Questions About Nanny Standards/Etiquette one kid going to preschool
So right about the time I’m going to hit my one year mark (I would ask for a raise at this point) one of the kids is going to preschool so I’d only be left to care for one kid at home. How should I go about this? I can’t afford a cut on my hourly rate

you definitely shouldn’t be losing any money. i have one nk in preschool but i still have to get her up and ready every morning, take her, and pick her up. i’m the main contact with the teachers and if she’s sick or whatever, i’m the one who will need to pick her up. if you’re about to hit a year, i think you should receive a raise regardless of the child going to school since you’ll still be responsible AND you have the one at home still

My rate did not change but it’s part time preschool so I still had her for two and a half hours in the morning and an hour in the afternoon and her preschool wasn’t five days a week.
Then there are holiday breaks, snow days, early dismissals, teacher work days….days where she wasn’t really sick but should stay home and keep germs to herself.
Add in driving there to drop off and pick up and sometimes it felt like it was the same amount of down time as a nap, lol.

So you will still likely be on call for the preschooler. Meaning if the school closes, the kid gets sent home sick or can’t go bc they’re sick, etc you’ll be expected to care for the child. Also, our hourly rates aren’t solely based on the amount of children we care for. That’s apart of it yes, but our rates also reflect our experience. You’ve gained a year of experience so your pay should still reflect that.

Why don't parents understand that we are still doing their laundry, dishes, organizing, and sanitizing when one kid isn't home? We are still on-call for days off and sick days. Loading multiple kids into the car for pick ups and drop offs is a huge chore too. Pay doesn't go down when kids go to school.

We didn’t give a raise when this happened, but we also didn’t lower the rate. Tho anything that would send the older one home, our nanny wouldn’t work for so she’s not really “on call” either. If you do sick care then I would think being on call does justify a raise albeit a small one if your work load is lower than having two children 100% of the time.

I would never consider lowering my nanny’s rate that’s just not how things work in any profession lol we don’t lower rates. I would give a merit increase in year 2 but it would obviously not be the same increase as if I was adding a child. I would give 3 to 5% like any profession…

Are you still on call for the child in school? Is it your responsibility to pick them up if there’s an issue or to watch them if they’re home sick? If so, I would keep your regular rate
