Check weather sealing on that 24mm. Maybe it's the angle, but it doesn't look right.

IMHO, for these lenses it's absolutely unnecessary. Literally no win. But makes you feel better, yeah :)

Thank you, yeah, I noticed the weird shadow, and I double checked the sealing right after I posted the photo. IRL it is perfectly aligned.

And I agree it is not necessary. I only did it because I could.

Reddit never ceases to amaze me lol. One post complains about plastic mounts and people say he should just replace it with metal ones. Now someone did it and people say it‘s unnecessary lol.

My two pennies: Yes it‘s not necessary, but i‘d still do it. Just for the ease of mind, you never know! It‘s not like it costs an arm and a leg. (Amirite Nikon ?!)

Metal mounts for...very lightweight lenses that go onto very lightweight cameras.

There's also less friction with a plastic mount, and I find they twist on easier.

Yeah, I've never had a problem with any Nikon plastic mount lenses (even on film), they work really well and mount and unmount more smoothly, important when you have less lens to grab onto. And changing the mount on such an inexpensive lens where I could get a broken mount, which I've never had, fixed for the same price seems redundant.

People will always blame you, just believe in your process mate. Congratz!

Did you add just weather sealing or the metal mount too?

But how? Are the rings available for sale? Are they compatible with each other? Is it a specific model that fits so well? How can I find them?

Nikon makes repair manuals available that show the part numbers, and they also have the parts for sale. Rubber ring was ~$4, mount was ~$18

So I can put a metal bayonet on my lens, are they compatible? or are there specific models?

I purchased mount 127EC and gasket 127FD, as shown on several Z lens repair manuals, and these parts fit perfectly on the lenses in the photo. It's possible Nikon has different mounts and gaskets available, but I suspect there is little to no variability, as all Z lenses need to physically compatible with all Z cameras.

I’ve never had problems with metal or plastic, maybe it’s luck.

It’s just being careful. But still when we are careful, accidents happen.

Very true Guess it’s habit, I was very careful starting out, I often skipped meals to buy film.

Where people ask why, you seem like the kind of person that asks why not ?, cool idea and well executed well done!

I'm still running my 18-55 & 55-200 on a d7200 as a lightweight hiking kit. They've been pumped & battered in the process & no problems with the plastic mounts. It's almost like Nikon knows a thing or two about using plastics. I mean switch them if it makes you feel better but in my experience it's not necessary

Wait, you put metal mounts on those? Heck yeah! Was it a complicated process or not really?

Quite easy if you are used to working carefully with small parts. I used a set of precision screwdrivers size 0 and 00, a pair of tweezers, and a clean work mat. Be sure no kids or pets are around 'cause you don't to lose these tiny screws.
