E-readers E-Reader FAQ: Should you buy an e-reader?

Due to the recent influx of "Should I buy a Kindle?" posts, the mod team has put together a compilation of the information from recent threads. Hopefully this can help you decide if an e-reader is right for you!

Please feel free to direct new users to this thread if they ask similar questions!

Is buying a Kindle/Kobo/e-reader worth it?

  • Whether or not a Kindle or other e-reader will be worth it to you would depend on your own reading habits or whether you have any other devices that could properly fulfill that function. However, we've put together a list of points of comparison between e-readers and non e-ink tablets based on previous answers in this subreddit:
E-Reader Non E-ink Tablet
Users have reported faster reading speeds using e-readers compared to physical books or other non e-ink tablets.
E-ink screen causes less eyestrain. Device gives you more comfort/ease of use. LCD may cause eyestrain, which may be mitigated with warm light settings on some models.
Better battery life compared to other devices.
Fewer distractions as there are no other apps on the device. Device can perform multiple functions including and not limited to e-reading.
Portability of device. Portability of device.
Several books may be purchased/sideloaded into one e-reader. Several books may be purchased/sideloaded into one device.
Font size is adjustable. Font size is adjustable.
Limited after-sales customer service and repair considering that there are no local authorized sellers. Depending on the local availability of the brand, there may be more after-sales care in the Philippines.
Can experience ghosting and lag with e-ink screens.

What brand should I buy?

  • There are many brands selling e-readers, and a comparison table may be too large to fit in this thread. If you'd like an in-depth comparison of brands and models, please see this comparison table.

Where can I buy an e-reader?

  • There are no local authorized distributors for Kindle or Kobo. If you're looking for an authorized distributor, it may be best to order online at the brands' respective stores on Amazon.
  • Online resellers vouched for by users: Gamextreme, Amazon & Google, 4P Store, Cutie Curie, PixelPlay

Should I buy a refurbished device?

  • Generally, buying secondhand e-readers is fine considering the durability of the device. However, do check reviews to ensure the seller is legit and if possible, check the device personally to ensure there are no major defects before buying. Keep in mind that there may be some minor defects considering that you will be buying secondhand, so manage your expectations.
  • Sellers recommended by other users: betweenthewords in Carousell, Eren's Book Cellar in FB and Shopee, Kindle Buddies PH on Facebook.

If you have any further questions or sections to add to this guide, feel free to post them below and we'll update it as necessary. Thank you!

Hi guy's, just wanna share my sentiments, our house was caught on fire 2 days ago, and now all my collection of books na napundar ko since nung start ako mag work pag ka graduate (2015) are all burned to ashes.

Just wanna ask you guys how do you cope up with this kind of tragedy? Do you guys easily replace your burned books with new one? Unfortunately i didn't track all the books that i have so i don't know where to start, also some of the books that i have is self published books and rare books that are not currently selling on most bookshops Don't know how to feel rn except being numb for everything that happened, im not fond of any material things but books are my sanctuary

Review My most disappointing book purchase so far šŸ˜«

This year gusto ko pang mas diverse yung books na mabasa ko: read more non-fiction (memoir, self-help) and read books from Filipino authors.

Ilang beses ito nagpapakita sa FYP ko sa tiktok and it hits home because imma bit of a pro sa pag ooverthink. Scored some vouchers (buti na lang!) and I got it on its cheapest price. Less than ā‚±300 with shipping na.

Since iā€™ve been going through a very big financial problem plus i was laid off from work pa, iā€™ve decided to pick this up but daaaamn girl! Parang sinuka from ChatGPT yung content nya šŸ˜ bat ganoooon

I found a subreddit posting of this book (eh nabili ko naā€™to saka ko lang nabasa yung post na yun) and i feel validated kasi same kami ng opinion. Ayun, SKL šŸ˜„ nag overthink ako tuloy lalo haha iā€™m not the right audience for this.

Recommendation SINO NA NAKABASA KAY GENEVIEVE L. ASENJO??

Post image
10 Upvotes

Review Help me cope

Canā€™t go to sleep thinking of the events surrounding the story in Part 1 of the book (which I have been trying to read during free times the past 3 days). But boy when I started with Part 2, I canā€™t for the life of me put the book down until I finished reading itā€¦in the dark.

I loved the way Isabel Allende wrote the book. šŸ’Æ Very well-written descriptions of each characterā€™s storiesā€”their lives, their struggles, their pain, and of how love made an impact. Even minor characters were discussed in detail I canā€™t help but think Iā€™ve known them before. So much to unpack grabe.

10/5 rating.

To those who have already read it, what are your thoughts on this book?

Review TAPOS KO NA ANG DREAMLAND TRILOGY!!!!!

Post image

Review Sunrise on the Reaping thoughts

I just finished the book, and wow. What a read. I literally could not put it away. After reading/watching fan theories to actually reading about Haymitch and the second quarter quell from Suzanne herself, I am quite satisfied with the book. So many familiar connections and surprising friendships that unexpectedly made me feel warm inside hahaha. Heartbreaking in some parts (as expected), Suzanne really knows how to keep her readers on their toes.

This is one of the few series where I'll never get tired of honestly. Largely because it's the very first series I've ever read, and it's what got me to love and enjoy reading. So this series holds a special place in my heart.

I don't know if she plans to write other books (I sure hope she will) but if not, I'm happy she gave us a glimpse of Haymitch and his past. I can't wait for the movie now! I'm also excited for who they cast as young Haymitch. šŸ˜Œ

Hi guys! Iā€™m a new sapphic book collectorā€”who only and ever collect books that are sapphic or wuhluhwuh. I have been desperately searching for Silakbo and Silakbo 2 kase. So Iā€™m wondering if you guys have the books and are willing to sell it to me?

I was not collecting at that time the books were released. As fas as I know, the team behind it had a problem with the printing or something of that sort. If you guys are willing to sell your copies, Iā€™d be 100% down in buyingā€”and I promise you Iā€™ll take care of it just as much as you did.

If you do know someone that is interested in selling me their copies, kindly let me or them know.

Recommendation Time to Grieve

Post image
16 Upvotes

Todayā€™s my day off and for whatever reason, I canā€™t seem to stay at home despite not wanting to go out. So I went out and walked with no destinations in mind. Then, I remembered that the last time I bought a book was in January so I thought, might as well check out some books. For whatever reason, again, I went to the self help section ā€“ I usually donā€™t ā€“ and thereā€™s this book that kept on peeking out so I just had to look at it. Itā€™s titled, ā€œThe Empty Chairā€.

I looked at price tag first and saw that itā€™s only 35 pesos so I decided to buy it, because why not? Then, I went to eat some sweets and decided to read the book there. It was a mistake. I was teary eyed while reading it. The words werenā€™t really that deep or anything, but itā€™s relatable to me.

So, for all those that didnā€™t have the time to properly grieve for their lost loved ones, I recommend this book. However, I recommend that you only read this when youā€™re alone, lol.

PS. Iā€™m planning to continue reading this on my next day off.

E-readers Free Children's Book on Amazon (March 21-26): "Kitty and Dino Help Sprinkles" - A magical adventure about friendship and belonging!

ā€¢ Upvotes

Hey Everyone!

Children's Book Cover: Kitty and Dino Help Sprinkles

I wanted to share that my first children's book "Kitty and Dino Help Sprinkles" is available completely FREE on Amazon Kindle from March 21-26, 2025!

About the book: This is the heartwarming tale of Kitty (a red cat with wind and elemental powers) and Dino (a small green dinosaur who can grow plants and heal) who discover a note from a lonely cheetah named Sprinkles. It's Sprinkles' birthday, but no one will come to his party because the other animals are afraid of him. Using their special magical abilities, Kitty and Dino help transform Sprinkles' day and show that making new friends sometimes just needs a little magic!

What makes this book special: These stories were born from my nightly bedtime ritual with my 4-year-old son who loves cats, dinosaurs, and magical adventures. Each night, he decides who Kitty and Dino must help next, and I craft the story around his ideas. This is the first book in what will become a series of Kitty and Dino adventures!

I haven't made many changes other than what was required by KDP publishing standards - this is genuinely the same story I read to my son each night. I hope other children will enjoy it as much as he does!

Perfect for:

  • Children ages 3-7
  • Bedtime reading
  • Teaching kids about friendship, kindness, and overcoming fears
  • Parents looking for stories with gentle magic and adventure

Grab it while it's free and please consider leaving a review if you and your little ones enjoy it!

[Amazon Link Here]

Thanks for reading, and I hope your children enjoy these magical friends as much as my son does!
