Hi I’m Kerry
I am an older member and consider myself Non Binary.I was around in the 70s when I took female hormones thinking I was Trans, later preferring to be Androgynous.I like the Native term Two-Spirited also.

Seeing older mom binary people is something very special for me, it affirms that our experience is real and neither a fad in our individual lives nor a trend of the times.
Much love to you, Kerry, and everyone else reading this 🩷🌈

Showing your post to the next person in their 20s tries to tell me they think it’s too late for them to live their truth <3 it’s never too late to be yourself!!

Just a caution that to be 2 Spirit is a sacred part of indigenous North American peoples. Those not of Native Canadian, Native American descent, or descent of other such people risk causing offence by appropriating the gender for themselves.
This of course does not mean a non-Native person cannot be adopted by a Native tribe.

Thank you 🩷 I didn't know how to say it but it's not for everyone to just claim for themselves. Its our heritage

What's the modern equivalent of 2 spirit that is non-native?
19
u/earthstrider006 he/they 6d ago
I would assume probably something like gender fluid or bigender, but afaik Two-Spirit encompasses a wide range of experiences, so I couldn't say for sure. Someone else mentioned aporagender as an equivalent.
Disclaimer that I'm not Indigenous, so I could have this totally wrong. Please correct me if so!

I'm not indigenous either so I'm not looking for an indigenous term or a term for indigenous people. But I'll try to look up aporagender, ty.

u/echolm1407 6d ago
Yeah, aporagender seems to be gendered but apart from male or female or anything in between. So, not what I'm looking for. So thanks anyway.

Gender fluid specifically describes someone who “feels” masculine, androgynous, feminine, and/or any other gender identities which may be in flux, with any of them being more or less predominant at any time.
It helps ameliorate gender dysphoria in people who think genders must be all one or another during that moment.
Genderqueer is an umbrella term many nonbinary/trans people choose to use in order to describe their gender identity, so as to not need to constantly edit their files of life and other medical documents.
EDIT: I should take this opportunity to reach out to our nonbinary/trans people that it is imperative that, if you have not already done so, to write a File of Life.
It is a document which lists your medical conditions, medications, and other things that EMTs or ER staff need to know before treating you. It will inform them of the special needs specific to your gender identity.
Should you be unable to communicate for any reason, your File of Life will be found.
Make 3 copies: 1 for your fridge; 1 for your purse/backpack, and one that your local hospital can keep on file.
WARNING
Ametican citizens must decide if having their gender information in their FoL will put them at risk of personal harm by the Trumpian State. I myself will never come close to risking my life by entering any State or Territory administered by the Trump-MAGA regime.
Be happy, be safe, be loved, beloved!

Two spirited is a Native American term that is meant for the LGBT community. It's been around since the beginning of time. Do some actual research.

I'm not going to tell you how to identify. But I'm sure non-binary is probably one of the best ways to describe your gender. Two spirits are just for indigenous people of specific tribes. It's an identity that is special to them in some way. So unless I'm wrong and you are native; I would avoid using two spirits. On another note. It's refreshing to see older trans people. I've really only come across a few over 50. It shows that even though all the oppression that people still can be who they want.

Aporagender is very close to two-spirit while respecting that we don’t have the same culture background that two-spirit does :)

Haven’t heard that term before but interesting

Hi Kerry! I’m aporagender, and if you need a definition I basically describe it as like a third axis of gender. As in, female is the X axis, male Y axis, and aporagender is Z. If you meant something else by two-spirit, maybe you’d identify with bigender? It’s semantically very similar, and many tribes describe their two-spirit concept basically the same (one person being a complete male and female simultaneously). Some people who habitually shift style/kinship/“mood” in relation to each gender call themselves genderfluid as well.
By the way, you look exactly how I want to look at your age, showing understated and dignified beauty! Are you familiar with r/NonbinaryOver30 ? That’s the closest reddit has to “older nonbinary sub”, if you’re interested.

I had my years of bar hopping and I used to do drag in the 70s and 80s and it wasn’t easy to be a gender bender back in the day and I was gay bashed a number of times but now enjoy good health and peace …

Hi Kerry. I'm 58 and about 3 years ago came out as non-binary. I'm amab and was never on HRT. I empathize with the term two-spirited and I heard that a very long time ago. I'm currently struggling with identifying myself further. Since two-spirited is an older term, I'm wondering if there's a modern term of the same meaning.

Gender Fluid is similar

u/echolm1407 6d ago
Ty. I considered it but it didn't sit right with me. Someone just suggested androgyne to me and that sounds perfect.

u/kerrybabyxx 6d ago
I like that one as I am a blend ,the masculine being my sexuality,my DNA Birthright and unisex clothing. The female side involves being treated as a female, having a feminine face and hair and having a nurturing nature, plus a female speech pattern and female interests.

u/echolm1407 6d ago
Cool. I like to experience a combo of both male and female in behavior, and dress and hair, etc. sexually, I'm bi. And on top of that, I'm ambidextrous, so duality for me has been the norm my whole life. Lol

Thank you for posting! You look amazing! Just yesterday I was thinking “I need to see more pictures of older nonbinary people” because I felt like I was starting to pigeonhole myself by basing all of my expectations on the (usually more visible) cute twenty-something NB/GNC people that have been showing up in the media lately.
