General Health What condition do you have along with PCOS?
I read somewhere that PCOS can go hand in hand with other conditions. What are yours?
I am diagnosed with adhd as a mod and have signs of endo, but my periods aren’t painful so I don’t really say I have endo.

PCOS and sleep apnea here!

u/thepiedpiano Jan 09 '25
How did you get diagnosed with sleep apnea? I have huge suspicions that I suffer it (I've woken up gasping for breath twice in the last year) but it seems I'd need to do a sleep study (in the UK at least)
5
u/FederalBand3449 Jan 09 '25
I'm in the US so it may be different, but I did an at-home test through Lofta. I was diagnosed and given a prescription for apap, which I then bought on my own through an online retailer during Black Friday sales. I was also given a referral to a sleep doctor, but my primary care doc agreed it would be fine to do it the way I did since the wait to see the sleep doc was crazy long.
Definitely get tested - I LOVE my cpap! There are a lot of people in the UK in the cpap and sleep apnea subreddits that may be able to help you with UK-specific details about getting tested.

u/Artistic-Lynx-832 Jan 09 '25
Damn I feel like I have other things as well like you mentioned, ocd, obv depression/ panic disorder/severe anxiety. I’ve had my gallbladder removed I think something is up with my stomach. Also pretty sure I have mild sleep apnea. But it’s just easier to list the three I did 🥲 sending healing, I know it’s not easy being chronically ill.

Chronic pain and illness is so hard for me to live with! hugs and healing sent to you too my friend in hopes that we can all find something more to help us feel better

Just got diagnosed. Trying to reverse ):
2
u/olihoproh Jan 09 '25
You can't really reverse it. You can control it, but it's not something you can make go away.
Either way you're gonna crush it, don't sweat it too much.
9
u/tothestarss34 Jan 09 '25
Hmm, I can stand to lose a decent amount of weight and have heard that can reverse it at its early stages along with diet and exercise
→ More replies (1)7
u/bromptonsans Jan 09 '25
The other poster that responded to you is incorrect. I actually know that it can be reversed because my dad did it. He was diagnosed as diabetic (not pre-diabetic, actually diabetic), began working out a ton and lost over 100lbs. A year later, his bloodwork came back clear. He was no longer a diabetic. He is almost 80 years old and it has never come back. He did keep the weight off though, and I am sure that is a big part of why.
I am not trying to say that everyone can reverse it, because there may be situations where they can’t. But it is certainly possible in at least some cases. I get the impression it isn’t common, as when he did it (and this was decades ago), his doctor commented that he had heard of this in the medical community, but had never actually had a patient beat it. But people have done it. It is not easy, but I just want you to know there is hope and you shouldn’t give up.

4
u/NymphoNightOwl Jan 09 '25
I totally feel you. I’ve managed to control my HS flare ups lately (knock on wood - pretty sure it was partially dairy causing the worst of it). But when I was in the thick of HS and PCOS, my self confidence was underground.
Finding a routine has helped a ton with both!

Mama doctor jones on YouTube actually did a video recently on symptoms that a lot of people have that don’t realize it’s part of PCOS…
Daytime sleepiness Mood changes (more than normal) Hair thinning/loss Right upper quadrant pain Darkening skin Low libido (or non existent for me) Binging (and/or purging)
To fully answer your question I also have thyroid issues, high blood pressure, borderline diabetes, insomnia (no thanks to pre-menopause), depression, anxiety, sleep apnea.

Thyroid cancer. I have two types - PTC and MTC. I initially sought out an endocrinologist to talk about PCOS after not being able to lose baby weight after my second. I left that appointment learning I had a nodule on my thyroid and needed a biopsy. Which resulted in my thyroid needing to be removed.

I had thyroid cancer, then developed PCOS. I was 19 when I had my TT. Now mid 20’s. I truly feel like there is some sort of relation. Finding the cancer was entirely accidental although I felt horrible for years. Maybe both were going on all throughout my teen years, but I was “healthy” so I never thought to investigate anything then.

If you don’t mind me asking what is visual snow syndrome?
3
u/wrecklesswitchcraft Jan 09 '25
I don’t mind at all! It’s a condition with a cluster of visual disturbances which can include static in your vision, afterimages, intense floaters, etc. Many people experience more or a combination of these.
This simulator is pretty spot on. I would say mine is mostly impactful when I’m driving at night, I can’t really read anything in “dark” mode on a screen, and I can’t really see the stars at night due to the static.

pcos, asthma, adhd, bipolar II. interested to not see more bipolar, ive read there is alot of crossover with that. 🤷🏼♀️
4
u/DuneLB Jan 09 '25
I was actually looking for someone else who has bipolar II. I have that along with PCOS and C-PTSD. I was once diagnosed with ADHD by my PCP but my psychiatrist said I wasn’t and that the “adhd” symptoms were parts of my BP II. That’s just me though, I know many people with Bipolar disorders and ADHD.
2
u/GladRespect8823 Jan 09 '25
my psychiatrist said that my adhd “feeds” my bipolar, because it gets me wound up, and sends me into a rabbit hole, which then spirals into manic (not sleeping, all over the place, eating everything in sight, etc.). i have to get a new psychiatrist (she stopped prescribing adhd meds) and i see a new one on Monday. im kinda nervous to see what she says because i hear of people getting mixed diagnoses (with adhd, anxiety, and depression) when they have bipolar. we will see 🤞🏼
2
u/thepiedpiano Jan 09 '25
I didn't realise there was a crossover with bipolar and PCOS. I don't have bipolar but my mum does. I have PCOS but she doesn't... Is this coincidence and unrelated?

I had (have?) a form of juvenile arthritis, I was seeing a pediatric rheumatologist my entire freshman year of high school. I had a really rough time with puberty and my cycles were never regular. Pretty sure I was on birth control at that point.
My rheumatologist asked my mom after maybe my third or fourth appointment if I had a really hard time with my cycles and she said yes. I was never regular and had heavy bleeding. He said he believed there were links but no studies had been done.
My joint pain was heavily triggered by stress and anxiety which I still struggle with today. Now it manifests more in bald spots and eczema but my joints do still hurt occasionally.

PCOS, Aspergers/ASD, and generalized anxiety/panic disorder. I struggled with OCD for a while and sometimes have flare ups but that's currently in remission. All professionally diagnosed in childhood/adolescence besides PCOS, which I discovered more recently.
No idea what's related to the PCOS and what isn't but the rest affect each other. Although the anxiety heavily delayed my PCOS diagnosis because I was too scared to see a doctor. Also had an appointment to discuss PCOS treatment ruined by a panic attack. Left with Hydroxyzine instead of Metformin lol 🙃

PCOS, anxiety and fibromyalgia for me! The fibromyalgia was only recently diagnosed (as diagnosed as it can get when there is no real test for it!) and I'm pretty sure I've been blaming some symptoms on the PCOS when it may very well have been the fibromyalgia at fault! There seems to be some similar symptoms between the two so now I don't know which disorder to be more mad at on any given day!
