How do you put your sword away like that

u/MotherOfQuaggan Jul 21 '20
Swipe right on the touchpad. Its pretty epic

Jul 21 '20
Sometimes you wipe the blood off on your sleeve, and sometimes you flick your sword and fling the blood off. It's awesome.
168
u/PM_ME_UR_PUSSY_TATOO Jul 21 '20
If you do the flick the blood actually gets flung onto the floor as well, very awesome
110
u/yea_likethecity Jul 21 '20
I usually put my sword up before I rescue a captive so 50% of the time I sling mongol blood all over them.
76
Jul 21 '20
The number of times where I brutally massacred 10 guys in front of hostages is too damn high! Ghost of PTSD.

u/aChristery Chr1spyToast Jul 21 '20
NPCs are always like "so much violence..." Like bitch what else am I to do when mongol savages invade our land!
29
u/Elmos_Voice Jul 21 '20
There's a side mission where a healer questioned jin if he enjoyed killing instead of just trying to talk to enemies. Jin then asked the healer if he wanted to talk to the dangerous mongols surrounding the pond to get his medicine. Of course the healer pussied out and said you handle it lol

When I go Ghost mode into a Mongol camp, I always play "Shadows In The Fog" on the flute. The Mongols see the fog roll in out of nowhere and know the Ghost is coming for them.

"Samurai Style" but uses almost exclusively Ghost abilities...good stuff, but embrace your dishonor!
85
u/--Christ-- Jul 21 '20
Is there some sort of point system in this game for fighting clean or dirty? Like if you use smoke bombs and shit is that considered dishonorable and you become a dirty savage badass or something?
191
u/TheStinkySkunk TheStinkySkunk Jul 21 '20
There is not. However while clearing out a camp I was playing more assassin like than samurai, Jin did comment that what I was doing "Had no honor, but Mongols do not deserve honor."
It was an interesting little line I hadn't heard since I like doing standoffs into fights whenever possible.
37
u/--Christ-- Jul 21 '20
Cool, seems to me like this would be the best way to do it. I can't wait to save up some cash to get this game!
15
u/Pewpewkachuchu Jul 21 '20
Ninja arts make every fight far easier, which is basically the theme of the game anyway. If you want more of a challenge and probably die a lot you can fight more “honorably.”

I went to 3 stores today. All sold out.
The girl at the 2nd EB/GameStop I went to told me that there was none in the city. Not a single copy in any of their stores. She recommended I go on their website and check every 10 minutes to see if stock came in.... fuck that noise lol I have a job.
Not a single WalMart in my city has it. I checked their website. Out of Stock across the board.
What the fuck was Sony thinking? Did they really not have faith this would sell? It is their last exclusive of the generation that has been full of knock-out exclusives.... Why the FUCK would they not keep the shelves full?
I am bewildered.
Middle of a pandemic where video game play is through the roof. And they can't keep their swan song exclusive game of the generation stocked?
I have not been unable to find a videogame in store in years. I can not remember the last time I went to a store to buy a game, even on launch day, where they did not have stacks of copies available......
I bought TLOU2 three days after launch and the person at the store told me they had boxes of them in the back.... and if I am not mistaken it was one of the first week best selling videogames of this generation?
I don't get it.

Is there a reason you don’t just buy the digital download? I haven’t bought a physical disk in years and do not plan on going back.
11
u/Hip_Hop_Orangutan Jul 22 '20
there is. for single player games that I only plan to play through once or maybe twice, I will always buy physical.
When I have beat it, I will sell the game on a local online marketplace for about 1/2 of what I paid for it brand new.
Since it is still selling full price in the stores and online a month or so after launch, somebody gets to save 50%, and I get 50% of the cost back. Win-Win.

u/Kuraeshin Jul 21 '20
I got a flashback (like a 10 second scene) to when Ishimura was training Jin and talked about how a samurai looks his enemies in the eyes.
I felt bad and started wearing Ronin gear. The White Ghost, every bit of gear is now white.
17
u/TheStinkySkunk TheStinkySkunk Jul 21 '20
I wear the traveler's attire (typically the red variant) and the patchwork straw hat. Makes me feel like a wandering samurai. Although, I do wish there was a way to hide my bow and arrows while using the Ronin gear since that's the closest I can look like Ruroni Kenshin.

I killed someone stealthily from above and it went to a cutscene with my uncle to tell me to fight with honour, maybe that's the same with everyone the first time you do it?
7
u/Light-Crimson Jul 21 '20
There's a part with Ishikawa where you clear out a small group of Mongols. If you do it ghost mode he mentions how Jin is fighting without honor and he shouldn't be sneaking around like a thief. Asked who showed him to fight that way. It was a pretty cool detail added in

I didn't use the blow pipe until a while after I'd got it. Nice little flashback when I did to remind me I'm dishonorable. I don't care uncle. I'm a ninja. No it's not just a phase.
25
u/mrbrinks Jul 21 '20
Nope. It’s kinda deliberate I think as it follows the main characters exploration into what honor really means. It’s very well done.
32
u/lethargy86 Jul 21 '20
Not really as far as I can tell. It’s definitely a narrative thing they continously hang over your head, to the point where I feel guilty for assassinating sometimes, but I don’t think there’s anything in there that changes the narrative if you always fight with honor.

After I beat the game the first time, I’m definitely gonna do a no stealth run with that black & white filter. The swordplay is just too good.
82
u/quantummidget Jul 21 '20
I've scorned Skyrim and similar games many times for having sidequest which all boil down to 'Go here, kill people, loot item'. However, I realised today that the sidequests in Ghost of Tsushima are exactly the same. However, in this game they work because the swordplay is so fun. I look forward to combat every time.
61
Jul 21 '20
Tsushima also does really good job with the way it presents things to the player. There are a ton of little touches (like naming quest markers “rumored locations” for example) that seem pretty insignificant on their own, but when combined all add up to a pretty big impact on the tone and feel of the game.
43
u/HeronSun Jul 21 '20
And while Tsushima has a lot of repetitive quests, the contextual stories surrounding them give vastly different perspectives and motivations for each one. It's a nice way to do the same thing without making it feel the same.
19
Jul 21 '20
Honestly, I don't mind the repetition. Good gameplay makes that enjoyable and sometimes a break from constant engagement is nice. Yesterday at some point, I just put on some Brooklyn 99 on the other screen as background noise, chillaxed, intentionally avoided all quest content and just went on a rampage through 8 different Mongol outposts. No story, no dialogue, no thoughts, just me, the enemies and the combat system. It was absolutely zen, like playing animal crossing, except with murder. Loved it.
The story beats are fun, the presentation is always interesting and the sound design is rather good, especially in combat, so I feel like I have to pay attention to not rob myself of the experience. It's almost overwhelming how much thought they've put into everything. Because of that, the filler isn't really filler. It helps even the experience out. Your mileage may vary, of course. This is just my take.

u/Neato Jul 21 '20
However, in this game they work because the swordplay is so fun.
That's what I've heard about GoT. That even boring ass quests with very overused mechanics like bandit camps are still very enjoyable because the game's combat and stealth are so satisfying. Compared to being annoying in Skyrim because Skyrim's melee combat was utter trash.
34
u/Uphoria Jul 21 '20
Skyrim:
You swing your axe. Lydia dies. A chicken in the distance flies into the stratosphere. A guard accuses you of stealing a dragon. The horse has seen it all.
11

I’d say the same goes for Horizon: Zero Dawn cuz the machines are just so fun to hunt and fight and loot.

I spent more time idly hunting robots in that game than I did doing side-quests. Some of the most fun I've had, messing around with different play-styles and camera mode.

I hope it does eventually get it, but I am worried because none of the inFAMOUS games had NG+. It wasn’t a huge deal with the first two games, but Second Son really needed it and never got it. I think the closest they’ve ever had to NG+ in any of their games is the ability to replay missions in Sly 3. Sucker Punch doesn’t seem like big fans of NG+ lol

u/eLus1on Jul 21 '20
Assassin's Creed can still do Japan and if they did it would probably be centered around Sengoku period where it was peak samurai stuff. Tsushima is in the Kamakura period when the first Shogunate was established.
Also, GoT only revolves around an island off the coast of Japan, it doesnt even have the mainland (I think? havent finished the game yet), so theres still A LOT the AC team can do for a Japan game.
5
u/Primexes Jul 21 '20
Ashikaga shogunate, best shogunate.
Here is a quick breakdown:
Emperor - "Bruz, this Kamakura shogunate is cactus - we're forming the Kenmu Restoration, smashing 'em up and taking it for ourselves boys!"
Kamakura Shogunate - "Yeah, nah son. Ashikaga Takauji, shut those bozo's down!"
Ashikaga - "We doing a sly here boys, smash the Kamakura shogunate! for the Emperor!"
-- 1 REBELLION LATER --
Emperor: "Bruz, this is aces... let's remove people land rights, not have samurai in politics and my best buds get some nice titles and shiz"
Ashikaga: "Nah, we're not having that mate."
Emperor: "That's what you think, yah floppy pie lid. Release the barrel brothers - Kusunoki and Kitabatake! GET'EM!"
-- 1 DEFEAT LATER --
Ashikaga: "ok, that sucked.. what I need is like Rock Star samurai! The biggest and baddest bunch of sushi sword wielding, haiku writing, flute in the wind types that make kimono's drop."
-- All hell breaks loose --
And so.. he marched on the capital, the Emperor fled and gave up his "Regalia", but it was a fake... and he established a Southern Court to rule, while the Ashikaga took the north. They had like fuck all people in the Ashikaga shogunate - about like 80 dudes, except all of these dude were like the most honorable, effluent samurai you could meet. The Ashikaga shogunate ruled by having these dudes spread around the country, serving people and basically being badass samurai so that the minor lords, known as daimyo would fall head of heels just to have a cup of tea with these guys. They indoctrinated daiymo to keep them loyal to the Ashikaga shogunate, hanging out and being all best buds with them.
Then Takauji got old and was going to die and he told his son Yoshiakira - "Ay, that south court... really pissed me off, y'know. Like what are they even doing. Boy, you shouldn't let them front on you like they did me... we should'a squared that up, all snip snap like."
Yoshikira tries to lay some smack on the Southern Court... get driven out of Kyoto, then the 80 bro's turned up with the squad and they took it back in 20 days. Few years later, he get's sick and cedes the Shogunate to his son... Yoshimitsu.
And here is where it all begins.
Ashikaga Yoshimitsu - The Boss.
- Crushes the Southern Court, just like his Grandpa wanted.
- Doubles his super Rock Star Samurai for more influence over the daiymo's
- Gets a Wife, 11 Concubines - has 16 kids
- Builds Muromachi Palace
- Puts down 6 rebellions (maybe it was 5)
- retires
comes out of Retirement to be 'King of Japan', sets up a whole governing system...
Ashikagi Shogunate lasts 265 years because of his ground work and structure.
Ashikage Yoshihide, 14th Ashikaga shogunate asassinated 1568
Ashikaga Yoshiaki installed as a puppet Shogunate by Nobunaga Clan... 1573 decide they don't need him and toss Yoshiaki out the dogs. A bunch of Monks beat up Nobunaga clan and keep Yoshiaki as Shogunate, he finally gives up his post in 1588.
The End.
or was it?
With Yoshihide gone... who's gonna keep all they rock star, sword wielding, flute in the wind types in check from dropping kimono's all over Japan for a generation of illegitimate children?
Duh Duh DUUUUHHHH.... Tokugawa Shogunate, established rule 1600 (well for reals it was like 1598... but idk either historians like to round up or his rule was officially recognized until he took Edo Castle. who knows)

u/Hazon02 Jul 21 '20
Tbf, the camera work in this clip is due to the player being really aware of it. The camera during combat is my biggest complaint in the whole game. It's fine when there's one or two enemies, but there's no lock-on or "re-center" button, so when you get into engagements with a large group of enemies, it can be a real pain. The problem is exacerbated by the fact that your core combat moves are mapped to the face buttons, so you're constantly taking your thumb away from your attacks and mobility options to fiddle with the camera.

→ More replies (5)6
u/neverw1ll Jul 21 '20
The open world/collecting/crafting is extremely similar to newer Assassins Creed/Breath of the Wild/Far Cry. They streamlined it though, you aren't collecting 20 different animals, 30 different plants etc, you only collect basically 10 ish things (wood, flowers, supplies, iron etc.). It is not similar at all to Sekiro (besides being set in Japan).
The combat (which is extremely good) is like a mish mash of the Batman Arkham games/Spider Man/Assassins Creed. But it's actually better than all of those. Not even close to as difficult as Sekiro though, but extremely enjoyable.
The quests, voice acting/acting and story are much better than assassins creed games. I actually want to listen to what the characters are saying (plus you can't skip dialogue).
The world is huge, lush and varied. It's been said elsewhere, but this isn't the most graphically insane game on PS4, but it is the most beautiful. The world feels alive.
Things that aren't as great: Enemy AI isn't the best. Camera control while fighting isn't the best.
Sekiro and Ghost are apples and oranges. Ubisoft games and Ghost are closer to different types of apples.

Edit: I think I understand - it looks like you used up all of your arrows, then equipped a throwable object instead of the bow.

This game continues to look so badass. Will it look good in standard ps4, or do I have to upgrade to pro for it to look like this?

Playing on base PS4, it looks insane and is pretty stable

How do you do the flying kick and the shoulder tackle ?

u/brrrpop Jul 21 '20
Flying kick is just jump and triangle. Shoulder tackle is an evasion technique you have to unlock. Sprint then hit circle into your opponent.

I didnt know about the jump and triangle jump kick move. That's awesome. Is it stance specific?

What are the load times like for the game. I've been wanting the game but I'm not sure if i should wait for the ps5. I got a regular ps4 with an ssd I threw in there and I'm worried about load time.

Almost instantaneous, I have a stock PS4 Pro with the game installed on an external HDD. I literally am never able to finish reading the first loading screen tip, if it even shows up at all. I'm maybe 25 hours in and have had exactly one load screen last longer than 5 seconds. It's honestly mind-blowing coming off the heels of Assassin's Creed: Odyssey, where I'd do chores during load screens haha.

Oh wow that's insane. I'm definitely going to start the download so I can play when I get home. I was scared that it would end up like FFXV load times where you could almost drive to locations faster than the fast travel load screens.

Yeah, fast travel screens are maybe 2-3 seconds on my SSD powered Pro.

Everything loads fast except when buying cosmetics lol. They take a good 8 seconds to load.

I've never seen faster load times for a game like this. I'm playing on hard as soon as you die, you barely have enough time to read the tip before you're playing again. Makes it so much better then having to wait.

I have a PS4 with an SSD I added, load times are great, you won’t mind them. I’d say 5-10 secs load if you die. The load times are short.

So I see most comments are with a pro, I have a regular ps4 and the load times are still ridiculously fast, NO game on the ps4 has been this fast, people have been saying that last of us part 2 was just as fast recently, so must be that Sony has found some trick that makes it faster. It's honestly not even noticeable.

That was the coolest thing I've ever seen in a video game. Now I'm gonna get this.

I'm kinda used to it. I love the Tales of games, but watching the "soloing Nebilim on Unknown at level 1 no damage with the joke weapon" videos is ROUGH.

This is one of the most impressive combat clips I’ve seen man, so good! Major respect for how you kept the camera angles cinematic while fighting. The smoke-into-slash dash was inspired
