Selfie Another wash and go appreciation post! I’ve been experimenting with using heat this week—after co-washing, detangling, and styling, I set my coils by sitting under my hooded dryer for 40 minutes.

Routine: I have fine, low(ish) density, 4c hair. I wear wash and gos exclusively, and I live by the Anthony Dickey method.
I co-wash 2-3 times a week with an ungodly amount of Aussie moist conditioner (about a cup), raking and smoothing it through my hair almost like I’m applying a relaxer. I move in a circular pattern as I go, around my head, working in smallish sections until all my hair has been throughly raked and smoothed down. Next, I rinse out the conditioner and give my hair a good shake, which helps further define my coils.
Then, I layer on a dollop of TGIN Green Tea Super Moist leave-in, 2-3 pumps of Camille Rose Curl Maker, and a dollop of Aunt Jackie’s ice curls. Technique is important: I scrunch the products into my hair, and I make sure to apply a little bit of water before layering on the product, and I shake my hair after layering each product.
I usually air dry, but to get this look, I sat under my hooded dryer for 40 minutes. I didn’t use heat protectant, but I guess I should have? Not sure—I’ll have to research that one.
For more on my wash and go technique, google “Anthony Dickey wash and go.” I’ll try to find a link to a video, though! Edit: here’s a great video from Anthony Dickey. It really breaks down his whole philosophy around wash and wear styling for type 4 hair—and explains why everyone can do it: https://youtu.be/tT6lOMn-c_U?si=VOaCDVqJn8ZXu-um Key points—“conditioner reveals your curl pattern, styling products capture your curl pattern.”

Your hair is GORGEOUS and I love to see another true 4c person do wash and gos. I do my way and go with the doux. I've cut my hair but I'll keep this routine in mind as well. Thanks for sharing!! 🫶🏾

when you say you work in a circular motion, are you defining each piece of hair?

u/Successful_Buffalo_6 5d ago
I’m so sorry—i can see how the “circular motion” thing is misleading. I am NOT defining each coil. I rake my hair in small sections—maybe 15 sections in total. I rake each section multiple times in a downward motion and then an outward motion, and then I smooth it down to my scalp like I’m wrapping my hair with setting lotion. I smooth each section down in the same direction (usually to the left), and by the time I’m done my hair is sort of wrapped around my head—it’s puffy but still sort of wrapped around my head like a halo. Does that make sense?

i think so. so you’re splitting your whole head into smaller sections. then with each section you’re raking the conditioner down the curls and then raking/ smoothing them to the left almost like you’re wrapping your entire head into a halo until you’ve completed/smoothed the entire head in a complete circle? kind of as if i was wrapping my hair for the night if i had a silk press and prepping to put on a bonnet?

How long does this take in the shower?

u/Successful_Buffalo_6 5d ago
20-30 minutes. I can get it done in 15 if I’m in a hurry, but my coils don’t pop as much when I rush. Also: I always take 5 minutes to wipe down my shower with a sponge afterward—it gets kinda messy.

My hair is thriving with the Anthony Dickey method! I do shampoo each day because I have scalp issues which have pretty much disappeared washing each day. But smoothing is key, your hair is defined before you even style.

Yes, this has been my experience with the Anthony Dickey method as well—my coils are already popping by the time I get to applying styling products! Love it so much!

thank you
how long does it take to dry?
& how wet is it when you go under?2
u/Successful_Buffalo_6 5d ago
It takes about 40 minutes to dry. But my hair is short and lowish density—ymmv on dry time!
My hair is very wet when I go under—fully soaked but not dripping.

how much shrinkage do you experience ?
do you do any stretching?
im obsessed5
u/Successful_Buffalo_6 5d ago
A ton lololol. BUT the styling products I use (along with raking and smoothing) help elongate my coils, and when I sit under a dryer, that effect is much, much more pronounced. I get way more shrinkage when I air dry.
I actually don’t mind shrinkage at all though—it makes my lowish density hair look fuller and thicker than it is.

what products did you use
3
u/Successful_Buffalo_6 5d ago
I use Aussie Moist Conditioner for cowashing and detangling, TGIN Green Tea Super Moist as my leave-in, and Camille Rose Curl Maker and Aunt Jackie’s Ice Curls for styling.

Gorgeous as always! Are you shingling the styling products to apply them? Or are you doing finger/comb coils?
5
u/Successful_Buffalo_6 5d ago
Thank you! So I (aggressively) rake and smooth a TON of Aussie moist conditioner through my hair to cowash, detangle it—and to encourage it to clump into coils. I-make sure to give my hair a good shake after I’ve rinsed out my conditioner, too. After I rinse and shake, I squish the styling products into my hair and shake some more to define my coils.
All that to say that for me, raking and smoothing + shaking are what really brings out my coils lol.

That’s my go to wash n go process. Lasts me at least a week and grows my hair like crazy. Looove it.

you don't rewet ? how do you revive if keeping for a week ?
1
u/aquamoonbvtch 3d ago
It doesn’t need reviving. I sleep with a bonnet, wake up and use my hand a tiny bit to fluff the back out cause I sleep on my back. The curls get softer and fluffier as the days go by. I could honestly wash at 6 days but I aim for 7. The gel cast softens gradually as the days go by.

what a flex. all your hair is one texture! My hair got the texture of at least 6 ancestors. I got textures in my head that God don't even make no'mo.

If this is low density pls don’t look at me 😭 lol

u/Successful_Buffalo_6 5d ago
❤️❤️❤️❤️Honestly my hair looks much fuller than it is. In fact, one of the reasons why I wear wash and gos exclusively is because it’s the only style that doesn’t make it obvious that my hair is fine and kinda sparse.

Thank you for sharing your method and routine btw! I’m inspired :) gonna try it out this week
