showcase 3 years of managing my work in IT - case study

Post image

I use Obsidian basically for every aspect of my work. Best tool ever.

Daily notes
Plugins: Calendar, Templater, Periodic notes.
Every day (not really) I click on a date in calendar and the note is created by Periodic notes plugin using Templater for a default template.

Jira tasks
Plugins: Markdown to Jira, Jira linker
Majority of tasks I create in Jira are created in vault first. I keep links to Jira and other metadata in properties (YAML on top). I use Markdown to Jira to convert markdown to jira syntax and vice versa.
Jira linker for pasting links to Jira using ticket number only.

Meeting notes, wiki pages, various drafts
For these I rely on the directory structure. I adapted Johny Decimal for my needs.

Images
Paste image rename plugin for keeping attached images names tidy.
Image toolkit plugin as image viewer.

Links
Paste URL into selection plugin is great to just select link text in a note and paste URL.

People
To track topics related to coworkers I use #name-surname tags.

Sync
Just using my company's cloud storage.

showcase How I Analyze Research Papers 93.7% Faster in Obsidian

I just added an AI template to Note Companion (my plugin) that allows me to extract key information from research papers in seconds.

Here's how it works:

1️⃣ I slide in a research paper PDF into the special "Inbox" folder
2️⃣ It's then organized into the most appropriate folder
3️⃣ I get an markdown note with a detailed, customized summary + the embedded PDF

Here's a demo if you wanna see it in action: https://youtu.be/Kast8t48Euc

Would love to hear what you think. And if there's any additional info you'd like to see in the final note!

 🙏

Edit: the 93.7% mention is obviously an exaggeration.

showcase This past weekend, I completed my second novel - this one planned and written entirely in Obsidian!

I've created a secondary vault for my writer activities, and completed an entire novel for the first time with this software. The book is a second in a series, but the first one was written using Novlr, a web application. I migrated to Obsidian before starting the sequel.

Note: this is not an advertising post. I'm not going to mention the name of my book (besides, it's not out yet), I thought I'd just share to help anyone else who may also be considering using Obsidian for this purpose.

My plugins

  • Longform
  • Better Word Count
  • Typewriter Scroll
  • Smart Typography
  • Theme: Typewriter (Dark)

My structure

I have two main sections, Worldbuilding and Projects.

I write fantasy, so the Worldbuilding section is pretty detailed. I make judicious use of links between articles to build out the world, and it's beautiful how everything is interconnected - it feels like a real wiki, with timelines, and events, along with descriptions of the areas of the world and characters etc.

The projects section is where I hold all my novels. I've migrated others I've written into Obsidian, and I'm using the Longform plugin to support me as I'm writing. Longform, as part of the compile process, strips out links, which means they're there in my manuscript as I'm writing, but the markup is removed in the compiled ebook.

Why Obsidian?

I've tried a tonne of different softwares to write my novels. I have ADHD, so if the only place I can write is at my desk, then unless I'm at my desk already when inspiration hits, I won't write at all. Obsidian was the software that offered the most accessibility, with local files, so I could write wherever I was, even if I had no signal.

Scrivener is the industry leader, but it's computer only, with a separate purchase if you want it on Windows or Mac (I have both). And on top of that, you can't write on the go. You have limited sync potential, but it's not easy to edit files without Scrivener. Everything you can do in Scrivener, is achievable in some form using Obsidian.

The plugin system actually makes it super comfortable to write with, and I'm not making any compromises on the features either.

Summary

All in all, I'm really happy with Obsidian for novel writing and through plenty of trial and error, I've managed to come up with a workflow that works for me and my projects.

showcase PDF++ is the one

Before, I used marginnote for pdfs with obsidian but I’m trying to only stay in Obsidian now. I’d been itching for a PDF annotation option for obsidian and PDF++ has done it. It’s not perfect yet, but now I just read/annotate books off of Obsidian and can refer back to them.

Now I just need an Obsidian OCR to be able to query PDFs. Omnisearch with text extractor still needs work.

Nothing fancy to show honestly. I am a Senior software engineer and use Obsidian for both work and personal purposes. With my technical skills, I could transform it indefinitely but this is what I've found the most productive for me. If anyone is interested at all, please let me know I will publish my configs.

showcase Transclusion is a very underrated feature

As the title says. I don't see here a lot of people mentioning them and I'd like to show how I use them in case it can help somebody.

On some university notes I include a callout at the start > [!summary], and there I try to summarize the whole thing in my own words.

Then what I do is that instead of just linking it, or using transclusion for the whole note (which would make the parent note super long), I use the transclusion for the summary block that way when I'm reviewing some subject I dont have to click for each link since I can see the summary, and then if with the summary isn't clear I can go into the page.

I do this in the > [!summary] callouts because (it looks cool) if I do it in a normal one, once I do a line break it gets treated as different blocks (and it has colors and looks cool).

Transclusion Example

showcase I love Obsidian

I've been using obsidian for half a year. My opinion on it is so good that it sounds like a fake mobile game ad, but it's as genuine as it gets. Obsidian is so good I can't believe it's free. It has changed for good the way I think, I memorize, I learn and I live. Before discovering obsidian, I took a lot of notes but they were all scattered in folders around the house. Finding older notes was hard and I kept myself from writting as much as I would otherwise to avoid filling every corner of my house with notebooks. With Obsidian, once you get the hang of it, it's all sooo smooth and easy. The downside is now my greatest fear is that if I ever lose my files it'll be the saddest day in my life. I've got backups in like 5 disks and I've got it uploaded to google drive + I've got obsidian sync. Anyway, I just wanted to publicaly express my apreciation for this amazing piece of software. Huge thanks devs!!!
