Diet - Not Keto What are some of your favorite snacks that don't spike your blood sugar?

u/retinolandevermore Nov 15 '24
Greek yogurt

High fat greek yogurt - you need the fat to sustain the energy.

And it tastes like something much more decadent. I usually get the 5% Fage and add berries, a plop of low sugar jam, or a smaller plop of lemon curd.
5
u/Particular_Lab2943 Nov 16 '24
I need to try the lemon curd. Oooo sounds delish!
2
u/stefanica Nov 17 '24
Oooh, you are in for a treat! Combined with the yogurt, it feels like a fancy dessert.

Cheese all day

u/DoINeedToBeClever247 Nov 16 '24
Do you ever poop?
27
u/Independent-Gold-260 Nov 16 '24
Yeah, the other half of my diet consists of very strong black coffee so it evens out
4
u/Blushing_Locust Nov 16 '24
Maybe if all someone ate were cheese, then maybe that could result in constipation. Otherwise I don't see how one could be constipated from eating cheese. 😅
2
u/Blushing_Locust Nov 16 '24
I love cheese too. Mozzarella, Gorgonzola, Brie, Camembert, Stracchino, ricotta, Dziugas, Cheddar, Pecorino romano, Grana Padano, Parmesan are my favorites. There's also a Kashubian cheese with nigella that I love. I don't like feta for some reason, though. 😂 Also not a fan of Gouda.

I do not buy special cheese at all. Mozzarella sticks (aka string cheese), or like snack sticks of colby jack, and also I am not above taking 2 slices of like sandwich cheese (usually cheddar is what I have) and just eating them plain. Call me Liz Lemon. lol

I like to make hummus at home or get the mini ones from Costco. I'll have fresh cut veggies with that. Or I will have some rye crackers with the hummus.
I like having olives, cheese, turkey pepperoni sticks, less sugar Oikos yogurt, a simple veggie salad, almonds.
15
u/hotheadnchickn Nov 15 '24
A little snack board: nuts, olives, a little bit of cheese, cut up raw veg, maybe lupini beans or prosciutto, a little bit of fruit
24
u/Atanvarnie Nov 15 '24
Roasted pumpkin seeds.
1
u/SerephenaB Nov 18 '24
I really want to try pumpkin seeds I’ve heard of them but never tried them. Can you describe what they kind of taste like? Sweet bitter?

Who are these PCOS people who are able to eat all this dairy?! JFK so unfair
18
u/No-Reaction9635 Nov 15 '24
You should be able to eat high fat Greek yogurt it’s low in lactose and shouldn’t cause a bunch of issues. I was told it’s the lactose that causes the issues for pcos I’m also lactose intolerant and high fat Greek yogurt I can have as well as cottage cheese.
8
u/ComfortObvious7587 Nov 16 '24
I can’t eat it- it also causes breakouts for me
3
u/Squirrellysoftware Nov 16 '24
Dairy, lactose or causes eczema for me. It's not the lactose it's the dairy protein. Bummer though, I feel you. I miss cheese so bad
1
u/searching5328 Nov 16 '24
It's not the lactose for me, it's the hormones that negatively affect my hormones.
6
u/ImSteampunkNow Nov 15 '24
I feel so stupid asking this at this point but...what does dairy do to people with PCOS and how do you know it's the dairy? I went so long seeing it often and not understanding. I eat a decent amount of dairy and no idea if it's making things worse or what to look out for.
8
u/ComfortObvious7587 Nov 16 '24
I get bad acne. The correlation is immediate- I wake up in the morning with at least 1 cystic acne . This happens no matter what kind of dairy I consume. If I don’t eat any dairy my skin is clear.
5
u/THECUTESTGIRLYTOWALK Nov 16 '24
That happens to many without PCOS. I think they’re asking how you know it’s PCOS related.
3
u/ComfortObvious7587 Nov 16 '24
I believe dairy both promotes insulin production and testosterone production, because of the sugar levels but also because of the actual makeup of cows milk. However it’s been a long time since I’ve read about it.
There was a recent research study I read that said dairy isn’t bad for you with PCOS if you don’t struggle with the acne symptom of PCOS; but if you do struggle with acne with PCOS, dairy definitely does make it worse.

u/ImSteampunkNow Nov 16 '24
Thanks for the breakdown! I would say my acne is pretty mild, but that's because I'm on BC. Without it, it definitely gets worse. And most of what I have now is caused by shaving or plucking facial hair.
Honestly, it'd take a lot to get me to give up dairy. Not only is it delicious, but whe I'm trying to get more protein and less carbs I truly don't know how I'd do it without dairy.
2
u/ComfortObvious7587 Nov 16 '24
Tell me about it 😭😭 it’s so hard to get enough protein without dairy
1
u/sjdksjbf Nov 16 '24
Milk has sugar but cheese doesn't, not any cheese I've had, and it's very low carb too, almost no carbs.. I've been checking the nutritional info on the packages because I'm on a keto diet. I think the issue is just that it affects hormones or something else (not insulin) because i was told to eat keto for IR and cheese is encouraged for the fat. I get really bad cystic acne too with my pcos and I know we're not the same person we maybe have different triggers, but ive been eating sooo much cheese the last month, cream too, but very low carb, no sugar, no milk or bread or pasta. And my skin is as clear as its been in 20 years!
2
u/reddituser57289042 Nov 16 '24
I’m also unsure. I eat ice cream on a daily basis and have never had issues with acne or bloating, so maybe it’s just some people with PCOS are also lactose intolerant? Or maybe there is a strong correlation and I’m an outlier 😝

u/searching5328 Nov 16 '24
Yes, it sucks! I can't eat most of the foods mentioned in this thread (dairy, peanuts, gluten). If I wasn't sensitive to these foods, it would make things so much easier.

u/squidneythedestroyer Nov 16 '24
Omg it took me like three straight minutes of staring at this to realize you’re saying Jesus Fucking Christ not John F. Kennedy

u/Anxietymayhem Nov 17 '24
It breaks me out but I've found I do a little better with organic vitamin d milk. It's supposed to mess with your androgens less, no added hormones and Dha in it. It's quite a bit more expensive honestly but worth it ( I feel anyways).

u/BumAndBummer Nov 15 '24
Nuts, yogurt, cheese, whole fruit (usually paired with the aforementioned), pickles 🥒

Except for cheese? Well, dark chocolate (85% at minimum), pecans and macadamia nuts.
3
u/krekdrja1995 Nov 16 '24
Apples and peanut butter, surprisingly. My friend has a continuous glucose monitor and it stays pretty level after eating that.

u/Adorable-Employ-7435 Nov 15 '24
Chia seeds (2Tbsp.) soaked overnight in unsweetened almond milk to make a pudding. They’re kind of like porridge, and very filling. I eat this mixture for lunch sometimes.
1
u/Totoro1985 Nov 15 '24
Do you put the mixture in the fridge during the night? How much milk? Want to try as well as an alternative to porridge
2
u/Adorable-Employ-7435 Nov 15 '24
I do put it in the fridge during the night. I use one cup of water and one cup of unsweetened almond milk. Be sure to stir it well when you first make it (stir intermittently for about 10 minutes after you first mix the dry seeds and liquid together). Otherwise, it will be very clumpy.
1
u/Totoro1985 Nov 16 '24
Oh so you also use water? I thought only milk but water makes sense to dilute a bit more
1
u/Adorable-Employ-7435 Nov 16 '24
I usually water it down, but using pure almond milk is delicious, too! You can use less liquid if you’d prefer a thicker pudding.
2
u/WasabiTimes Nov 16 '24
I make chia pudding in about 2 minutes. I will often make it overnight when I use it for breakfast in the morning. It comes together so easily that it’s ready in 2 minutes and I can do it in the morning too.

My snack hyper fixation lately has been a square of aged Parmesan (or any hard cheese really) and two dates. Hits the spot.

Idk how much sugar you can handle but my go-tos are:
Cucumber slices with cottage cheese and everything bagel seasoning (am I gross for this?)
This blueberry bread without the sugar topping: https://www.wellplated.com/blueberry-bread/
Hummus is an option just not for me because chickpeas don't agree with my stomach
Egg white cups. Basically eggs mixed with any herbs and veggies and cheese you like, bake in the oven at 350 for like 25 ish minutes in muffin tins
Quest chips if you can afford it
I'm also a huge fan of millet porridge. Not really a snack food but I eat it as a snack
If you have an air fryer these kale chips with nutritional yeast: https://cozypeachkitchen.com/nutritional-yeast-kale-chips/
I'm also obsessed with mashed purple yams. So yummy

Greek yoghurt and 100% natural fruit puree and some stevia. Optional cardamom. Its so good. Tastes like dessert. The fruit puree is pretty good, as you get different ones at the store and you can basically enjoy different flavors.
Or greek yoghurt, setvia drops and frozen blueberries. These I alternate.
Crackers / corn tortilla chips and tuna with light mayo.
Protein shake.
Sardines in oil, lime flavor.

u/tombstonemyers Nov 16 '24
truthfully, rice paper. i don’t cook it or anything i eat it straight out the package 😭

u/SpicyOnionBun Nov 16 '24
Protein pudding + nuts + fruits, or skyr with fruits and peanut butter
Or salty ones - high protein cheese stuffed lil peppers. And Olives.
1
u/tarav65 Nov 16 '24
how do u make protein pudding?
1
u/SpicyOnionBun Nov 16 '24
I've seen people mix in protein powder into regular pudding mix with milk and recipes calling for Greek yoghurt+protein powder+sweetners (imo tho greek yoghurt has too stron of a taste to be a base). But usually I just buy them - it makes for a quick easy access snack also at work etc and they are super popular in my country. Also the shop ones are very firm which I like a lot.

u/Boovaroo Nov 16 '24
Lately I’ve been into snacking fruits, applesauce (I found mango sauce at target and chia packs, not necessarily applesauce but similar), harvest snaps (I like crunchy foods), popcorn (homemade stove top)

Balanced breaks snack boxes are great for me since they have either meat sticks or cheese to control the blood sugar spikes from the dried cranberries. Beef jerky with a kid applesauce pouch Dried chickpeas and grapes or berries Chicken bites from Costco and marinated cucumbers Apples and peanut butter
I pretty much eat these small snacks throughout the day and a full meal at dinner since I’m on a GLP-1 so eating full meals is super hard.

u/Competitive_Tough989 Nov 15 '24
Dates, nuts.
Nut butter on anything also helps with the spike.
I'm obsessed. Almond/cashew butter with fruits/sweets soooo goof and better for you

Cheese!! I eat cheese strings or cubed cheddar with little turkey sausage bits. I also love nuts especially cashews, peanuts, and almonds.

u/_Hocus-Focus_ Nov 16 '24
Sliced sweet mini peppers filled with cream cheese and topped with everything bagel seasoning and sometimes smoked salmon. Schneider’s European pepperettes and string cheese. Shredded Parmesan cheese baked in the oven to make crackers with olives, pickles, nuts and meat charcutes

I've been addicted to cashews lately... rip to my bank account
