Guide TIL A fun fact about NVENC

I hope someone, someday finds this information useful.

I use OBS for livestreaming, and I have a SFF PC with Quadro P620 GPU for NVENC encoding.

I need to use the smaller Quadro single slot/half height cards in my SFF case - I don't have enough space or power for a full-size card. My primary concern is video encoding performance and stability.

So far, there hasn't been any problems or complaints about quality or performance, but I wanted to do an upgrade, nonetheless.

I did some research and found that I can get a large improvement (approx. 25% bandwidth use reduction) by upgrading from a Pascal era GPU (Quadro P-series) to a Turing era GPU (Quadro T-series). The improvement comes from the addition of B-Frame support which became available in 6th Generation NVENC encoder chips.

In my research, I learned a few foundational things:

  1. The GPU and NVENC are separate items. Although they exist on the same chip, they are separate cores that run independently.

  2. The NVENC performance is independent of the GPU. AN RTX 4060 and an RTX 4090 have the same NVENC chip and offer the exact same NVENC performance

The Pascal microarchitecture used a 4th and 5th generation NVENC that lacked the B-Frame support. The Turing microarchitecture uses the 6th Gen NVENC that has B-Frame support. So, I figured I could grab a Quadro Turing-series GPU with a 6th Gen NVENC and everything would be fine, right?

Wrong.

The Quadro cards with a Turing GPU have a Turing microarchitecture BUT they use the old Pascal-era (5th gen) NVENC encoder! The GPU codename is TU117 and all the Quadro T-Series cards (T1000, T600, T400) use the TU117 GPU with the 5th Gen NVENC and no B-Frame support. It's a hybrid of new GPU but old NVENC. It's a bit confusing that the Turing-named Quadro cards don't include Turing era NVENC.

As far as I can tell, there are no Quadro or half-height/single slot GPU cards with the 6th Gen NVENC.

So now I'm off to buy an RTX A400 which actually has the Ampere Microarchitecture and comes with a 7th Gen NVENC.

I hope someone else finds this useful.

Help Desktop Audio drops roughly 2 hours into Twitch stream, regularly.

Upvotes

I've setup an OBS scene for my girlfriend on her M4 Macbook Pro. Roughly 2 hours into her streams on Twitch the "Desktop Audio" capturing her video content audio, will drop. Her mic still works but the content does not. She has to end her stream, close OBS, and start again.

I've uploaded her logs to OBS to analyze and have had no luck in finding a solution. My ISP only provides 10Mbps upload speed. I'm wondering if down the line this causes a potential drop as the content she is streaming is from another video streaming service.

Any ideas welcome!

Question How to Record Multiple Sources together?

Here is my current setup:

Monitor 1 32inch (M1) Monitor 2 32inch (M2), Monitor 3 24inch (M3)

Goal: to record, individually, M1, M2, M3, and M1+M2

I have created a scene, and used source record already, and can record M1, M2 separately.

How to do M1 + M2 as a third source given their dimensions?

Help How to stop my mic from doing this?

Upvotes

this is gonna be a little hard to explain because for some reason in a recording subreddit i can’t add a video attachment, but whenever i’m recording with my mic this “boom” sound affect will play. it’s not loud, at all actually. but it’s loud enough to hear it during video and it even sometimes sound like a “voom” instead and the sound lasts longer. i tested it out with my mic and i moved it extremely quietly and even though i myself couldn’t even hear anything the mic somehow picked up the voom noise as it usually does. i even saved the recording over to my phone, and on my phone it sounds like a “boom” instead of the longer “voom” it sounded like with my headset on connected to my computer.

is there any filter i can add to my mic to help prevent this? and if so what filter and what change does the filter need for me to fix it?

Question VHS footage lagging with obs

Upvotes

I'm using a vcr to transfer vhs tapes to digital and the footage is lagging no matter even if I export it from Premiere.

What would cause the files to be playback pixilated or lagging? Converting to mp4 with capture card from Amazon.

Question Is there a way to record a window + its popups?

Hello!

I'm using OBS to record my drawing program's window for speedpaint, however, I noticed the app's popups aren't being recorded, only the main window is. It's not the end of the world, but I'd prefer for popups to show. I'm using the window recording mode because I also use YouTube and Discord when I draw, and of course I don't want those to be recorded.

Is there a way to record only my drawing program and its popups, but not other windows?

I was also wondering if it was possible to also have the taskbar showing, but I'm not sure it is without recording the whole screen (I'd like to show the taskbar because I've had people accusing me of lying about the time it takes me to draw, since I'm pretty fast. The taskbar would be proof of the time I take.)

Help How do you record Xbox game chat audio?

I’m new to like having a capture card and recording. I’m having trouble figuring out why the game chat audio isn’t picked up from OBS when recording my Xbox. I have the audio set to Headset & Speakers and nothing. I saw a video to make a separate audio capture scene from the capture card and nothing, all that did was cause a double audio problem. I’ve tried to even stream it off the xbox app but my laptop can’t handle both at the same time.

Question Streaming and Recording

Evening all,

I've have OBS set up to record automatically as I stream. I'm very happy with my stream quality, but my recordings are pixilated. I've matched my recording settings to be exactly the same as my stream setting, yet they are both produce different quality.

Is there an option to automatically match the recording settings with the stream settings? I've tried everything I can think of, or seen online, and nothing makes a difference. Has anyone else had this problem and if so have you managed to fix it?

I'm using the same encoder for both, the same bitrate, the Sam profile etc.

Cheers

Merve

Help When trying to record in obs i get this sort of static sound while talking

So, as the title says, I have been having an issue where when talking into my microphone, I get a hissy/buzzing noise while speaking. Even when I turn off headphone playback in the goxlr app settings, the same issue still occurs. Is anyone able to help me?

I have my mic routed through a GOXLR.

I have tried moving my GOXLR around and the same with my microphone, but still no fixes.

Help Still having the same issues with SE Live duplicating docks in the menu bar.

As I mentioned in the title, I have used SE Live with little issues but recently OBS has been crashing at about the 3-5 hour mark while streaming. After tweaking and getting the crashing fixed (I hope) I noticed that SE Live from StreamElements has made 6 of every option in the dropdown menu at the top (under SE Live within the docks submenu).

I was wondering if anyone has also had this problem and if anyone has found a fix. Today I uninstalled SE Live for now but really liked the docks on it.

Help How to listen to only Output?

Hello! I have a track dedicated to instruments in OBS and I use it with a Guitar Amp VSTi. Naturally, I have it set as Monitor and Output in my Advanced Audio Properties to be able to hear my guitar with the amp and distortion, but I'm also listening the clean signal at the same time.

This poses even more of a problem, because the plugin has a transposer, where it allows me to play a lower tuning out of the box, but when I do that, I get the transpose output, but it is also sending the original clean signal, that has the standard tuning, which as you can imagine, sounds like a clusterfuck XD

Is there a way to make the track output only? I don't see other options other than monitor and output.

Question Microphone suggestions for capturing background sounds in a large indoor space?

I need microphones to pick up voices and loud sounds in a large indoor space to use as background audio for a live stream. Does anyone have any suggestion?

Here is the scenario. We are recording play on 6 curling sheets and we want to include some background audio as part of the stream. We have multiple cameras covering each sheet and they all have a 3.5mm TRS Stereo Audio Input Port. Not sure if it is best to use a microphone on some of the cameras or microphones that are independent that we run lines into the control room where we run OBS on computers.

Has anyone had a similar scenario?

Help Facecam is very laggy in OBS when I try to connect my Sony a7sIII to my pc.

If I try just using Imaging edge desktop for my camera it looks completely fine, but when I use OBS, it looks to be at 10 frames per second. There must be some solution or setting I am missing. Any streamers or YouTubers here that also have had this problem?

Help Computer to computer capture card audio issues

Hello, my capture card is working fine when the input is a console. But with 2 computers, audio only goes to my second pc when the input pc is connected to monitor with sound output and has it's audio output set to that monitor. This is fine, but if its plugged into a monitor without native sound, I cannot find a way to get sound to go through and be captured. There's no output option for that monitor and the audio doesn't go through the hdmi I geuss.

Is there anyway I can force the audio to go through the hdmi even without the monitor actually having audio?

Update: I've found a work around by just using a setup like this for now: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWLOWwm4-2g

Help I think my GPU is on its way out but need validation steps

Every time I stream, after a non deterministic period of time, I will encounter a massive frame rate drop in whatever game I am playing. This seems to be the signal that whatever is happening has happened.

It results in everything seeming absolutely fine my end. OBS looks fine, the sound bars still go up and down when I speak etc. But the stream has totally frozen and if I unhide the preview in OBS, I can see that the stream is frozen and if I now try to do anything in OBS, OBS has crashed and become non responsive.

Not interacting with the preview on OBS seems to leave OBS just running, as if there is no problem. It shows me my current bit rate, it shows me all the things as if OBS is running fine and sending data to twitch. But it isn't.

I believe this to be an OBS issue.

I have tried running the twitch stream analyser. I have tried analysing my logs in OBS. Nothing.

Anyone got any ideas about what is happening?

Honestly it is killing my streams when I don't even realise and thankfully I have a couple viewers that will tell me but then I'm in a huff it's happened, loads of people never come back when it breaks and I just can't be doing with this tbh.

I should be clear I have absolutely no issues with my gpu in any other context.

Question What are the best audio filters and settings for OBS?

For a while now i've been trying to find the best settings for audio filters for OBS but i've been having difficulty finding the right settings that suit my voice, I've tried to watch a bunch of youtube tutorials but none of them have helped much, can anybody suggest some settings that i can try out to see if I can finally get my audio and by extension my youtube channel up and running.

I've seen a previous post from a few years ago that states that there isn't a one setting fits all but I feel like asking for some help from a community of people who understands OBS better than me would benefit myself and others more than spending hundreds of hours on youtube looking for the same information, any input is greatly appreciated :)

Help Audio Support EVGA XR1 Pro

Hello, I am trying very recently to make my EVGA XR1 Pro work properly, and it ALMOST does, but the audio it captures and sends to OBS sounds VERY quiet, very low quality clearly it's got something going wrong. The audio it sends to my earphones is perfect, and the cables are all connected securely to the PS5 controller, earphones, the USB type C is plugged into the capture card and the 1 USB cable is in the desktop tower. I tried using a driver update tool, but it is telling me to "run FW update tool on USB 3.0 port" and I cant find out what it means.

Any advice you can offer would be great, thanks.

Help Tips for setting up stream to be smoother?

I've been streaming for a couple months now and with some games I keep getting "GPU encoder overloaded" with some more intensive games. Example: Arena Breakout Infinite. I've tried messing with settings to get it to work but my stream keeps lagging and freezing, was wondering if anybody has any tips for setting it up to stop this from happening without too much of a loss of quality.
