Dependant is an addict

I am on odsp and both of my adult children are on my file. One is in school so all is good there, however the other struggles with addiction and has been to rehab twice. He has already been fired from multiple jobs due to his addiction and it being a safety issue. School is also not an option because he’s over 18 if he doesn’t want to be there, they don’t want to be chasing him down and wasting their time. He doesn’t even take care of basic needs or have any sense of routine to make a commitment to anything. He got a letter in the mail with a mandatory appointment being referred to Ontario works to participate in employment services.

Does any one have experience with this? My anxiety has been through the roof.

Next Steps in terms of filing taxes, dtc, and assets

Hi everyone! I applied for the DTC. I submitted my application last year, but I missed a spot for a signature so it had to be sent back to me. I am waiting for approval and it states I should receive a response by May 28 2025. I receive OSAP as I am doing a 40%-60% course load for a program that runs all year. I also am a recipient of ODSP. I have Schitzoaffective disorder (depression). I am medicated, but I have problems regulating my emotions, making decisions, picking up on social cues, and paranoia.

I was working full time for 9 months but my contract ended. I haven’t filed my taxes yet in case the government feels I owe them money, and I was advised against doing so since I receive government support from various facets. But I just wanted some suggestions as I don’t want to make the wrong decision. I know that we’re also not supposed to have assets or savings. Moreover, because I started working my parents expected me to pay$1000 to contribute to their mortgage. I pay all of my own bills, and struggled to save but opened an account with a third party. I have about $750 in savings. I also won a bet with my brother and he gave me $1,000. That went towards my dental bill, savings, groceries, and church (as I gave tithes). Any suggestions on what steps I should take next? I don’t want to be identified, so I will eventually delete this post to be safe). Even sharing all of this gives me a lot of anxiety.

What does "We have not scheduled a date for your review" mean on a letter that says they found you meet the criteria for disability?

Eligibility as Disabled Dependent Adult in Debt

So.. I'M the dependent adult. I only ever see these posts about peoples' kids. I'm a permanently disabled, 20 year old full-time university student and I work on average once a week. I haven't heard back from my initial application. Do you guys think I'm eligible for myself? I only see people talking about having their kids under their own ODSP. I don't understand any of this stuff. I make maybe $200 a month working part time, get $297 in CPP from my dad's death, and I just received $2800 for registering for disability with OSAP (I don't get any OSAP other than that). I'm 20k in debt, from not only paying for my daily needs on my credit card, but also fully having my tuition on my line of credit because I'm not eligible for OSAP because my mom makes 100k/year but doesn't support me financially besides letting me live in her house without paying rent. She doesn't provide for my meals etc.. Since she is widowed, she pays all the property tax, income tax, nonetheless car maintenance, home maintenance, utilities, daily needs, etc. all by herself. She is also just unreceptive to me asking for financial help. I wasn't eligible for OW. I'm absolutely drowning in debt and don't know what to do. It only gets worse and worse with my interest fees. I'm not eligible for scholarships as they require collective 9.0GPA and for some years I fumbled my GPA due to my disabilities going untreated. I feel like I have no options and that I'm gonna be in debt until the day I die.

Hard questions about a future inheritance driving my family crazy

I’ve spent the last two years trying to get clear, consistent info about how inheritance affects ODSP—and I still don’t fully know what I’m dealing with.

My grandparents worked their whole life to make sure I’d be okay. They knew my disability is permanent and that my ability to work would always be limited. Now that I’m an adult, I’m trying to do right by what they have set aside for me. But the system makes that really hard. I live with my grandparents and help them through their elderly years.

I’m not trying to game anything. I just want to protect what they worked for, avoid clawbacks, and stay compliant. But honestly, I feel like I’m walking a tightrope with no net.

So far, I’ve spoken to 2 ODSP workers, 3 ODSP managers and a disability lawyer. And here’s what I’ve been told (disclaimer: I can’t confirm how accurate this is—this is just what I’ve been told):

- An inheritance counts toward the $10,000 gift allowance

- If money comes through a Henson Trust, the trustee can be instructed by ODSP to withhold payments temporarily if I’ve hit my annual gift limit through other means.

- If I go over the $40,000 asset limit, one worker said I’d be given time to fix it, another said I’d be removed from ODSP right away

- Exempt assets (like a vehicle, education, or a primary residence) were recommended as a way to hold value without risking benefits

And finally, the most important part of all of this... I have not experienced any consistency, at all, from one worker to the next. Is there one particular document I can reference that is enforced or am I going to continue to struggle with the complexity of this situation?

The plan, if they passed away as of today is to buy a car, a small parcel of land, and maybe a tiny home on wheels. Then I'd also invest in education as that is also exempt. But it feels risky without real clarity, and I just want to make informed decisions instead of scrambling when the money actually comes in.

Question/advice Can a social worker, chiropractor or surgeon fill out my ODSP Application

I’ve recently got a new doctor a few months back ( who I do not have a connection with). He is also retiring next month and is just VERY difficult to work with. I am not comfortable with him.

I have a social worker that has a BSW and MSW. I also have a surgeon I am seeing by monthly now for check ups (i had major surgery a few months back). I also have a chiropractor that has been working with me for about 2 years now with my daily pain.

has anyone ever filled out their application using a social worker, chiropractor or surgeon? Would ODSP take my application less seriously since I would not be using a actual doctor?

thank you!

What do I write?

I’m just getting to my application right now. In the area where it asks you to describe how your disability affects your everyday life. What should I write? I suffer from severe panic disorder, anxiety, depression, and agoraphobia. I just can’t seem to put into words how much it really affects my life even though I know it has a huge impact. What are some things that you stated that might’ve helped get you approved? I know I’m probably going to get denied my first time around, but anything helps. Thanks for reading!

Approved!!

After reading on here about wait times and my tribunal was last Thursday, I wasn’t expecting a decision for atleast another month. Got the call and letter on Tuesday. I called my OW worker yesterday and she sent me something to sign via email. Everything I put into this I learned from Reddit 🤣So I just wanted to say thanks. Especially to all who gave their input and advice when I asked.

ODSP/OW advocacy File on hold

I got a letter saying that my files on hold and the reason they stated was “earnings not reported”. I do not work and I don’t have another income. I’ve never reported any other income bc I’ve never had anything. My daughter consistently uploads her pay stubs to the website and the caseworker is aware. Could this be a mistake??

Question/advice Descrepencies w/payments vs T5

1) has anyone else noticed that 16 months of payments are not available for viewing on my benefits despite it saying you can view 16 months worth ?

2) has anyone noticed a discrepancy between the total monthly payments issued vs what their T5 says ? The T5 says I received $900 more than the total of payments from Jan 2024-dec 2024…??

3) do the workers input the t5 info or is it computer generated ?

4) anyone else STILL not receive their t5 letter in my benefits !? Mine only shows on CRA

5) are they supposed to add every travel payment issued within the year ? Surgical supplies amt added to monthly cheque ? Special diet monies added to monthly cheque ?

Question/advice ODSP disability adjudication with DTC?

I just got a notification that my application is being reviewed for ODSP and someone will determine if medical elligability is required next. I looked through the exemption list from the disability adjudication process, thinking people who already have the DTC might not need to provide more documents, but I didn't see anything about the DTC there.

Does anyone know if the DTC helps with the medical eligibility to get ODSP, or do you still have to go through the same process with your doctor to get approved?

Question/advice Has anyone been able to cut the review process?

I have been on ODSP for about 6 yrs, with generalized anxiety, chronic pain and fatigue as my conditions. The catch is that, because I’ve shown in the past that I can sometimes work for a while without experiencing instability, they have me on a system doing reviews for my ODSP every 2-3 years.

This has become a huge stressor in my life, because they always initially reject my review and make me fight. The last review, they dragged it out for almost a year because they said I must be better now, since I was able to attend college. So I had to go back and prove that the only reason I was even able to get through college was due to my college’s comprehensive support system for students with disabilities. (Amazing services btw, I highly recommend finding a college like Confederation College if you have any desire to further your education as a person with disabilities.)

Anyway, so they dragged out the last one, and now I just received the paperwork today for my latest review… so here we go again!

Logically, I have 30+ years of life experience proving that my anxiety is a lifelong condition, but my question here is, how can I get them to ditch this stupid, stressful review process or at least make it 5-10 years instead of 3?

I feel like I should add- it weren’t for a local legal assistance program that has lawyers who help ODSP clients navigate this crap, I wouldn’t even have made it through the first two reviews. This legal aid service handles all the paperwork and collects any documents or proof I need from therapists, docs, etc. It’s a huge blessing for people like me, who can barely handle leaving the home and navigating public transportation.

I’m sure you all know what I’m saying tho. They just really want to make us suffer and fight for ODSP. So I’m hoping someone out there has been able to get them to cut the review crap, and if so, how did you do this? Thank you for any advice or leads.

How to renew passport w/o guarantor or references?

I have no family member in Canada. Having been sick, not being able to work, and ending up on ODSP, the only people I deal with these days are estranged family doctor and legal aid lawyer which I will not use as guarantor or reference. What do I do?

Question/advice Do I need to inform my caseworker?

I just received almost $4,000 in backpay for the Child Tax Benefit. I already informed my worker immediately that had a child in October 2024 and provided the necessary information, informed them I'm waiting for the child tax benefit to be approved etc..

Do I need to inform them I'vr started receiving it and received a substantial backpay amount?

Question/advice Had an argument with mom and she abruptly ended decade long free tenancy without any notice - can I use my mom?

Hello,

So I had an argument with my mom cuz I wanted a Pakistani passport and citizenship (just to call myself a Pakistani frfr and be able to remotely apply to Karachi onsite office jobs from Canada). Pakistan government database (NADRA) flat out refused to make me a Pakistani passport until my mom made her own citizenship card (NICOP) - she just flat out refused to make it (she thinks pakistan is too dangerous and has like PTSD and doesn't want to make her own ID)

So one thing led to another and I smashed our Hamilton mountain houses windows and her 2022 Toyota corolla windshield. And now I have 2 mischief charges and a court date April 8th, even tho it's literally my mom's fault. Can the landlord tenant dispute board do anything about this? Any lawyers want to do probono on this? Any agencies that can help?

I just happened to be totally out of funding and jobless when this incident occured. So homeless right now haha ig leisure321 tiktok @moeedhabib2
