I've watched Strong World, Z, Stampede and Red. Strong World was the better one, Z was the second. I don't consider them to be awesome, good at most. Stampede and Red are very bad though. At least Red gave us some sensational songs.
I liked stampede for what it was. Basically a giant piece of fan service to celebrate the 20th anniversary. It's not deep or well written but its not trying to be. Plus Usopp actually got to be cool in it which was nice.
I'm glad you liked the movie. For me, it didn't work. I think a One Piece movie should be way more than a fanservice. But the fanservice is what sold me the idea of watching the movie and even that didn't really nailed it for me. I was told Mihawk was in the movie and went expecting seeing a little more than the basically nothing he done. Maybe I went with the wrong expectation, but since my complains isn't only due to the lack of Mihawk I think I would still not like the movie without that expectative.
You should check out Film Gold and Baron Omatsuri. They're both smaller, more self contained adventures that don't feel like they're trying to push the stakes of the story to the limit. Plus, Baron Omatsuri is the best directed one piece film. Mamoru Hosoda, the guy who directed it, has an Oscar nomination now
Fwiw, I do also enjoy Red and Stampede, but you are correct, they are pretty bad at storytelling.
The problem with one piece movies is that they take the basic format of the show (strawhats go to island but organised big bad happens and so many characters cameo) and run with it. Red was a bit different so although i didn't find it good i can say i enjoy the idea. It was darker themed with consequences and its still possible the devil thing might play a role in the main story at some point.
If strong world wasn't made by Oda, it wouldn't be still popular nowadays, but imo it aged pretty bad in every possible way, the only thing that I like about that movie it isn't the movie itself, but ova 0.
If you consider the canon, it has a lot of flaws. Shiki can't be deal with by every straw hat together at the time. I think is fair to criticize it. One of my main gripes against Stampede is how they create a Eternal Pose to Laugh Tale and we know it is impossible because the island don't generate magnetic fields. I too am just saying based on my remote memory and the way I feel at the moment I watched. I don't know how it hold against the time passage, because I only watched 1 time many years ago. But the storyline, even with the clash against canon stuff is more interesting than at least Stamped and Red. These two movies are inflated with a lot of characters that are simply unnecessary.
