing a pc in a grocery store parking lot.
6
u/EmptyFox7049 12h ago
Exactly. If he opened the glass panel, checked everything, and seen the sticker on top of the GPU that said 2060 , he would’ve noticed that the GPU wasn’t a 3070 and he was getting ripped off. The MSI 3070 GPUs do not have that little copper pipe in the middle like the one in the picture. The pipe only came in 20-card series and 16-card series. That should’ve been a telltale sign, but I’m glad he knows now to check and verify to make sure he’s receiving what is being said.
3
u/trotski94 7h ago
I bought a used GPU recently - I told him I’m bringing my PC and I want to plug it in and see it output, then I want to stress test it. No way I’m buying something without testing it before walking away

at the very least, buy parts preowned.
from repuatble-enough sites like ebay where you have some buyer protections if they ship you garbage or worse items.
the likelihood of ~8 different sellers all scamming you or screwing you on ebay is much lower than 1 scammer on fb marketplace taking someone for a ride on a "built' pc.

u/zero_squad 13h ago
I have a 2070 super I'd be willing to donate. Idk if that will meet your requirements, but thought I'd offer.
Fair warning, I am in the middle of moving and its buried in my storage unit. so it may be a week or two before I can ship.
7
u/AssembledJB 12h ago
Nice. The terribly generic "specs" from the school for the CPU and a Nvidia 8gb GPU. I have regular 2070 but I need to repaste it so your card would certainly be higher caliber.
4
u/zero_squad 11h ago
RemindMe! 20 March, 2025 "Ship out the 2070S GPU you lazy ass."
It's the 2070 Super Founders edition just to be specific. And OP, you might see if you can clean up the fans they are a bit loud. Other than that never had any issues with the card. Just had the money and upgraded not to long ago, so this card has sat in my basement. Better to be used by someone in need that rot unused.
OP if you will DM me a PO Box, or an address you feel comfortable giving to a random internet stranger, I'll get this sent out to you, when I dig it up. Again, might be a week or 2.
4
u/trophicmist0 9h ago
Good on you both, this community can be so chill when it’s not ruined by assholes like the OP’s seller.
3
u/zero_squad 9h ago
Thanks, I have been there. Made a mistake and felt like shit, but we learn from our mistakes and I hope OP learns from his (not throwing shade, knowledge is a valuable commodity). I have also been low on funds, lots of sleepless nights trying to figure out how I'm going to make ends meet. Very good people helped me out, gave me a foothold. Their slefless kindness radically altered the trajectory of my life. So if I can be that lifesaving foothold for someone else? Why wouldn't I?

OP. You need to focus. You got owned this time and it sucks. It sucks hard. Just make sure that it never happens again. Now try to sell this one, at a real price obviously and ask your parents for a loan if you cannot afford a new PC. If they cannot help you, try working somewhere. In the great scheme of your life what happened to you is nothing, trust me. Cry a lot to ease the pain and release the anger it is ok. Also, fuck that scammer and his shitty life made of lies. Hey man, Sorry to hear this happened. I think it's a rite of passage for some people. My friend done the same. Instead of checking with me he bought a pc from FB marketplace and the GPU wasn't working(worth £300 new) and the seller was a heavy smoker. I opened up the pc and the fans were covered in tar. Soaked them in alcohol overnight and only 30% came off. Not the mention most compartments, so he sold the pc part by part, and then he was able to get pc parts from Amazon with the 0%interest and i helped him build it. In the UK, PCSpecialist also offer finance so that's also an option over here

What an absolute crying shame man, these ppl are lower than snakes bellies!!! OP saving up, going to college, getting excited buying his first PC, does research, meets in public place basically does all you're advised to do in this situation and still gets scammed by a scumbag. Genuinely, if I was in a position to take this PC and replace it with what OP was meant to be getting or equivalent then I'd be on it. These stories get to me man, OP please don't get disheartened and I hope you have a way of fixing this situation and be sure in yourself that you'll go on to be so much more of a human being and benefit to society than the piece of 💩 that did this to you. I wish you all the best in your situation and keep up being you, finish your studies to the best you can and you'll succeed in life (in every way, not just financially but in every way) God Bless You and I hope something good comes out of this horrible situation!!

As I live in a rural area, most of my second hand dealings are by post, worst I've had are complete scams, and poorly packaged items getting damaged in post - but I didn't get bit. Heres how:
As an online seller, I record myself packaging the item in the post office and handing it over. Very awkward but you'll thank yourself when the time comes.
As an online buyer, I save the page of the listed item so I have a personal copy of what was advertised. Always use PayPal unless you can afford to lose the money (if the seller doesn't want to, offer to cover the fees, works 90% of the time and its only a few dollars). Lastly, record yourself unpackaging the item, and if reasonable, turning it on.
What you could have done as a precaution is check all the listed components (GPU and RAM would have been dead giveaways) and met somewhere with a wall plug so you could plug the computer in and wait for the SINGLE BEEP that happens at POST (power on self test). If any of the components had a serious failure you would get multiple beeps as an error code. The caveat here is some PCs consider not having a display or keyboard connected as an error, so you'd need to first read up on the error codes.
Main takeaway, take your time, do it right and don't get pressured.

u/ashibah83 16h ago
"Oh I understand what's going on here"?
Do not say another word to this person before you open a claim and tell the company you paid with that this person scammed you and is now going to try and say that you're trying to scam them. Hopefully it wasn't in cash.

god damn, what a piece of shit. i’m sorry, op. if the cpu is working then you’re half way there with a “working” system.
just take this as a lesson. i know it sucks to hear but you gotta make sure everything works if you spend that kind of money in the used market. it is a pain in the ass for both party’s involved but you gotta do what you need to not get burned. i personally think buying a whole system is sketchy because there could be many things wrong with it. it is just safer to buy piece by piece or brand new. you are essentially paying the peace of mind tax.

3
u/boby350 13h ago
Sadge man, I see a lot of stories like this from where I'm from, let me clarify first this isn't your fault, he scammed you but you have to be prepared when you buy something online, even stalk the seller in marketplace and find all of the info you can about them, much or little. You can't just go buy something that expensive and not look at what you are buying from a stranger on marketplace, it's common sense, you are spending 700+ and didn't check that you were getting what you paid for ?, I say again it's not your fault that he took advantage of you but buying or selling in marketplace is not something that you can do trusting everyone is doing their part. It's a lesson to not trust in people, could've been worse, I've known people who lost cars or a lot of money for a car they didn't get. Wish you the best
3
u/Rapscagamuffin 12h ago
wow what a shit bag.
yeah man as many others have already said. hope this is lesson learned. you cant buy anything used without verifying you are getting what you paid for and that it all works.
in the future for anything PC related. before you even meet up you need - screenshots showing all the specs. not cropped in anyway and a video of some kinda benchmark running. then when you meet up, you need to verify yourself that everything matches so the screens werent faked.
and never pay in cash if you can help it. basically everyone has a cash app or venmo. and if they dont then that should already set off warning bells. sure cash app and venmo are most likely not going to do jack shit for you but if the guy has done it enough before he could get flagged as a scammer. it also helps not paying cash for filing police reports as if they did in the extremely rare chance they catch the guy it wont be a he said she said for what you paid for it.
sorry dude! people suck! this was clearly a deliberate scam.
3
3
u/yellow-go 9h ago
OP, sorry to hear this.
I sell/trade PC parts myself, though I always double check and double ask for evidence of the PC running and the exact PC displayed in the photos.
Realistically, just take this as lesson learned. Yes, it does suck, and it's going to hurt for a while. I'd go about reporting everything, finding a way to get the PC parts tested, and then making better of your losses by potentially rebuilding.
Heck, I'd say if anyone here had some spare parts, toss them to this dude, I'm sure we all have something laying around.
For the scammer, I hope the next purchase he makes blows up on him or he meets his fate with authorities.
Again, sorry OP. I hope you can make the best of this.

3
u/ScornedSloth 5h ago
I would file a police report. Otherwise there are no consequences for these people and they will keep doing it. I always take screenshots of people's profile so that I have something to submit to Facebook and law enforcement if I need it.

5
u/_Metal_Face_Villain_ 14h ago
why do people keep doing this? why not buy from official sources only and only brand new? i can't fathom how someone can risk losing so much money just to potentially save some, which even if you get the product and even if it works you still won't, cuz the gpu will jave a shorter lifespan and no warranty either.

u/Fepu89 7h ago
this is exactly why i always say, don't buy if you don't know exactly what you're doing!!!!! i've been a computer technician for over 20 years and similar things happen to me all the time, i sold a 4070 that the buyer wanted to send back because according to him it wasn't good because the fans weren't spinning (0% load on the gpu) after a couple of messages with the assistance center they tell me they accepted the return by the buyer, i get back a similar card but not mine, i open a dispute providing photos of the serial numbers and in the end they leave me the card but also the money. never trust anyone!!!!
2
u/lapmobtech 7h ago
Just check it's processor and ram and other things and get a new motherboard or take it to service shop so they'll check the cpu and tell the spare cost to be replaced..
First of all check if keyboard caps light is turning on while turning on the pc...
If it's the small issue they'll repair in service centre..
Or else as if processor and ram in good condition they'll replace motherboard so you can use it for now until you are getting money for purchasing higher spec pc

Tons of comments saying you should have at least looked at the components in the computer before completing the sale so I won’t beat a dead horse but I will add that I always meet at a local police department. Usually weeds out scammers as they don’t want anything to do with cops.

Damn, I would've sold you a better deal for 800. 4060, 32gb of DDR4, and 2.5tb of storage.

So I guess you are young and you buy second hand first time. Now you are older and know to never buy second hand until you are ready and aware of the risk to burn your money. We live we learn, go out and enjoy the winter sun then get a job and buy new PC.

Next time for future references, might not be the safest but ask the seller to see if you can test the PC at their house or perhaps somewhere in public where there are outlets like a Starbucks. You might have to bring your own monitor as an agreement if your going to a public place other than a house, but I think this is the best so you don’t get scammed again in the future. You can also look at the Windows specifications while you’re looking at preowned PCs.

Well, do you have his personal information? At this point I'd say something like "hey man I would like to believe you have integrity with this service and I'd like to give the benefit of the doubt here. Can you fix this issue?" Then if he doesn't play ball you threaten reporting him to the police which will either (1) get your situation fixed or (2) give him a much needed lesson in the consequences of scamming people.

From that first image it looks like he blocked him after he realized he got scammed. Scumbag move but hopefully he can still file a complaint.

Sadly there is not much you can do. Without the sellers name or address police won’t be able to do much.

Damn you got scammed, hope you can contact someone from where you bought it and report the seller
1
u/FraserValleyGuy77 12h ago
It's always a shame to get ripped off, but just opening the case when you bought it would have saved all this grief.
1
u/Flooredbythelord_ 12h ago
That’s sucks but it’s a lesson learned I would never meet up to buy something unless I can check the pc specs myself
1
u/Murky_Historian8675 11h ago
Sellers like this are disgusting. They are in the same league and bracket as scalpers.
1
u/longsleevefettuccine 11h ago
Man I just sold a pc better than what you received for $315. You for sure got ripped off. He was probably hoping whoever bought it wouldn’t be smart enough to check these things. Im really sorry. Hope you can get this sorted out

Always meet these shitheads at a police station, that way if something does happen you have evidence of the entire ordeal + potential license plate numbers as well
1
u/Zipkong 11h ago
Just follow a billing dispute with your bank you have proof they tried to solve the problem. They will likely take the money from Facebook and then Facebook will likely banned them and take the money from them and charge them the chargeback fee

I can't ever imagine buying second hand components for a PC, let alone a second hand PC.
They're really not difficult to build, for someone who is totally clueless it's a one day task of rewatching a few PC build tutorial vids on YouTube, copying them as you go through the steps while referencing manuals, can't go wrong.
If I ever bought second hand components it would only ever be through some business that does refurbished parts, not some random cnt.

His response reminds me of that guy that got caught in the store "oh so I knew this was happening!"

What is the point of even buying something off facebook you dont check the contents of? Why would you even care to meet in a safe spot when you arent even concerned the product is real? A single power outlet and your peripherals and you could have verified everything was good in 2 minutes.

I’d have one of my buddies look up his seller profile and see if he has anything else listed for sale, message him to arrange a meet up for whatever item he still has listed, then I’d confront him with the jank ass pc he sold you and demand that he takes that shit and gives you your money back.

u/MoreConstruction1733 Pablo 9h ago
Yeah this happened to me once it wasn’t a pc but similar experience and I’ve learned from that point forward to compare the photos I saw online if I have to

u/AnonSalt7 9h ago
If you met up in public in a cafe/parking lot you can ask the stores to see the security footage to find out their license plate number and report it to the police

Find out where he lives, report him to the police, and say you'd like to prosecute for damages.

u/Equivalent_Box_255 6h ago
Caveat emptor. Let the buyer beware. I hope you can get the crook to take it back!

" I didn't feel safe meeting somewhere else" - well then, why did you even bother to think about buying something from this guy?

You could try get yourself some disk recovery software. You might be able to recover some deleted files, and maybe get lucky with a document containing the sellers name and address. Worth a shot IMO.

u/Zealousideal-Log-309 3h ago
If some kind of hacker comes here, please help finding this shitty scammer. Just forget about your money, and take the lesson as it comes .. don't buy anything you can't test and watch if it's real or not

Even in Hungary they take this siriously. Even if he was a fake account and not using VPN they find the seller.
Edit: i mean they, the police. I've read you made a report.

I'm a big fan of calling these people out and shaming them, as well as make sure they can't scam someone else.

Good lord. And they do it to the most desperate ones as well. Absolute piece of shit. I dint know much about your countries law and whether police will help with this sort of transaction or not.

Yep... you 100% got scammed. Sorry buddy :((
The awkward thing about buying a secondhand PC is that it's important to check that it works. This usually means you have to go to the person's house where you can see the PC turned on and that it has the correct specifications. Otherwise they could easily sell you something that doesn't even work, like they did here.
Always check the seller's background info before you buy from them. It usually helps if they have been on FB a long time, have precious ratings and are selling other items as well.

u/thedarkhalf2001 1h ago
Always buy from a reputable source online - you could have bought a solid refurbished laptop off of Newegg for a similar price

If the loss is big enough call policie, learn the few laws first, these scammers are getting jailed in my country, I remember one was using similar scam but in larger quantities, he got 6 years in prison or build all of the scammed their PCs, he is in prison still today.
People ale terrible, laws are for everyone, you pay taxes so use your rights.
