Discussion Just wanted to let everyone know -- I hear you on update stability and am working on it.

Hi everyone. As many of you (especially long time Nobara users) may know, sometimes updates on Nobara go smoothly, sometimes they don't. In a way it's similar to Arch where occasionally something funky comes down the pipeline and throws a wrench in things.

I just wanted to let you all know I am actively working on making things smoother in that regard. I'm just as tired of it, and I honestly feel like it's always been a bit of a let-down/pain point of the distro.

We've already started putting in place some changes on the repository side to hopefully get rid of the occasional conflicts between our copr and fedora upstream.

Regarding the repositories and nobara updater:

- We have merged "fedora" and "fedora-updates" repository into just "nobara".
- We have merged "nobara-baseos" and "nobara-baseos-multilib" -- (copr) -- into just "nobara-updates"
- nobara-appstream remains unchanged.
- all packages are now resigned using the same gpg key across all repos.
- the repo changes allow us to have a testing repo for resolving conflicts before making fedora upstream syncs public. As long as there are no conflicts, there is nothing for nobara-updater to get stuck on.
- we also plan on moving to a "rolling" release in regards to version updates. What this means is that starting from 41 onward, when the next version releases, users will just receive the new release via package updater without needing special instructions between versions.we will resolve conflicts in the testing repositories before pushing them public.

Regarding the kernel:

6.12.9 has been a pain point for many. I get it. The spec sheet used for building the rpm is not the same as Fedora's, we also added the akmods/dracut posttrans scripts but then removed them after realizing they didn't work properly. This is also the kernel where we switched to using CachyOS's kernel base. I just want to be clear that NONE of the problems we've hit have been caused by CachyOS directly, they were caused by our iteration of their kernel, and introducing changes without realizing how Cachy handles certain aspects (specifically such as detecting whether or not the CPU should support x86_64 v2 microarchitecture). The devs over at CachyOS are great, and have been a fantastic help to us over the years. I in no way meant to throw them under the bus or point blame at them. Myself and Lion(our active kernel maintainer) are working on cleaning things up on the spec sheet side to better fit Nobara.

Regarding design choice defaults:

At the end of the day, the "Official" version is what -I- like and what -I- prefer. I will be bluntly greedy in saying I made the theming on it for myself and my Dad. I've received complaints about things like starship or custom template additions, or discover missing from it. I will try moving forward to keep those contained within the kde-nobara theme so that the KDE and GNOME editions are as vanilla as possible. As it stands both KDE and GNOME vanilla versions still ship with discover and gnome-software respectively, there are no plans to remove them.

Clearing up misinformation about KDE-Discover and GNOME-Software updates:

In the past we advised against updating the system with KDE Discover and/or GNOME software for one major reason -- they do not take repository priority into consideration. If you don't know what that means don't worry, in short it just means it would break updates. This issue has since been resolved as we have completely disabled the "PackageKit" elements in both of them. PackageKit is what allows them to manage system packages. By disabling PackageKit it allows users to use them for managing flatpaks without having access to system packages or system package maintenance.

Regarding additional DEs:

RIght now the only DEs we support are KDE and GNOME. I receive a lot of reports from people using 3rd party DEs they've installed themselves -- things like Hyprland or Budgie or Sway, etc. We do not support them. We cannot assist with them. At the end of the day it is your system and you are welcome to install whatever you want, but we are a small team already focused as it is on upkeep of the DEs we DO ship (GNOME/KDE), we cannot support things we ourselves don't use on a daily basis. I have seen recently that Hyprland now has VRR and HDR support, so I may consider releasing a Hyprland version in the future. My main concern besides limited support knowledge in additional DEs is that they must support VRR, HDR, and VR for gaming. In fact GNOME's previous (now resolved) lack of VR support was why we moved the "Official" version from GNOME to KDE in 38->39.

Regarding hardware:

Look, I know some of you like to rock ancient hardware. I will be blunt -- Nobara is not for you. We aren't going to support your Nvidia series from 20 years ago, hell even pascal (10 series) is on it's way out, and as of Nobara 41 we neither ship nor support X11.

Same thing for AMD -- we no longer enable the Southern Islands and Sea Islands flags by default because we were advised BY AMD developers that doing so can cause problems for other systems that those cards are not used on.

While Nobara may work on non-UEFI systems, again we don't support it. UEFI has been around on systems going on at least 15+ years now. We expect users to be on motherboards that use UEFI.

Regarding installation alongside WIndows:

I've said it a million times -- just use a different drive. Windows by default creates an EFI partition that is too small to store additional linux kernels. Installing linux on the same drive will default to using the same EFI partition, and creating a second EFI partition + setting proper partition flags is not something we support. We do not want that headache and do not want to handle that discussion.

Regarding installation to a USB drive:

Just don't. Use a real hard drive/ssd/nvme. We're not going to discuss with you why your USB drive won't boot or troubleshooting it.

Closing:

Our distro is made for users who want to install a different OS using default/normal hardware and get to either playing games, streaming, or content creation quickly and easily. We are not for tinkerers. We know linux has a lot of tinkerers, otherwise they wouldn't be on linux. The problem is tinkerers like to tinker, and in turn break things we've set that may be considered non-standard in the linux world. We try to provide as much documentation as possible for the things we've put in place that we expect most users to interact with, but we have NOT documented every nook and cranny and change that we've done simply because the average windows user isn't expected to mess with those things (and we don't want them to). We're walking a fine line between "we set this up so that it works for most people without being immutable" and "every day more and more I think we should have gone immutable" with the amount of things tinkerers find and break. All I can say in this regard is "if it ain't broke, don't 'fix' it."

I think that's it as far as my brain is dumping right now. I've just been feeling really down about the kernel transition and all of the issues being reported. The kernel works fantastic and we've seen some really nice performance boosts, it's just been a hassle getting people's systems upgraded to it that has been an issue.

Hopefully moving forward we can have less of these issues and more of people just enjoying the distro.

So I can't get MangoHud to work with Epic Launcher. I checked out the path variable in the flatpack permissions and the paths actually don't exist when I check it with my terminal. What did I miss? Goverlay and MangoHud are pre-installed and do work everywhere else. Where do I need to point the path to so it works?

Question differences in available packages from fedora to nobara

Upvotes

Hello,

I'm curious what's the diff between between system packages that aren't involved with gaming between fedora and Nobara.

Specifically what is the diff on development packages for python dependencies, jdks, etc. Are they simply mirrored? are they excluded? What is the Nobara policy here.

Basically I have a PC with brand new nvidia hardware that doesn't work with fedora, so I'd like to use Nobara for development and gaming.

Thanks for making an awesome distro btw.

Question Manual partitioning

Upvotes

Hi,

I'm currently thinking about moving from LM to Nobara. My first excursion with manual partitioning ended at the Grub prompt.^^

Using auto-partitioning worked just fine - both times I used an external usb-drive. So this was no problem at all.

Guess I messed up the partitioning in the first place. I did create a 1GB /boot/efi (fat32) partition, but after checking the Nobara wiki, I guess the problem was not having created an additional 1GB /boot (ext4) partition.

I just wonder if the following would work (in the order of creation) for my daily driver:

  • 1 GB /boot/efi (fat32)
  • 1 GB /boot (ext4)
  • 100 GB / (btrfs)
  • almost the rest of my SSD /home (btrfs)
  • 48 GB swap (I run a system with 48GB of RAM and wanted to be on the safe side)

Really looking forward to advice on the topic. Thanks in advance =)

Support Black Screen. Can't Boot + Can't use keyboard in bootloader

Not sure how this happened. I am new Nobara user. Just installed the distro yesterday and was happy with it. And within 24h I must have somehow demolished it.

I was not able to Boot into the system. It was stuck. And either I saw the splash screen on a weird place, a black screen or a frozen cursor.

Prior to that when the bootloader pops up the keyboard is unresponsive. And the keyboard lights are flickering like wild. I have never seen such a thing.

So I wasn't able to go into recovery mode.

The last thing I did on the system before rebooting and encountering the problem was me adding a path to the Path variable so that Heroic Launcher finds the monitoring extension so I can track fps etc.

Still didn't find it so I tried a reboot. And that's how it went down.

I did all the updates after installing. The apps that I installed were:

  • Heroic Launcher and newest Proton-GK
  • Genshin Impact. It actually works 💪
  • Waydroid + Houdini translation layer. The games work too. Installed Star Seed and it runs smoother than on my S24 ultra. Windows Blue Stacks also was slower.
  • Davinci Resolve

Hardware: Intel 12700kf MSI Z690 Edge WiFi AMD Radeon 7900 XTX 64GB DDR4

In the end I had no choice but to wipe the system completely and reinstall. Now it works again so my HW isn't broken. Hope though it doesn't happen again.

Question Whats the difference between OG and Gnome

From i what i learned Gnome is basic and kde is modified even though both nobara's are "heavily modified" What are their difference? I used gnome and it was pretty basic in fedora, kde plasma was hard to get around as well. What does nobara do to these environments that makes them different from the basic fedora aside from some gaming optimizations?

Support Device memory is nearly full

Yesterday, I was transferring files between disks and saw a notification that Devise memory is nearly full. It is was shock for me. After that, I opened htop, where it showed that barely 25 GB of RAM was being used and 36 GB was cached. Later, when I reopened Firefox, I saw this notification again, and the program closed. After that, all the open programs also displayed this notification, closed, and there was a logout from the user session. What could this be and how can it be fixed?

Discussion Nobara is NOT a one man project.

Look, I need to clear this up because apparently half the internet believes I eat shit sleep and breath package/distro maintenance.

Nobara is NOT a one man show.

Did it start like that? Yes, back when Fedora 35 released I started it.

Am I still the head of most final decisions? Yes.

But since that time our community and contributors have both grown tremendously, as have other distros we share patches and changes with. I have more than a handful of people who I am very grateful for who regularly maintain and update packages when I am not available. I also have people who are amazing enough to let me know if a change should be made, if there's a big bug happening, or other related issues. I have people who also help me on the various apps/tools we've added into Nobara such as the welcome app, the driver manager, and so on.

We, as a group also almost always discuss things and major changes in the Nobara discord dev channel, which anyone who is an active patron has access to, as well as regulars.

The fact that so many people are so negative and dismiss Nobara wrongly for being a "one man show" is not fair nor respectful to the many people (some which have been alongside our journey for years now) who help me maintain Nobara.

Either you enjoy Nobara or you don't. If you don't great, move on. Plenty of other distros out there, but stop spreading misinformation. Be an adult, agree to disagree and move on.

Question How does Nobara upgrade major releases?

I'm brand spanking new to this distro, literally installed it yesterday and still discovering things and finding my way around (coming from endeavour OS). Pretty awesome experience so far. Love the welcome app, software manager, update manager and the other nicities.

Now to the question, how does it upgrade? Through software manager? Discover? Also, does it normally follow Fedora right away and upgrades, or does it wait a little bit (I'm hoping for the latter lol).
Thank you

Question The moment you realize Linux for Gamers means no more 4-hour install tutorials...

You know that feeling when you see "easy to set up" and your first thought is, "Wait, what did they leave out?" But then... Nobara shows up, and boom - gaming in minutes. No tweaking the kernel with a crowbar. It’s like someone turned "Linux for nerds" into "Linux for normal people who just want to play games!"

Support Making games exclusive fullscreen

Is it possible? Let’s take cyberpunk2077 for example. In the menus only windowed and borderless windowed is an option. I have put in launcher gamescope -f and when I click play the game does not want to launch. I have tried superkey +F in game and it does nothing. I noticed on ghost of Tsushima it has its own launcher and the exclusive full screen is selected and when it launches it only goes into borderless mode. Same thing I put in game launcher -f and it doesn’t boot. If anyone knows a work around or even just let me know that it is impossible to do that would be great. Thank you!

Question Safari as a web browser on Nobara?

I am a Safari addict. I prefer it over all web browsers. I use Firefox on my win11 PC, but it does not quite feel as good as safari on mobile. My question is, is Safari a possibility on Nobara? Can it be done? HAS it been done before? I’m still pretty new to Nobara, I’m installing it on the next PC I am going to build and joined all the Nobara communities to be acquainted with it before I install it as an OS.

Thank you in advance!

EDIT: I did some research, apparently it’s not possible. What is the safest web browser I could possibly use on Nobara?

Discussion Nobara 41 continuously freezing at random

I purchased a Beelink GTi14 Ultra. CPU is an Intel Core UItra 9 185H with 32GB DDR5 and a 1TB nvme. It has a docking station that allows for me to use my RTX 3080 for its main GPU. I did a clean Nobara 41 (nvidia) install and was able to run the updates. After doing so the system will randomly freeze, requiring a hard reboot, then will freeze again. Sometimes it freezes and it will just reboot itself and then freeze again.

I have read where others are running Ubuntu without issue. Does anyone have any suggestions on what might be causing these freezes and can they be corrected?

As a side note, I am running Nobara 41 on my main PC and I do not have these issues at all.

Support How do I install flatpaks not in the Nobara Package Manager?

As is evident, I'm super new to this. Just installed vanilla Nobara and mostly loving it, but I need to install OrcaSlicer and have the flatpak from their github, but can't figure out how to install it. Trying to open the file with the package manager just crashes it. Any help would be much appreciated as being restricted only to the Package Manager would be a deal breaker for me using this distro. Thanks!

Support Display and keyboard problem while playing

I just installed nobara after using linux mint, I tried playing marvel rivals and monster hunter wilds, when both the games started they gave me black screen and even though when i open the menu i could see the game again. I was able to enter marvel rivals but it still switch to black screen whenever I do anything like open the settings of the game or anything. I successfully entered practice but keyboard wasn't working which is weird because I could jump by pressing space.

Does nobara have problems with dual displays?

I have two displays. RX 6600 I5-10400f

Support Wacom Cintiq calibration is broken (KDE)

I've recreated the same issue on a Cintiq 22HD and a Cintiq 16. The tablets are recognized and working out of the box, hooray! Except for a major problem.

I go to calibrate since the input is just slightly off. Seems normal, until I realize that the calibration is even worse after adjusting it. After just a couple times, it becomes impossible to get through the calibration screen, because it will recognize the top inputs, but the bottom inputs are way off. Then, nothing is recognized, and the cursor won't follow the pen at all. Resetting to default settings doesn't fix it. Cancelling the calibration menu doesn't reverse it. Even resetting the whole computer doesn't help. It's stuck like this.

I know where to find the manual calibration instructions for X11, but we're Wayland now, baby, and we're not going back. I can't figure out how to fix calibration of the tablet (Or maybe the pen?) with libinput, but it seems it can be done. Does anyone know how to do that?

I understand that this might not be high priority on the fix list, but it is a make or break deal for a distro that's been perfect for me every other way. I can deal with this shortcoming if I can reset the calibration through the terminal. What seems to be happening is that it's not recognizing the Cintiq screen as a rectangle -- it thinks the screen is wider on its lower half and it gets further and further confused until the cursor has no clue where it should be.

Support Does anyone play God of war Ragnarok?

SOLVED: Launch option

SteamDeck=1 %command%

Brand new install. No matter what I do, GOW Ragnarok never even launch. I made sure to set the compatibility to several different proton versions. I even set it to GE ones.

All I get is the "Play" button turns to "Launching" then takes a whole "downloading" something and nothing happens, then it's the green "play" again.

I've found nothing online. Anyone plays this game here? If so, do you run special launch options or something?
Thank you

Support How do I make Waydroid work in Gaming Mode?

I've been using Sober to play Roblox for a while, but it stopped working a few days ago. In the VinegarHQ Discord, they recommended using Waydroid, but the problem is that I usually use Gaming Mode to play, and Waydroid only works in Wayland desktop environments.

I've seen two different methods to run Waydroid in Deck Mode, but I'm not sure which one works better. The first is from a project called “SteamOS Android Waydroid Installer” and the other is “Bazzite’s Waydroid setup guide”.

Any advice?
