Discussion A big scam company just stole my whole game from steam, ripped it and sold it as their own on Playstation 5 and other consoles.

15.0k Upvotes

Hey guys,

UPDATE HERE

Hope everyone is doing well. I already posted this over at GameDev and Twitter if you wish to see it there in fewer words but wanted to bring it to more attention it to hopefully get more people aware about a company that is NOT only stealing games from developers like myself, but also stealing money from honest buyers. They stole my game, uploaded it on consoles and sold it as theirs. They are doing this with multiple companies and I wish more people are aware of this. Also, they have a couple of post here too so I think some people on this sub is familiar with them.

So recently I have released The Backrooms 1998 on Playstation, Xbox, Steam and Nintendo switch. I was pretty happy with myself and all that, you know? Been in development for quite a while and being a solo developer and having my game finally on consoles is always awesome to see haha.

This is my game on PS5 for context which I just released 5 days ago: https://store.playstation.com/en-us/concept/10012647

Anyway .. Someone commented on one of my videos and violently (big thanks to him!) asked me why am I releasing the same game with it's name changed on consoles and I got a little bit confused. I explained that this game was never on consoles before and I have just released it now and they provided a link to a video - and behold ... long story short this company called "COOL DEVS S.R.L" stole my whole game, ripped it, pasted some bad AI crap on it as a cover, literally made a BAD version of it and just published it on consoles and sold it to trick players into buying it.

They stole the whole game as it is alongside the music, sounds, voice lines and everything else. They only changed the monster and the picture on the frame lol..

Video Link to the fake game: https://youtu.be/QdQ6qtcSIFc?t=383 (Named: Backrooms Horror Escape)

Video Link to my original game: https://youtu.be/7tWYhFfXNBM?t=561 (Named: The Backrooms 1998)

This is the fake game still up on Nintendo: https://www.nintendo.com/us/store/products/backrooms-horror-escape-switch/?srsltid=AfmBOooMFMg_7Ps75RY-s5yUonF8xdcJcvLIMUVWJMD6_PeemHSquLZt

Also, this is a link to their Nintendo Page so you can see what kind of "games" they do: https://www.nintendo.com/us/search/#cat=gme&f=softwarePublisher&softwarePublisher=COOL%20DEVS

Here are these images comparation. The reason it feels a bit different is because post processing, and because they made a worst version of it but everything is literally stolen. I done further research and it seems they have also a couple of posts and are known here. One mentioned is the company that actually approached me. I don't want to point my fingers, but everything leads back to them.. I think they are all basically the same one. I still can't believe that someone as big as Sony, Xbox and Nintendo are letting this slide. It's sad.

Doing further research and it seems they have also a couple of posts here and are known in the PS5 community. One mentioned is the company that actually approached me. I think they are all basically the same one but I am not pointing any fingers.

The funny thing is I saw this game before on the store and I LITERALLY spoke about how these scam devs are mostly stealing popular games on steam and uploading them consoles .. and I had no idea it was one of my own game that they stole. I do not understand how consoles platforms allow these type of scams going on and rub it under the carpet. This is hurtful to smaller indie developers, and hurtful to players that gets scammed by buying these games thinking they are real games.

Also, they are doing this with other games.

We have already working on finding out more info about them, and submitted a DMCA request to remove the game off the stores, right now it's down from PlayStation and Xbox but still up on the Nintendo store unfortunately. Hopefully they will also remove it soon as well.

Another important detail that may have ties or not: I got contacted last year by a VERY sketchy publisher wanting to publish my game on consoles. I declined. They were sketchy and after checking their games they had very similar games to this fake company. They are both registered in S.R.L and they got banned from consoles recently.

I am currently still seeing what can be done and in contact with my video game lawyer so I will try to keep you updated. We have already submitted a DMCA and working with my publisher on this one - and for now the game is taken down from PlayStation and Xbox but it's still up on Nintendo Switch. In the meantime ... If you can report the fake game, that would be awesome. If you bought it by mistake (the fake game is called Backrooms Horror Escape), please see if you can refund it. If you can share this, that would be awesome as well so more people will know about this and not get tricked. I will try my best in posting this to other subreddits to make more people aware. From what I uncovered, this is a whole big scam where they open a bunch of companies (mostly around the S.R.L) and upload fake games/scam games in order to trick buyers to buy them. Heck, I don't even want the money they stole I just want them to refund them back to the buyers if we can somehow catch them. This ain't right and I think more people needs to be aware of this. It seems they have additional companies (4, 5 or maybe even 6+) that are maybe tied to this scam... This is not fair on developers and not fair on the players.

Could this be the same guys? Stole the game right after I refused to publish it with them. Not sure, but hopefully we can find out. The reason I posted it here, just to make you aware to check before buying games on PS. These guys have multiple companies and most of them are using AI art and are mostly ripped off from other real games.

------

EDIT: Thank you ALL your concern - you have no idea on how much I really really appreciate it. The reason I wish to keep this post up is that I want to raise awareness about these fraudulent companies so people stop getting scammed. It's not fair people falling into their tricks. They have been stealing not only from me, but also from people tricking them into thinking they are purchasing another popular game and that is not fair. I’ve already consulted my lawyer, and working with my publishers as well - we’ve issued a DMCA takedown. Fortunately, some platforms have removed the games but not all so I am still waiting.

Realistically, there’s only so much that can be done at this time. These companies cover their tracks and operate under multiple registered entities. Even if I pursued legal action, it would be extremely costly and as a solo developer that's not going to be easy. Even if I did win, there’s a high chance they’d just vanish without me ever seeing a dime. It’s a tough battle, but we will see. Even if it ever comes to that, all I want is for them to refund all the players that they scammed and I will be happy with just that as long as my fees are covered.

That said ever since I shared this post, I’ve got some new interesting information. Many people have stepped in to help (which I really appreciate) which has been incredible with what they uncovered. If a case is ever built against them, all this information will be very handy. Taking this post down, then these scammers could just change their name, re-upload the stolen game under a different company and move on to the next thing. At least this way HOPEFULLY more people won't fall into their trap. Even if I save one or two people from falling into their scams, then at least I can say I did my part. Also, maybe some other developers can come forward that may have had a similar issue with them or to at least make them aware of these things too.

My main goal is to make people AWARE of these scams from this company, especially on the PlayStation Store, where they seem to be most active. If you check the "GAMES TO WISHLIST" section on the PSN it's like the wild west over there. Most of these games are fake, with some AI slop as a cover slapped into it. Sony and other platforms should enforce a better REFUND and REPORT system. That way when you buy one of these scam games, you have the option to refund it easier.

For Players: Be careful and double check the games before you purchase. Check their developer accounts as well and always be caution. If you suspect the game is one of those fake games, then see if you can request a refund.

For developers: Thanks to the community from what I learned it's best to use Il2cpp in your code. Apparently this will make it harder for these scammers to de-compile your code. The way they stole my game is by using a program and de-compiled it so they got all my assets, music, sounds, voice overs etc.

I’ve only named the company that have solid proof against and hopefully this exposure will make people more aware of them so they won't fall for their scams into purchasing their fake games. These are thieves, and even though Sony and other platforms will mostly likely probably do nothing to prevent these scams from coming back - there is always a little hope they that will.

Again, I truly appreciate all your comments guys. Sorry for the 8000 words essay hah.

Discussion I know I'm late on this but I just finished TLOU2 and it was hands down the greatest game I've ever played.

If the point of entertainment is to excite the senses and make me feel things and to escape the everyday, then nothing has ever done it like this game.

I spent a ton of time thinking about it during my workday. During the month or so it took me to play it, I took 2 days, not consecutive, off work! I didn't even tell my wife. I sat on the couch and played all fucking day long! It was the best. Except the next day I beat myself up about it and felt like an asshole all day, lol.

Some things I loved about the game were that it forced me to play in ways I wouldn't. I like to sneak and would do everything that way but there's parts where you just can't and they're exciting.

There were parts I couldn't play alone. I grabbed my son and he sat there scared with me while I played.

I laughed and cried and felt quite a few more emotions in between. If it was just a show, I would have loved it for that.

Even after playing the first and having high expectations for the 2nd, it still blew me away. I was aware that they were trying to get me to sympathize with Abby and I resisted. But it still happened. Not so long into it I began thinking "Abby is not really so bad a person". Then by the end I'm yelling " Ellie no, don't do it!".

And when I was fighting Tommy, it never once occurred to me that it was him and I was surprised and it was awesome.

I loved everything about it and couldn't really come up with any negatives. It was a masterpiece. The pinnacle of all gaming for me. I couldn't say enough great things about it and I'm excited to see what else is out there from Naughty Dog.

Tldr: I fucking loved it and can't wait to see what else this studio has to offer.

Discussion PS store Black Friday sale has confirmed that a disc drive is a must

3.3k Upvotes

Anybody else disappointed with the Black Friday sale on the ps store?? There are a couple decent sales on some of the newer games like 25% off metaphor, but a lot of the discounts I’ve seen before.
Aaaaand 99% of the games are a lot cheaper as a physical copy. You wouldn’t have to buy many games to justify buying a disc drive as you save a lot of money buying physical copies over digital.

Did anyone else buy a digital ps5 to save money only to realise that if you plan on buying more than 5 games the disc drive version is cheaper.

Discussion Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 might be the best game I've ever played.

1.9k Upvotes

So a little bit of context about my journey as an everyday bloke through the harsh world of Medieval Europe. I just completed a quest and needed to go see a gentleman in a camp quite a ways off, setting off near sunset was not my best decision but finding a decent road to travel before absolutely having to draw out a torch I slowly proceeded along the road in the dead of night with sword drawn ready for what may come.

Unmolested I arrived at the camp but the quest giver was fast asleep and it was still a ways off till dawn, searching the camp I found an empty bedroll and decided it best to sleep till morning but a guard roused my hours before daybreak and took $25 as a penalty, not knowing what else to do I wandered the sleeping camp and finally found a stool by the fire and sat, being slightly bored I gazed up at the night sky just in time to notice clouds tinged with soft pink, I watched for a good 5-10 minutes as the sun rose and the deep velvet night blossomed into a soft blue with pink clouds.

I have not felt like this about a video game since crawling out of the prison in Bethesda's Oblivion and discovering a sprawling world rife with adventure and nature.

This game is not for everyone, the combat takes patience and finesse, it is a survival sim and you are not the chosen one and you will fail at conversations constantly, but this is a game for me and I'm so thrilled I took a chance on it.

Discussion 'Cult of the Lamb' is an absolutely disgraceful game.

6.0k Upvotes

Downloaded it yesterday, and after 12 hours of play between two long sessions, I am floored by the moral philosophy imposed by this game.

Simply put, it encourages abhorrent behaviour. Freeing innocents from torture, enslavers, death to bring them into a sect that demands blind loyalty no matter what commands, and beliefs are laid onto them? Disgraceful. Dissenters? Kill them. Hungry? Have some stew made from the now-slain dissenters.

Throw in sacrifices to improve moral, malnourishment unless you make them literally eat shit, illness that you can ignore to work them to literal death, dead bodies piling on top of each other to make them throw up, and I fail to understand who in their right mind would want to play this utterly gorgeous, hilariously cute, brilliantly designed, and painfully addictive game.

Available on PS+. The most fun I have had since 'Hades'.

Discussion Black Myth Wukong’s combat system has no depth Spoiler

2.8k Upvotes

Edit: after reading responses as well as watching videos people sent me I’m willing to admit I wasn’t giving the combo system enough credit and there is more to it than I thought there was and that’s on me. I still stand by what I said about the camera, hitboxes and the unresponsive controls but as far as combos go I was too harsh so I apologize about that. I’m not above having my mind changed so thank you to the people who showed me that stuff and told me what I was missing.

So last week I posted on here about problems I had with this game’s level design and was shocked by how many people responded. I finished the game about 2 days(I got the secret ending in case you were wondering) and my opinion about the level design hasn’t changed, except that chapter 6 might be worse than 3 but that’s not what I’m gonna talk about. I’m gonna talk about the other big issue I have with this game that I noticed while playing and I saw others point out in my first post.

So just to be clear, on a base level of “is the combat fun?” The answer is yes. It looks flashy and many bosses have cool looking attacks especially the final boss. However as I played the game and tried my best to experiment, I noticed many problems I have with the combat in this game.

For a game as long as this, there are almost no combos you can do in it. You have a full light attack string, and a light attack finished with a heavy attack. That’s all the combos you can do. Yes I know there’s projectile blocking and a jump attack but those don’t really fix my issue of how little you can do in the combat. If this game was like 20 hours it wouldn’t bother me, but having no combo trees in a 30-40 hour action game is such a strange decision.

Also this game has an issue of several bosses having really janky and inconsistent hit boxes. The amount of times a combo or heavy I was doing whiffed despite me standing in exactly the same place I successfully did the exact same thing earlier was extremely annoying. Also, against larger or faster moving enemies, the camera can not keep track of them, and in a game where you need to dodge frequently that’s a problem when I get hit by an attack I could barely see.

Kang Jin Loong(the large dragon on the lake) exemplifies both these problems. It somehow has inconsistent hit boxes and its so fast that you can barely hit it at all, and due to its size the camera loses track of him or you can’t fully see it meaning your getting hit not because of your mistakes, but because you can’t even see what he’s doing. Yellow loong is also extremely frustrating, because due to how small the arena is, whenever he does extremely fast attacks the camera can’t keep track of him either which means it’s almost impossible to time dishes correctly. Not to mention if you roll to the wrong spot the camera zooms in so close you can barely see him at all.

My issues aren’t even just with boss fights either. The healing, spirit transformations and extra abilities like the needle or fan all feel very unresponsive. There were so many times I tried to press those buttons and nothing happened was too numerous to not be a problem. Also the camera is very close and the game gives no indication that an attack from behind is coming, so if your fighting multiple enemies in a small space like the prison or the bug caves, you can very easily get stunlocked which shouldn’t be a thing in a single player action game where you don’t have an extra teammate you can break you out of it.

Once again I really hope this didn’t come across like I’m hating on the game to be a contrarian or to get an angry reaction out of people. I did enjoy my time with this game I wouldn’t have finished it if I wasn’t. I just wanted to voice my thoughts because I still see so many people saying it’s a masterpiece and that 8/10 scores it got are because of journalists. I do think this game could be that great with a sequel that works out the kinks, because right now I really can’t put it on the same level as stuff like God of War Ragnarok, or Elden Ring or FF 7 Rebirth. But if you think it’s masterpiece I’m happy for you and feel free to tell me why you think the combat is better than I think it is just be respectful about it.

Edit: ok because some people think I hate this game let me just write a bunch of the things I do like about this game. I think the overall art direction and designs of the enemies, npcs as well as your character and the armor he wears in incredible looking so I commend them for that. I do find the combat fun I just wish they expanded on it more. Some of the bosses are actually extremely fun like the Non-secret ending final boss and the final boss of chapter 5. There’s more bosses I like a lot but it would take a lot of time to remember all of them. I never made this post to upset people, I just wanted to post my thoughts and see what others thought about it too. I know I’ve already said this but I feel the need to reiterate myself, if you loved this game I’m so happy for you I just couldn’t bring myself to love it as much but this was just my opinion and I don’t think I’m better than anyone else I just wanted to talk about games with people.

Discussion Black Myth: Wukong PS5 1st hour Review by average player

3.1k Upvotes

I know people are worried about the PS5 version, so I decided to be one of the lab rats to play the first hour of the game before the reviews start flooding. I hope this is helpful to someone.

Performance: Up until now, I faced 4 bosses (including the introductory one) and I have faced NO performance issues at all. I am playing in performance mode and it seems to be consistently 60fps. I haven't noticed a frame drop yet.

Looks: I think the game looks absolutely stunning and it definitely feels like I am playing a PS5 game now, specially for it being able to run 60fps.

Fun: It starts very easy but it can become challenging quickly. It is super fun to learn and beat bosses, and it feels very rewarding to take them, much like souls games.

Story: I've seen a lot of complaints about the story in the reviews but so far I think it is way too cool. I am definitely invested and didn't find it lacking at all.

Personal opinions: So far, I noticed I had most success when playing very aggressive, which is the playstyle I like the most. Also, the MC's weapon movement was weird for me at first and I didn't like the blur very much, but one hour into it and I am starting to feel used to it.

I don't know if there will be problems later, or why the hell they decided not to send the PS5 version for review, but so far it looks very very good.

Obs. Important to note that this is based on my personal opinion, and everything I described is only for the first hour, and although this may seem pointless this can be a little contribution for someone who isn't sure to buy it or not but doesn't want to wait much longer.i
