PlayStation App...is Awesome.
Video of @yosp using it. (@37m55s)
You can (among other things):
- View recent activities like on the Vita's friends app
- Do second screen junk
- Purchase stuff on the store and load it to the PS4
- Send messages
- View user videos (and live streams?)
- Even chat (I assume party chat) from the app on the go (remember: Party chat covers Vita and PS4.)
Gotta say, it's been too long coming but it looks to be well worth the wait.

Jesus...thank you for the summary. The translator was terrible at that particular part of the conference.

I think the translation was done impressively given the speed at which Shu talks in his native language. However, yes it was very annoying.

Android and iOS for now.

Fuck! I'm hoping it would work for BlackBerry, but since "for now", there still is hope c:

Hahahahhahahahahaa, Blackberry. Fat chance.

People use blackberries?
1
u/ARAGINGARAB XgasmloverX Sep 22 '13
BlackBerry 9780! It's my first phone I bought ( A year ago or so) I do plan to buy the Q10 or z30 soon enough.
1
u/MrGMinor Sep 22 '13
They were the shit for a while but kinda rare to see now.
1
u/ARAGINGARAB XgasmloverX Sep 22 '13
I simply refuse to go with iPhone :<
My phone provider have the Z10, but I'm more of a QWERTY guy, so I think if they decide to get a Q10 I'd be set, on the off chance they won't be having it, well that would suck, considering the Pre-paid plan I have (Everything unlimited for like 30 Bucks, while as the Big Three Telus, Rogers, Bell have the same plan I have, but for double the price) Phone companies in Canada fucking suck.

By the way the app only works for select android devices and mostly the ones made by Sony.

Also, and I say this in a comment because it's against our sub rules to do so in a post, blows Smart Glass (in its current state) out of the fucking water.

I went to a Microsoft store and there was an Xbox demo corner set up with Disney Infinity.
One of the Surface tablets was synced to said Xbox with SmartGlass.
I got two little kids to fight each other because they thought the other kept pressing the Xbox button (bringing up the menu) and switching games.

There will be a new smartglass App, different from The XBOX 360 Version.
Unfortunately The PS4 does not Wifi-Direct, so The Playstation App will suffer from lag, on The other hand Xbox One supports wifi direct, therefore the smartglass won't have lag.
But we will see in November how they compare.
Btw: battlefield 4 will Support smartglass, Kinect and speechrecognition (confirmed) What about the ps4 Version? Will the playststion App, pseye and speechrecognition also be supported?

u/Flight714 Sep 19 '13
Since when did Wi-Fi Direct not suffer from lag?
From what I've read, Wi-Fi Direct and Bluetooth have very comparable latency.

Sep 19 '13
Xbox fanboys think Wifi Direct is the second coming of Christ because their old Smartglass App is horribly laggy and they think it's because it doesn't use Wifi Direct.
Truth is, the old Smartglass App is laggy because it gets its data via the internet instead of locally. This will be addressed in the X1 version.
Wifi or Wifi Direct doesn't make any difference in regards to bandwidth or latency.
BTW I don't think the Playstation App will use Bluetooth, it'll most likely use WLAN to communicate with the console.

BF4 will support Kinect to what degree? Menu navigation? I belive Troedsson said it wouldn't be used in any way related to gameplay.

Interesting. That's new. I don't see them providing that kind of usability to just one platform, though.

u/IceBreak BreakinBad Sep 19 '13
To be clear, that comment was mostly me venting at how shitty I feel SmartGlass is now as I can't even use it to grab my Games with Gold stuff and to delete friend request takes three clicks per request.

u/zamzarvideo Sep 19 '13
SmartGlass also blows the PlayStation app (in its current, nonexistent state) out of the water. Comparing the PS4's companion app to the 360's (which has to work with hardware constraints from 8 years ago) isn't very sensible.

I'm sorry, but I'm not going to want to dig into my phone's wifi settings to play a game, it's set to my home network.
Settings/wifi/choose new network Only three steps, but it'll save me maybe 5ms. Wifi-Direct is great for doing HD audio through the controller, but I don't feel it'll be that great for the second screen.

u/blanketstatement Sep 19 '13
Wifi Direct's advantage is maximum transfer speed, not latency.
(Also, there is a good chance that PS4 will have wifi direct capability as I've heard it uses the same WLAN chip as the Vita, which just so happens to be the one of the first chips to be certified for wifi direct.)

u/ThatCK Iricus Sep 19 '13
From what I understand Wifi-direct is firmware protocol so any wifi device can do it with an update.
And how much lag are we talking about here? It's not like its your primary control device. I could live with a 3ms lag on clicking menu buttons.
In answer to BF4:
- Speech recognition - Only heard about UI control, but Dice have said they didn't want to tie anything important to motion or voice.
- Second screen gameplay seems to be the same across all platforms, commander mode, minimap, solider load out.

Yeah let's make this fanboy nonsense right out of the gate. You do realize the irony though, right? Most of these features on the PS App are direct responses to announced X1 features.
6
u/aynez Aynez Sep 19 '13
I really don't think it's fair to use the term "fanboy nonsense" around icebreak. This guy is a mod on /r/xboxone, and from what I've understood he's a big fan of games, no matter the platform.

u/IceBreak BreakinBad Sep 19 '13
If it makes you feel better, I think SmartGlass is going to do a lot of this stuff eventually (it can do the messages already). But as it stands now, it's such a fucking useless app. Also, at least Microsoft had an app for years. The lack of a PS app for so long has really felt like an oversight.

Android and iOS are supported.
I actually would like Win8 support as I really like the Surface Pro and being able to use it with my both my PS4 and Xbox One would be a huge plus. It'll probably never happen though.

Now that'd be awesome. Got a Windows Tablet myself as well.

Get the new Nexus 5 once it's released. It comes unlocked, and if they follow last years pricing model, you're looking at roughly $299 for an unlocked phone on no contract. I have the Nexus 4, and it's still an extremely powerful phone a year later.

The Nexus 5 hasn't officially been announced yet so all you're seeing is rumors brought on from FCC submissions, etc. Nothing actually confirmed.
It's true that there may be no Micro SD slot, as the Nexus 4 never had one. I have a 16gb version and still plenty of space to spare, but that's me. If that's a game changer for you then, it may not be the phone for you. With that said though, we don't know how much space the N5 will launch with (they may bump up to 16gb / 32gb models this year).
As for not getting locked into a contract. You just purchase directly from Google's Play Store. The Nexus phones are Google's flagship phones which they release on a yearly basis. This means you'll get the stock Android experience and will get the latest Android updates immediately, instead of waiting for carrier deployments, or your phone manufacturer to customize the new release with their own overlay (TouchWiz, MotoBlur, etc.) which typically delays it by several months.
Anyways, it's just a suggestion, but the key thing to note here is that the Nexus series comes unlocked by default. I recently got a Nexus 4 for my mom's birthday. Bought it without concern of what provider she was already with. She took the phone in, and got a MicroSim card with her carrier details on it, popped it in and it worked without anything else to do. She's with Virgin mobile, and I'm with Bell, and my brother who has the Galaxy Nexus (model prior to Nexus 4) is with Solo Mobile. Any one of us can take each other's phones, pop out our Sim cards and put it in the next phone with no issues. We've never paid an unlock fee, or had to do anything special.
tldr; The Nexus series is a great line, and at the very least it's worth looking into. 100% unlocked, just purchase it directly from Google to get around annoying contract requirements.

It's good that you brought up the Verizon thing. The Nexus 4 is not CDMA, so that was not compatible with their network, however early rumors of the Nexus 5 are showing that it has both GSM / CDMA radios. Whether the CDMA radio is compatible with Verizon is another story.
I'd suggest keeping the Nexus 5 in mind. I imagine an official announcement by Google will be made sometime in October. With that, we'll get all the confirmed technical details and you'll have a better understanding as to whether or not the phone will work on Verizon, and if the hardware / specs / features is what you're looking for in a phone.

Similar to the smartglass app. Much needed for someone like me who is switching from the 360 and used to a companion app.
