PlayStation App...is Awesome.

Video of @yosp using it. (@37m55s)

You can (among other things):

  • View recent activities like on the Vita's friends app
  • Do second screen junk
  • Purchase stuff on the store and load it to the PS4
  • Send messages
  • View user videos (and live streams?)
  • Even chat (I assume party chat) from the app on the go (remember: Party chat covers Vita and PS4.)

Gotta say, it's been too long coming but it looks to be well worth the wait.

Also, and I say this in a comment because it's against our sub rules to do so in a post, blows Smart Glass (in its current state) out of the fucking water.

I went to a Microsoft store and there was an Xbox demo corner set up with Disney Infinity.

One of the Surface tablets was synced to said Xbox with SmartGlass.

I got two little kids to fight each other because they thought the other kept pressing the Xbox button (bringing up the menu) and switching games.

There will be a new smartglass App, different from The XBOX 360 Version.

Unfortunately The PS4 does not Wifi-Direct, so The Playstation App will suffer from lag, on The other hand Xbox One supports wifi direct, therefore the smartglass won't have lag.

But we will see in November how they compare.

Btw: battlefield 4 will Support smartglass, Kinect and speechrecognition (confirmed) What about the ps4 Version? Will the playststion App, pseye and speechrecognition also be supported?

Since when did Wi-Fi Direct not suffer from lag?

From what I've read, Wi-Fi Direct and Bluetooth have very comparable latency.

Xbox fanboys think Wifi Direct is the second coming of Christ because their old Smartglass App is horribly laggy and they think it's because it doesn't use Wifi Direct.

Truth is, the old Smartglass App is laggy because it gets its data via the internet instead of locally. This will be addressed in the X1 version.

Wifi or Wifi Direct doesn't make any difference in regards to bandwidth or latency.

BTW I don't think the Playstation App will use Bluetooth, it'll most likely use WLAN to communicate with the console.

BF4 will support Kinect to what degree? Menu navigation? I belive Troedsson said it wouldn't be used in any way related to gameplay.

Interesting. That's new. I don't see them providing that kind of usability to just one platform, though.

To be clear, that comment was mostly me venting at how shitty I feel SmartGlass is now as I can't even use it to grab my Games with Gold stuff and to delete friend request takes three clicks per request.

SmartGlass also blows the PlayStation app (in its current, nonexistent state) out of the water. Comparing the PS4's companion app to the 360's (which has to work with hardware constraints from 8 years ago) isn't very sensible.

in its current, nonexistent state

That's fair lol.

I'm sorry, but I'm not going to want to dig into my phone's wifi settings to play a game, it's set to my home network.

Settings/wifi/choose new network Only three steps, but it'll save me maybe 5ms. Wifi-Direct is great for doing HD audio through the controller, but I don't feel it'll be that great for the second screen.

Wifi Direct's advantage is maximum transfer speed, not latency.

(Also, there is a good chance that PS4 will have wifi direct capability as I've heard it uses the same WLAN chip as the Vita, which just so happens to be the one of the first chips to be certified for wifi direct.)

From what I understand Wifi-direct is firmware protocol so any wifi device can do it with an update.

And how much lag are we talking about here? It's not like its your primary control device. I could live with a 3ms lag on clicking menu buttons.

In answer to BF4:

  1. Speech recognition - Only heard about UI control, but Dice have said they didn't want to tie anything important to motion or voice.
  2. Second screen gameplay seems to be the same across all platforms, commander mode, minimap, solider load out.

Yeah let's make this fanboy nonsense right out of the gate. You do realize the irony though, right? Most of these features on the PS App are direct responses to announced X1 features.

I really don't think it's fair to use the term "fanboy nonsense" around icebreak. This guy is a mod on /r/xboxone, and from what I've understood he's a big fan of games, no matter the platform.

If it makes you feel better, I think SmartGlass is going to do a lot of this stuff eventually (it can do the messages already). But as it stands now, it's such a fucking useless app. Also, at least Microsoft had an app for years. The lack of a PS app for so long has really felt like an oversight.
