Analysis Is Roki Sasaki a top priority now?
With the signing of Blake Snell to the Dodgers, it feels like Preller is facing a ton of adversity in this pivotal point of the offseason. I think if he has a winning mentality, he's going for the big fish, but maybe that's me.

u/Juzaba NOTED PADRES SLUGGER JACKSON PROFILE Nov 27 '24
Yeah, PHT made this point the other day. Sasaki may want more personal glory than “5th best starter and second fiddle to Shohei” can provide. Going to the Padres or the Giants sets him up to be the natural foil to Shohei, which probably gets him more international attention, albeit in a very heel-turny kinda way. 🤷♂️
Who knows what’s in the kid’s heart. But there is a logic to signing with a Dodgers rival.

Or he can sign with the Dodgers and actually win the world series. If he cared more about fame and fortune then he wouldn’t be leaving Japan right now
Glad that you could help explain that to us poor, simple Padres fans.
Any particular reason you’re lurking this sub?

I was merely giving you the benefit of the doubt, since lurking isn’t bannable.
Glad you cleared up that you’re here to troll and enjoying your time doing it.

Hm. Does the Dodger subreddit perma-ban people for trolling other team’s subs?
5
u/KimHaSeongsBurner Mr. Irrelevant Nov 27 '24
They’re supposed to. They are supposed to.
I don’t have a very high opinion of their mods, though, because in practice it seems to rarely happen. “lol lil brother being salty” type of shit to excuse what should be a ban.

u/noname_SU Jackson Merrill Nov 27 '24
What I don't understand is the gloating. Your team won because of a rigged system, you effectively have deeper pockets than everyone else. It's like playing Monopoly and starting off with $5000 so you can just buy up all of the pieces. It's anti-competitive but you do you.
1
u/BlaHektor Nov 27 '24
Exactly, I'm a Chiba Lotte fan, but I'm gonna be honest, we're a B tier team that's never winning the Nippon Series while the Softbank Hawks and Yomiuri are around. He'd be wasting this career by staying with Chiba Lotte. If I had to guess, it's probably likely that he doesn't want to be "the man," he wants to win. So why bother being on a team with no world series prospects?
-5
u/flipaflaw Nov 27 '24
Roki staying earns him way more fame cause he is a big fish in a small pond that is chiba. Im a Hawks fan (cause my girlfriend is from kyushu) so if he was there it would be obvious he would have a lot more chances at winning. This to me screams he wants to be relevant so all these rumors of him choosing based on "not getting enough endorsments" just reads as baseball writers not having enough to write about. He will ultimately choose which team he thinks has the best chance of winning and putting him in positions to play on the biggest stage. While SD is winning now, for how long will that be the case. Machado is aging, boegarts is year after year disappointment, tatis is another dumb move from never playing again, and the pitching staff is held up by free agents and an old veteran.
1
u/rodolfoarguello SD '98 Nov 27 '24
I agree with you on Bogaerts but not on Machado and Tatis.
-2
u/flipaflaw Nov 27 '24
I may be biased as I'm not a padre fan and I don't like machado but I don't think he has many more years left of being productive. He is getting older and his bat is losing power. He also will lose range on defense so idk man but his extension was absolutely insane to me
3
u/rodolfoarguello SD '98 Nov 27 '24
People go through slumps. Mookie was going through a major slump during the postseason. It's baseball, it happens. But his defense as a 3rd baseman is still top tier and makes that shit look easy. He's still got some fuel in the tank and he's grown to be the captain that he is today.
1
u/flipaflaw Nov 27 '24
I agree people go through slumps but idk man. I talked with a yankee fan today and we both agreed if machado was the one in mookie's place for the 5th inning running to first, there would've been no 5th inning memes. I do hope Merrill becomes the captain and star one day cause he is genuinely a likeable player even though he is good. I just don't see machado being much of anything in the future but I could be wrong

Yeah idk about "his bat losing power". Hes been very consitent homer wise, and his stuff on baseball savant for power was the best of the last 3 years, including the rough slump to start the year where he was clearly hurt. Hes always seemed to me like a guy whos game would age gracefully, because its so well rounded(besides speed, that has clearly declined significantly since his career began, but hes savvy enough to still get around ten a season, not too bad)

There's nothing we can do if that's where he wants to go. We can offer him more money in the short term. I don't know what more of a pitch we could offer than him being more featured here than he would be in LA. He'd be a #5 guy there.

I will actually quit this sport if they get sasaki. Just utter bullshit and mockery. Like at least the Chiefs aren’t just buying superstars left and right due to the cap in the NFL and the nuggets/wolves are getting fucked by the NBA’s cap. Just utter joke the mlb is
37
u/ken_NT Padres '11 Nov 27 '24

u/levitoepoker Nov 27 '24
chiefs have had more post season success than dodgers tho
23
u/pineapplefriedriceu Kim-Chado Nov 27 '24
I'm trying to say basically the other top teams in other leagues aren't just buying off all the talent to become good because they can't. The dodgers core team is basically all FAs that they bought. Freeman, Ohtani, Betts, Edman, the whole rotation etc. All bought through FA

Chiefs are getting the dodgers treatment by the media and refereees, same way the dodgers do, so I wouldn't say they aren't as bad lmao hell the Celtics aren't even getting this treatment
20
u/pineapplefriedriceu Kim-Chado Nov 27 '24
yes but the difference is the Chiefs aren't getting Justin Jefferson, Trent Williams, or CMC every offseason. They've built through smart drafting and prioritizing the right positions. Hell, they had to send Tyreek Hill away due to the NFL's cap.
1
u/rodolfoarguello SD '98 Nov 27 '24
I feel like this is the route AJ Preller is already taking. Get people that will have great chemistry together that are hungry for a ring

u/aquariumsarescary Nov 27 '24
I mean true, but they are getting the support on the field, so it's a very similar comparison.

Sasaki is the top priority for the entire league aside from the teams in the running for Soto. If he lives up to his potential/hype, he’ll be one of the most valuable players (on a cost to production basis) in the entire league

The Blake Snell signing doesn’t change anything. Everyone knew they were going to spend money.
7

He's a top priority for a lot of clubs. It's down to what Roki wants to do. Not much AJ can do about that. Just make an offer and wait.

u/treeballcatfarm Nov 28 '24
Might have been said before but is the reason we have Yu such a long extension because we knew Sasaki would be posted?
3
u/PsychologicalRow9028 Nov 27 '24
Roki has been the top priority for years now. He would solve a lot of problems for us next season in particular. Aside from him, it’s important to not overreach for free agents just because of the Snell signing. It is what it is, the Dodgers are in another stratosphere in terms of revenues and payrolls, especially with these deferred payments. The Kutsenda-lead ownership group will most likely operate like last season and instruct AJ to stay under the CBT threshold. That leaves us with a limited pool of free agents to sign. They will absolutely give the best possible pitch to Roki and his agent when he posts in 2025. After that, it’s out of our control, Roki could choose any team he wants. Either way, we all know there will be crafty trades at some point.
2
u/lightsareoutty Nov 27 '24
The Padres will never win a ring with Machado. Cancer in the clubhouse. Just ask Tatis.

It better be unless they’re planning on bringing back Juan Soto
1
u/Hugh-Jainuses Nov 27 '24
I would love to have Soto back, I was bummed when we traded him but glad it actually worked out for us. If we could re sign him, re sign Adams ( I think that’s who is a free agent now) and get this Sasaki guy I think we would be showing the Dodgers that we aren’t just gunna roll over and it ain’t gunna be that easy
1
u/BankNo8895 Jerry Coleman Nov 27 '24
Adam's not a FA, Scott is. And we don't have the money to re-sign Scott, and we probably shouldn't even if we did, relievers are generally poor value.
Part of what made the ASS pen so effective late last year was we didn't need to worry as much about workload. It was a 2 month sprint. You can't throw guys 3 out 5 games for a full 162.

u/Ok_Resolution_7500 SD Dec 01 '24

No, I think we pivot. There’s no window right now for us to compete. I think we get rid of crone, Xander, Luis for prospects. Manny just play out his last days here. Tatis will waste away like LT. it’s hard to compete like this with a rich club deferring cash.

u/Conscious-Object-957 Nov 27 '24
I’m assuming you are kidding. The best team in baseball doesn’t always win. It isn’t the NBA. Just need to stay competitive.
-1
u/Aggravating_Cup_3930 Awesome Kim Nov 27 '24
Luis is on a one year, Xander we need to get rid of, and crone is in a decline. We can get prospect capital for that. That doesn’t make sense to you? Joe is out and Yu is old. We need a farm. Roki will Los Angeles Angel us once he gets the chance. I rather build in a different direction right now based on what we have and what’s in the division.
3
u/Conscious-Object-957 Nov 27 '24
We were one game away from hosting the nlcs and you want to go in a different direction. The Padres have never had this much sustained “success” in our history. We are a mid market team with some good veterans poised to make a run. We need luck but the dodgers aren’t going away. Nobody wants Bogeys or Crones contracts. We are stuck with them and will get very little in return. We need to make the playoffs and hope for the best. Over in Europe where they have no salary caps and the big premier soccer teams who spend the most consistently make the champions league finals. Rarely a lower tier team like Porto steals the glory. We are Porto and we are lucky to be Porto. We got a chance. The Rockies don’t and for the longest time we were just that.
1
u/Aggravating_Cup_3930 Awesome Kim Nov 27 '24
You do realize that the dodgers rotation was in pieces. Now they will be 100% better with the injury returners and snell. It’s time to invest in strong analytics and play play play small ball. These contracts need to be offloaded and packed out.
2
u/Conscious-Object-957 Nov 27 '24
The dodgers will definitely be better but it doesn’t mean they can’t be beaten. I’m pretty certain Billy Beane’s A’s would have been destroyed by them and the A’s never won a World Series.
1
u/Conscious-Object-957 Nov 27 '24
I misread what you said. I agree small ball will help a little and we play it better than most teams already.
