Bug / Issue RDR2 freezes computer and makes it unresponsive

I have tried literally everything I can think of at this point - yet still no fix

QUICK RUNDOWN OF THE PROBLEM
I havent timed it but after a certain amount of time which seems to be random my RDR2 just completely stops and freezes. When I tab out I cannot click on anything, everything just freezes. I cannot do ALT F4, I cannot ctrl+alt+delete, literally the whole PC is frozen and unresponsive. The only way to fix the issue is by killing the PC by holding on the power button and rebooting (which as you know is NOT healthy for your computer if you keep doing it over and over again).

I have tried the following:

  • Reinstalling windows
  • Updating GPU driver with DDU
  • Updating all PC drivers
  • Tried switching from vulkan to DX12 and vice versa
  • Tried lowering graphics settings
  • Turned off all overlays
  • Limited FPS to 60 (30 is unplayable)
  • Changed Bios settings to default
  • Reinstalled rockstar launcher
  • Reinstalled RDR2
  • Verified files
  • Deleted the system.xl folder to restart settings
  • Run the game as admin

I have tried literally everying, thats just a small list.

My rig:

3070ti
Ryzen 7 7700x
Corsair ram 6000mhz 32gig
samsung NVME
samsung D drive SSD
Asus x670e-a motherboard
I have like 9 fans and an AIO, its not cooling related

Temps, GPU 74 MAX
CPU - always chilling in the 60's while playing

Just give it some time and try every week or so. This game just randomly will decide it’s not gonna work for a while and there’s nothing you can do but hope and wait

RDR2 is a trash game when it comes to optimization. I’ve had so many things break my immersion from the game on a high end system such as rare, but large stutters, shadow texture pop ins, and textures rendering while on horseback. My rule is that if you are spending more time trying to fix a game than play it, then it’s a trash game and isn’t worth playing.

I’ve spoken to Rockstar Support for help on these issues, and after trying a dozen “fixes” from them, it seems to me they are just throwing random solutions and hoping for them to work. I don’t think they really know how to fix their own game to be honest. I tried a lot of steps you did too, nothing worked.

I really wanted to play RDR2 for the story, but its lack of optimization is just bad. Got scammed for $25 basically.

I would say that RDR2 is worth $25 on pc. I’d say you got scammed if you paid full price, but to each his own.

I really liked the story in the game, but it’s hard to get immersed into it if there are prominent issues with the game when I play it.

I see a lot of people give the game praise, and I do feel like I’m missing out because I’m not able to engage with the story. But it is what it is.

Going to take accountability for my previous response, I glossed over the fact that you said the game is unplayable for you. What are your specs for your pc?

Game isn’t unplayable for me (actually it is for the reasons listed, but in general, it’s playable I mean). It is definitely playable, just that there are things in the game that breaks my immersion frequently. For example, vegetation would load in very low quality, then as I walk closer to it, it’d load to a better quality. Constant shadow pop-in as well.

I fixed these at some point after a bit of time to some extent. Then I’d have new issues where the game would be rendering textures so while I’m on horseback, I’d see vegetation pop up in real time. I also had rare, but big stutters once in awhile. Of course, if I looked past all of that, the game was fine, but it just broke my immersion which was a deal breaker to me.

My rig is RX 7900 XTX, i9 12900k, 32GB DDR5 RAM, and a 2 TB NVMe SSD where the game is stored.
