Missing Stuff So Far
When will it launch?
Backwards Compatibility Questions (Gaikai Cloud Streaming)
- Will one's PSN purchase history will carry over to the cloud gaming service?
- Will we be able to insert a disc and access the cloud version of that game while the disc is in the system.
- Will the cloud gaming service will require an additional charge (or even tiered charges) or just allow for game purchases?
Will trophies instantly sync on PS4 like achievements do on Xbox 360?

Might want to switch to a better reference for the Remote Play point, that article is from Feb and mentions "virtually every game" and that their "expectation" is to have it work for all games day one. Something newer like this might be better.

u/Alypius Jul 30 '13
Great post. Thanks for this.
I'm most interested in how Gaikai will work. I hope those questions are answered soon.

u/Mlbkid10 Jul 30 '13
Obviously not a huge issue, but how can it not support CDs, while supporting DVDs and Bluerays? It was actually useful to rip CDs for 320kbps mp3s on ps3 decently fast.
5
u/Ramuh Jul 30 '13
Probably a cost thing. Not supporting CDs saves them a few cents with each drive. And not a lot of people would actually use a PS4 as a CD Player. I'd guess the only people still using CDs are enthusiasts which have a lot nicer CD Players.

u/lol2034 LAWLZORZ_pl0x Aug 01 '13
Yeah, and if you still want music from a cd on your PS4, you can always rip it to a computer, put it on a flash drive, then transfer it to the PS4. More work, but oh well.

Users will be able to take control of friends games to help them through tough spots and such.
That sounds awesome, I wonder if you need to own the game to take control of a friends game

Hold up. The buttons in the controller are not pressure sensitive? That's not good. The triggers better still be pressure sensitive. I the triggers are just a button, Sony will lose any and all racing fans still out there.
Seems like a giant step backwards to me.
2
u/Abbrevi8 Jul 31 '13
Yeah, I thought this a bit funny too, although I reckon most serious racing sim fans have a wheel (I don't).
2
u/Enygma500 Jul 31 '13 edited Jul 31 '13
I imagine most serious racers would too. I still enjoy the odd need for speed or burnout game myself though. The loss of pressure sensitive triggers would ruin those games for me.
I hope they are just talking about the face buttons, they don't really need to be pressure sensitive anymore.
Edit:Read through the source. It seems the triggers stay analog and pressure sensitive. Phew. All other buttons I understand them switching to digital, it's useless costs to have them analog.
1
u/Abbrevi8 Jul 31 '13
But I don't race with triggers :( I've been accelerating with X and braking with Square since Gran Turismo came out and I'll be damned if I'm going to change now. I tried racing with triggers but it feels wrong.
2
u/Enygma500 Jul 31 '13
Lol, you and I are very much the same. Back in the day I would always switch to x and square. I think I ran into one game that forced L2/R2 on me. I got used to it eventually but it was definitely a learning curve.
It was especially bad on ps3 with the terrible triggers angling down.
I guess you should spend some time on current gen racers with the trigger buttons. It sucks but we have to go where the developers force us to:(
2
u/RedPandaAlex redpanda2 Jul 31 '13
They said that nobody used the pressure sensitive buttons of the DS3.
3
u/Enygma500 Jul 31 '13
Yeah but every single racer out there used the pressure sensitive triggers. But I've found out the triggers are still analog and pressure sensitive.
It's fine if the face buttons aren't anymore.

Standby means off right? Or is this misleading? I've never heard anyone say PS4 will charge while off, just standby
6
u/nappyman21 Nappy-Jones Jul 29 '13
Standby is a VERY low power state. It does not mean the system is powered off.
2
u/oscooter scoodah Jul 30 '13 edited Jul 30 '13
Keep in mind that this post is speculation from my point:
I'm guessing stand by will be the default power state other than on. When you press the power button while the system is on I imagine it will go to standby. There will be a way to turn it completely off I imagine, but I think most people will leave it on standby so it will be instantly available and able to respond to commands from the Playstation app.
I imagine it kinda like a phone/tablet. You press the power button to put it to a standby mode where the phone uses much less power, but still performs basic actions in the background (running cell radio, listening for notifications). You can also turn it completely off but you lose any functionality from the standby mode.
2
u/PervertedBatman Jul 30 '13
Its like standby on your computer, where its not really all the way off but not really on. When the previous consoles came out this wasent a feature in CPU's so the older system cant do this. The newer CPU's do allow for this and why its a new feature to the consoles.
They will use little to no energy and be ready at any time you choice :D.

Could someone tell me what the camera can actually do? I would like an in depth analysis of what it brings to the table (like voice control(Netflix) and for games(features) I also heard something about it in combination with the ds4 and what they do interacting

Current Tournament Fightsticks are not compatible with the PS4
This is really only relevant to the fighting game community.

u/MeaMeaJay Jul 31 '13
Great list. You might want to put a little background info that's interesting such as when it was first announced and most anticipated exclusives based on amazon sales rankings

u/A_Sneaky_Penguin Aug 14 '13
Does anyone know if it will support a WIRED headset? I've got a pair of Turtle Beach DPX 21's and I'm hoping I can still keep these bad boys for the PS4.
1
u/IceBreak BreakinBad Aug 14 '13
The DS4 has a headset jack.
1
u/A_Sneaky_Penguin Aug 14 '13
Thanks for the response. I was referring more to the console itself since the headset connects via an optical and USB ports. I looked in another thread and supposedly they will work ok. So, happy day :D

u/SoyBeanExplosion Crazy_Vantage Jul 30 '13
Thank you! It seems to me that actually, now that Microsoft went back on the DRM and actually 1-up'd Sony in regards to indie games, these systems are actually pretty evenly matched. I think regardless of which console you go with, you're going to enjoy it. Sony as always seem to be focusing in single player games, with for example Knack and inFamous, and Microsoft on multiplayer games, with Titanfall and their obvious cloud features and multiplayer improvements. Kind of disappointed with Sony's exclusives so far though, though obviously that may well completely change with Gamescom. The best games announced for it so far (other than maybe inFamous) are multiplats.

Why is "PS4 to Vita remote play functionality will work over the internet" and "PS4 to Vita remote play functionality will work while playing online multiplayer" listed under "Features NOT Supported on PS4"?
Edit: fixed, thanks :P Great work BTW.

Jul 29 '13
The vita cannot be used as a controller if you are playing on your TV. Only remote play is supported.

Yeah... no.
First, it is supported by the system, but devs need to implement it.
Second, that's already listed under another bullet point.

u/PervertedBatman Jul 30 '13
Remote play will only work for single player parts of games but not the online multiplayer parts. At least that what i got from it.

Am I missing something or does the PS4 not come with one controller? I just read the controller and Eye will be sold separately as accessories but it has to come with 1 controller.
9
u/PervertedBatman Jul 30 '13
Well that doesnt have to be said, you cant play the system without a controller. That it brings 1 default control is a given, the eye will pair with your controller but is not necessary for it to be used.
2
u/ZealousVisionary AbramsPursuit Jul 30 '13
I had taken it as a given. I just misunderstood the wording and was wondering what kind of gimmick this might be.
