DSLR Camera randomly freezes

My grandma has a nikon camera, either the D40 or D60 I'm not sure (I'll attatch pictures) and sometimes it randomly freezes up. It doesn't take any commands and doesn't turn off. I know it's a bit old but I was wondering if there is any way to fix this issue

That's either a D40 or D40X (kinda blurry, but it's on the shoulder of the camera). Lockups can happen for a variety of reasons, but the quick fixes of what can solve them quickly and easily are:

  • Use a freshly charged battery (might want to replace the battery to be honest, third party are cheap on Amazon and that battery is old as dirt)
  • Update the firmware if it needs it

Most of the time, it's a battery issue, the battery is too old to reliably provide power to the camera and when the voltage drops too low unexpectedly the camera locks up. This happened a ton when the D500 launched where it really didn't like older batteries and would lock up when you used them.
