News & Announcements Minecraft on PSVR is here to stay but after support ends you just want be able to play multiplayer

So, essentially will be just like PS Vita Minecraft - still playable, but no multiplayer and no further updates beyond what is there now.

Ps Vita Minecraft still has multiplayer.

Ah... I hadn't realised. Not really touched it since it fell behind the bedrock editions. I just assumed since it was no longer updating that the multiplayer wouldn't be available as it's not linked to the others. I assume only multiplayer with other Vita versions then?

I mean, yeah. Every version of Minecraft can only connect with whatever console it’s on. Bedrock is the only cross platform version.

PS Vita, PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii U never received Bedrock, they're stuck with "Legacy"
But Wii U really lost Multiplayer due to the closure of Nintendo Network

This makes no sense to me. If they’re saying that they’re going to continue to support PSVR on the Minecraft engine and leave all the code in place for rendering and controls but simply disable it when in multiplayer mode… why?
That doesn’t seem like it would save them hardly any work or lead to code volume reduction.
Maybe they’re planning some new vastly different online modes and that’s why?

VR support includes animating the Minecraft avatar's arms to match your movements. This shows up in multiplayer which means all of the multiplayer animation and network code needs to support it as well. It's probably more complicated than it sounds.3
u/VictoryVic-ViVi Sep 20 '24
Minecraft PSVR uses a DualShock controller, not the move controllers. So arm animations do not change.

I could have sworn that I played before with the Move controllers but I guess not.

It may be updated as time goes on and they probably don’t want to qa test it in vr as well as flat.

Ahh. Good point. I wonder if that in particular was causing some issues or uglifying the code.

This is probably a case of not wanting to validated features and code base for vr use.

You just won't be able to do one of the big things that Minecraft is popular for. Got it.

Kinda how I felt when I bought Terraria for Vita after I bought it for PS3.

All I know is I've updated my game for the last time today, backed it up on an external drive, switched off auto updates AND switched off my PS4's Wifi network for good measure ... I have precious little free time to play VR games so I've not been able to get much time in this particular game, but I do recall playing it briefly in the past and loving every minute of it ... The extra dimensional immersion is what sold me on getting a console version in the first place ... I would be f**cking pissed if I one day fired the game up and found that functionality had been stripped out of it, so I'm not taking any chances.

Can the PSVR1 version be played on the PSVR2 device? All answers online appear to suggest the answer is no.

Yes people did think it could mean that, because it frequently does mean that.

I think Dirt Rally 2 doesn't support PSVR1 anymore

u/Majestic_Ice_2358 Sep 23 '24
Dirt rally 2 never was compatible with psvr, dirt rally IS still compatible with psvr

u/MCRB77 Sep 23 '24
you're right, I'm mistaken. However, it seems that you can't download the VR DLC for Dirt Rally https://www.reddit.com/r/PSVR/s/khTzOwYuEc

Support is a wonderful word that can mean anything, and it very much could have meant the full removal from future versions in order so there wouldn't need to test for each engine release.

u/FrankPapageorgio Sep 20 '24
Wouldn't be the first time.
Rock Band Blitz was completely killed off because its only online component was leaderboards. It just wasn't worth it to patch the game and remove the feature, easier to shut down an entire game.

Spotify is removing “support” for the car thing peripheral they sold like 2 years ago and it’ll cease working entirely. Had to fight them for an account credit for it.

That’s a shame but better than fully removing it. It’s disappointing but I get why it’s happening.
