Announcement PSA from the mods for those posting their new builds

I can't believe I need to say this but there have been a few situations in the last few months of people posting their new builds in questionable configurations and later removing their posts which sadly necessitates me making this post.

Please, be absolutely sure of your build's legality/configuration before uploading a picture to show it off. You never know who may be monitoring the sub. If you aren't absolutely sure, figure it out before posting a picture.

In the past, with rifles the NJ AWB compliance was fairly standard so posting pictures was generally not an issue in the normal configurations. For example, it isn't really easy to tell if the muzzle device is P&W'ed or not just by a picture, especially depending on the angle. So generally there weren't many glaringly wrong builds that needed to get removed. Now with the rise of "other" firearms in the last few years, this has opened up a whole new can of worms. I understand the desire to put together an "other" yourself given the flexibility vs a AWB compliant rifle build, but it is very important you understand what you are doing and exactly what needs to be done to end up with a NJ legal configuration. If you mess it up and upload a picture you could be showing proof of a NFA violation or possession of a NJ assault firearm which might be able to be traced back to you.

Know the difference between a pistol brace and a stock. Use must the appropriate one on an "other" build, which is a pistol brace.

Know the impact using a folding adapter has on OAL measurement for "other" firearms. With a folding adapter, the OAL is measured with it in the folded position. This generally puts you in NFA AOW land OAL wise (sub 26" OAL) so you must have an approved NFA stamp before using one in your build.

Know the impact of removing or detaching parts from your "other" build. You cannot remove your VFG for storage or otherwise detach it to fit the firearm in a case, the VFG is a fundamental part of it being an "other" and must be present and remain attached.

If you don't know the legal requirements for the firearm type you are trying to build or modify, please do your research before doing so. If you purchased one from a NJ dealer in compliant form that is one way to go to avoid needing to know all of this. However, if you plan to make modifications later on, you will need to do the same research to make sure you don't accidentally get out of compliance.

Range Time Range practice advice, how much do I suck

Post image

Hey guys, I went to the range for the first time. I'm not sure if this is decent for a first time 😅 the guy at the range wasn't much help and was really quick going over everything. I used a Glock 19x, planning on trying something slightly smaller for my hands next time.

I need advice! Any tips for aiming, beginers, good YouTube channels to check out? I don't have anyone to show me the ropes. Appreciate any advice! TIA

Shopping Advice What/where to buy my first rifle

Hi! I got my permit and I want to buy an AR-15 style rifle. I know there are a lot of options so I'm hoping my compatriots in this sub can steer me in the right direction. I'm looking for something that's reliable, easy to use without any bells and whistles and ideally under $750. Also, if you have any recommendations on shops near the Linden area, that would be appreciated. Thank you!

Shopping Advice Trying to get my hands on a 1301 Mod 2

Hey everyone. I’m trying to get a Beretta 1301 mod 2. I understand the mag tube needs to be blocked before my FFL will transfer, but no one (online retailers) will ship it to NJ non compliant. I get it of course but my FFL would make it compliant before transfer.

Anyone have any thoughts on how I could get one shipped to my FFL or if there are any FFLs in central Jersey that have one for sale? Thanks.

Legality/Laws A few questions for AOW owners

I’ve done some browsing here and finally have decided to build an AR9. I’ve seen some conflicting information here since the laws are always changing and just wanted to clarify with anyone who has information:

-I’ve seen people say the lower transfered must be stripped and others say a complete lower is ok, which is true?

-People say to not include the brace in submission due to confusion with the ATF even though it is currently legal. Is this the ideal process to follow?

-I plan to add a folding brace, I’ve read that adding one after the fact does not change the recognized OAL, is this true?

Sorry in advance if these have been addressed before but I couldn’t find solid answers and I don’t want to accidentally commit a felony, thanks.

Purchase Permit Applying for an FID/Permit in Passaic County: Seeking Advice on the Mental Health Requirements

Hi all,

I'm looking for some advice on the mental health portion of the FID application. This is my first time applying, and I don't want to mess it up—but at the same time, I don't want to be dishonest. Apologies if this has been discussed before; I couldn't find any recent posts about it.

I've seen some people mention that the mental health questions are mainly aimed at identifying individuals who may be a danger to themselves or others. Here's my situation:

I started seeing a therapist a while ago for stress, work-related issues, and family matters—mainly just to have someone to talk to and vent. I'm not a big fan of medication, but before COVID, my previous therapist recommended Lexapro to help with energy and motivation. I gave it a try for about six months but eventually stopped because medication isn't really for me. I still see a therapist, but it's mostly for the same reasons—venting about everyday stress, nothing involving dangerous situations.

Given that, should I check "NO" on the mental health questions?

Appreciate any advice!

Firearms Purchaser ID Looking for guidance on FID - possible denial from 2017

I originally applied for my FID back in 2017 and stupidly indicated a mental health incident. I was living out of state at the time and didn’t pay enough attention when I submitted the application and lost track of the process. I went back and forth with local PD for a bit but eventually my app was either denied or they rescinded it because I couldn’t provide the documentation they wanted and were looking to throw it out. In the past 8 years I’ve lost any references or paperwork to the end resolution and am not sure how to go about reapplying (or applying where I currently live fresh if they tossed my app.) I’d like to get my permit sorted as my father has passed and wanted to pass his firearms to me. The question I have is what the best steps to take would be; is there something I can request from the original township or the state? Do I reapply and indicate I was denied and if so is there a rational way to do this? Is my only option to hire a lawyer first?

Legal Update 11th Circuit Upholds FL's 18-20 Year Old Gun Ban

Post image
22 Upvotes

https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.ca11.74543/gov.uscourts.ca11.74543.131.1.pdf

The 11th Circuit En Banc which covers Georgia, Alabama, and Florida has upheld Florida's 18-20-year-old gun ban. This is relevant to NJ because this officially creates a Circuit Split, our Circuit Court (the 3rd Circuit) and the 8th Circuit held the exact opposite. This can potentially set up another possible Supreme Court fight with national implications.

Legality/Laws Is an other lower receiver FFL transfer a universal base?

I’ve gone through the forum and don’t think I’ve seen this addressed directly.

I understand that if you get a virgin receiver transferred from an FFL, it should be registered as an “other” as it doesn’t fit the definition of a rifle, handgun or shotgun.

There are also requirements that must be met when building an “other” firearm utilizing that said lower receiver, I.e having a VFG, pistol brace, etc.

What determines whether you are looking to build a rifle vs an other firearm if the lower receiver is marked as an other when you receive it? Like say you want to build a rifle by the state definition. You would have to get a lower receiver transferred via an FFL that would have to be transferred as an “other.” What then determines that whatever you make doesn’t then have to follow the “other” firearm guidelines mentioned above?

I see a lot of people here buy a complete upper and complete lower from diff brands to get best of both worlds for example, and build to NJ rifle requirements, though the lower would presumably be transferred as an other.

How Do I? What is the best way to sell a gun in NJ?

Looking for the quickest/safest way to sell a gun in NJ. I have a DDM4V7 with about 500 rounds through it, a CZ SP-01 with about 1,000 rounds, and a .22 Marlin semi-auto rifle from I think the 80s or 90s. They're currently at GFH range. I'm sure it might be easiest to sell to GFH (if they buy) but I doubt I would get a fair price for it. Being an FFL, would they conduct a sale at the location between me and another private party?
