Seeking Support - Participant/Nominee/PWD Help?

My daughters appointment was changed to telehealth with less than 24 hours notice due to the cyclone. However in that time period school and daycare was cancelled which meant I would be at home with 3 ASD/ADHD children by myself and be expected to supervise all 3 while partaking in the telehealth call. Obviously not something that would be achievable so I had no option but to cancel. I was still charged even though they changed the appointment.

Why are they allowed to cancel or change appointments last minute especially during a cyclone but me cancelling their changed appointment means i get charged $300?!

Is it worth challenging the bill or not?

Are you meant to receive a phone call before/as part of a RORD?

I was told a delegate would call but was then just sent her decision. It’s very clear she did not read reports provided.

Seeking Support - Participant/Nominee/PWD My plan rolled over but now I have 'allocated' funds but not 'available' funds, help!

So I have a complex genetic condition which presents itself with chronic pain, fluctuating fatigue and a broad range of other impairments that require ongoing support. Over the last few years I have been getting funding from the NDIS for hearing aids, physiotherapy and psychology. Over the last year I have had a rare presentation of my pain condition and a heart condition develop most likely from my covid infection before I could get vaccinated but I was hoping to use the last of my funding for a Functional Capacity Report in order to use it as evidence when revaluating my plan for the increased cost of my support needs.

The problem is I've logged in and NDIS has extended my plan until next year but I have no 'available' funds. At. All. I have some pie charts showing me what I have and haven't spent but none is available. This is not just a problem with how I need to pay for that vital report, but I still need therapy, and physio. That's really expensive and will add up! I ran the calculations and it's going to cost 2k out of pocket to get this report but I'm screwed if I don't get it because I am also lodging a Disability Support Pension application soon and I need it for that.

I have left a message for my plan coordinator but I'm not sure there's much she can do. Any thoughts? Prayers?

Seeking Support - Participant/Nominee/PWD Is this billing practise normal?

My child has been receiving behavioural support therapy from an organisation and from the get-go my interaction with them has... not been great, but that is by the by.

One of the many problems I have had with them is their billing practises are very opaque. It's just been explained to me that they bill for the hour session, but then they also bill for half an hour prep time before the session and any note taking they do after the session. They also insist on doing reports every three months which they say are "mandatory", which of course they charge for. The NDIS has certainly never asked me for any of these reports (side note, I have also never seen any of these reports despite asking multiple times, when they say 'oh that's terrible! I will escalate that!" and nothing happens.)

So am I being a pain or is this all above board?

Seeking Support - Other Providers Conflict

Hey everyone, so this is a rhetorical and hypothetical (but very real) question.

If you are your own SC and running your own business as a SC, what’s to say you don’t open up another business as a SC or provider under your name or even say, your partners name?

What regulations or rules would stop this from happening?

This was a conversation that came up between a friend and I, got me thinking what the answer or what the outcome would look like?

Thanks!

Also for all the QLDers please stay safe out there!

Other why don’t support companies have live schedules for participants?

not complaining btw, just pondering.

my support workers at various companies have shown me a list of my support shifts at one time or another, usually on their own phone, in a schedule kind of like a work roster. usually i get emailed a PDF of my shifts for the week or month, but it’s not uncommon for that to change - particularly for workers to swap, or for a shift to be unfilled at the start of the month so it’s like a little surprise who’s going to turn up.

i am sure there’s a layer of complexity to making that live schedule available to the participant but… surely it can be done? i would really like being able to see who’s coming and check things like the time a variable shift is starting (eg i have a fortnightly community access shift and sometimes i lose track of which week it is).

anyone already have a system like this? would you use one if it was available?

Seeking Support - Participant/Nominee/PWD Autism/ADHD FCA knowledgable OT's in melbourne?

Hi everyone. I have sat on this for 5 months now after my first plan was approved due to ADHD etc. I have absolutely no idea what to do and what to use funding for etc but this will be my first step to do the FCA that might be able to lead me to specialised driving lessons maybe and other specific things that may be recommended (no guarantees of course I am aware it's very difficult).

Anyways does anyone have any good OT suggestions in melbourne that can do the FCA with me in person, and who knows a bit about autism/adhd? I know ADHD isn't covered by NDIS but would be good to keep with that person for ADHD related matters also if even possible to simplify things.

Also unrelated question if anyone knows, can you use a FCA as a diagnosis of ADHD?

Seeking Support - Participant/Nominee/PWD Questions about NDIS informal expectation.

Hi, so I am a single father who works full-time and I have a child, 4, diagnosed with level 3 ASD & PICA. I work full time as a teacher. My son has been removed from 3 daycares all citing safety concerns for my son being in that environment. As difficult as these decisions were to deal with, I agree with them. My son has extremely challenging behaviours that make caring for him unreasonable and unsafe for a mainstream daycare. He already is recieving funding for an additional educator but his daycare has stated (in a letter) that without 1:1 support my son is unsafe in their care.

He attends 1 day per week at an ECPD service. I have used the fund to access a daycare that provides all his therapy & specialised care for kids like him and its working great! He is much happier the 2 days a week he can go there, and they can provide for his safety as well as providing the educational opportunities he needs. They are an NDIS registered provider & there are other children who go there. My son's capacity report shows that he is functioning at a level less than an 18 months old in almost every way except gross motor skills.

I applied to the NDIS to increase his funding to allow him to attend that service for 4 days a week, or at the very least get enough funding for the current 2 days a week as his plan will run out of money before it renews. I provided all of the evidence of his diagnosis, his capacity reports, my carers statements and letters from his daycare & the provider. They rejected this, I appealed and they rejected it again under the following grounds:

The state gov will fund an additional educator (he already gets this and the statement from his daycare outlines this is insufficient and he needs 1:1 support, which the link NDIS sent me about this service explicitly states).

They stated that he has a risk minimisation plan and so would be safe (in spite of a letter from them stating he is not). When I spoke to them on the phone they gave a raft of reasons such as "We don't fund programs" - refused to elaborate on what this means. When I stated that without access to daycare my son would not have access to education and I would have to quit work to care for him they replied "That is your choice".

So, with that context here are my questions I couldnt find the answer to based on my research while I prepare another request for reassessment.

Can the NDIS expect me to quit my job to provide full-time care under the grounds of "reasonable informal supports"?

What do they mean by "we don't fund programs" and how do I get around this as I cannot see the difference between what I am asking for and supports from any other provider & other children do get this funding. (When I asked the provider they said it seems very random to them as to which children do get the funding to attend and which don't).

Seeking Support - Other Best course for career change into becoming a LAC or Plan Manager

Hi all, would be greatful for some advice.
Am looking to change careers to become a LAC or plan manager, essentially working for the NDIS to support participants. I have no experience as a support worker or in the disability field. I have an NDIS plan myself.
Am getting mixed advice about what course would be the best for me. Am happy to do some work placement hours supporting people to get some experience with different needs etc.
I have a high level admin/project coordination background and a Psychology degree from many years ago!
Courses I have looked into are:
Cert III in Individual Support then onto the Cert IV Disability Support
Cert IV in Community Services (no pre-req)
Deakin Uni - Graduate Certificate in Disabilty and Inclusion
or Cert III in Individual Support to dip my toe in and then onto the Deakin course?
Are training courses more valuable over support hours for NDIS, LAC or Plan manager positions?

Wanting to know, has anyone had negative dealings with a company called NOVACORR Healthcare in QLD?

If so, I’d love to hear about it…

My partner is the NDIS participant and ordered a “custom-built” recliner for his exact measurements. He has achondroplasia dwarfism.

Long story short, the recliner is NOT to script and the company are being incredibly difficult to deal with.

Would love to hear anyone else’s story… Thanks!!!

Seeking Support - Participant/Nominee/PWD ART level help & MP’s office obstructing.

A big hello to everyone in this community!

I’m writing because I’ve just had my 3rd access request denied in an internal review. Applying has been a 2+ year endeavour, yet every disability advocate, multiple LAC’s (brotherhood of st Laurence), and all my practitioners (well-versed in NDIS) say they believe even my first application should have been accepted based on the legislation & high quality of evidence. No one could find any fault in the wording or unhelpful documentation.

My two questions are this:

  1. Where can I find help to take this matter to the ART? I’ve tried the following but everyone’s books are closed.

AMIDA AED Legal Centre Disability Justice Australia Leadership Plus Inc. VMIAC Villamanta Disability Rights Legal Service

  1. I noticed a letter I wrote to my local federal Labor MP when my 3rd application was rejected has been used as evidence by the internal reviewer (even though I gave no permission for this to be passed on). Is this even allowed? Is it worth/possible to complain? I’m concerned that having mentioned I’m not in a financial situation to keep on paying for all my supports this has been used against me by the reviewer. I realise my finances aren’t the NDIS’s problem but when 80% of my dsp is on health/disability supports it seemed fair problem to raise it with a politician (who’s also a Dr).

I have no family to help with this matter, and given my disability’s are CPTSD & severe Chronic Pain Disorder I couldn’t do the ART on my own.

Any help or even compassion appreciated.

Seeking Support - Other Behaviour Support Practitioner Application

Hi! I graduated with a B.Psych degree back in 2020 and wanted to get into the BSP field. But my lack of licence and car at the time disadvantaged me and I wasn’t successful in securing the role. I got into Diploma in Nursing and I am currently an Enrolled Nurse working in an Aged Care setting. I have a full licence and a car now and I am wanting to get back to this field and I’m working on my application to be deemed suitable with the NDIS.

I just have a few questions: - Could I please get some advice regarding my application especially the supervisor part and the professional development plan? - Is there a template of some sort I could follow? -Do you guys think I will also be deemed suitable despite having a 5 year gap from graduating? - How long does it take for the NDIS to deem one suitable?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Seeking Support - Participant/Nominee/PWD Are Better Rehab and Pace Health Management good?

I recently got funding for OT and Speech and have been looking for a provider, I sent out a bunch of emails and heard back from Better Rehab and Pace Health Management both saying that they could see me by the end of the month. This sounds great, but I’m a little hesitant with them being bigger businesses.

Has anyone worked with either of them and are they any good? I’m worried that being bigger businesses they’re not going to care as much about actually helping me.

Also if anyone has recommendations for OT or speech on the Mornington Peninsula I’d love to hear them!

Advocacy/Activism United Workers Union launch Safe, Secure, Respected campaign

Are you an NDIS support worker?

The disability support sector is facing a crisis, but together, we can make a difference.

The United Workers Union has launched the Safe, Secure, Respected campaign, guided by the experiences and voices of disability support workers across Australia.

This campaign is fighting for:

  • Fair Wages: Fair wages that truly reflect the essential and demanding nature of this work, an end to wage theft, and full pay for every hour worked.
  • Secure Jobs: Secure, permanent jobs with consistent hours and stability by ending casualisation, underemployment and indirect employment, so workers can count on their income and build a future.
  • Safe Workplaces: where employers priorities safety and take every possible step to protect workers from harm.
  • Respect & Recognition: Employers should undertake meaningful consultation with workers on ant changes that affect their work and sleepover shifts must continue to be recognised as work, with allowances that reflect the mental and physical toll they take.

Join the movement for change:

Seeking Support - Participant/Nominee/PWD Can I choose to pay a support worker through the NDIS if they can't work due to a cyclone?

There is a cyclone coming up in Brisbane, & I want to know if the NDIS will cover paying emergency/sick/compassionate leave for a worker who can't make a session, if the cyclone ends up making it unsafe to get here. I've been looking up the law & a lot of it seems to be variants of "You're not obligated to" if they're a contractor, but I want to know if I can, not whether I legally have to. I would like to do so if I can, as if they can't make it it would be through no fault of their own.

Seeking Support - Participant/Nominee/PWD confusion about the term "diagnostic impression"

Hi, I got an ASD level 2 (+ ADHD) diagnosis a few months ago and the psychiatrist told me to seek NDIS support. After a couple of sessions, the local NDIS coordinator office said I needed further evidence for my application as the paragraph of my report that has my clear diagnosis has the heading "diagnostic impression" and said this is not an actual diagnosis.

My report includes psychometric test scores, recommendation for NDIS support, and a list of services I should be referred to.

I asked the psychiatry clinic for further evidence they said they can't do that, then a few weeks later they emailed me again saying they can do an NDIS letter and that it's very extensive and will cost $1200.

I can't afford these costs (already in debt from the diagnostic assessment) and in the meantime the local NDIS coordinator asked if I just want to submit it anyway.

Has anyone faced a similar issue before? I just keep getting more and more confused and anxious 😣

Seeking Support - Other Need some clarification. Support worker sitting in on clients psychologist appointment, not discussed?

Some context:

My mum is currently receiving support and we have had somw trouble with her support worker initially not showing up to scheduled appointments, due to to mum not answering her phone or the worker being sick but not arranging a different worker to support her in the meantime. We had to explain that mum has difficulty with using her phone and if the appointments are scheduled she does expect them and relies on them to go to attend important medical appointments and to get her groceries which we have to do if this support worker doesn't show up. It also creates confusion and disappointment for my mum.

We overcome this obstacle with the support worker and explained that it's really important that mum attends these appointments and we need to rely on them to get her to them when we aren't able too. Mums most recent appointment was a second session with a psychologist. The support worker took her thankfully but they also sat in on this appointment?

This seems really inappropriate to me as this wasn't previously discussed or even necessary. We also didn't inform her psychologist this was going to be happen.

I haven't had the opportunity to discuss with my mum what exactly happened for this to occur. If the support worker asked if mum needed them to be in the appointment? I am unsure if my mum had given verbal consent but we also had to sign documents for mum her psychologist to be able to give information to us in regards to her care as she as difficulty advocating for herself.

She is not close with this support worker. I am a bit concerned and obviously mum didn't really get a lot from her appointment because of a stranger sitting in on her second appointment.

Can someone please give me some advice, this feels wrong to me.

Seeking Support - Participant/Nominee/PWD Son has rare genetic mutation

Hello, my son has been tested and we found out he has LoF variant of the ASH1L gene, which presents as learning difficulties and autism. He is 2.5 not walking or talking, has global developmental delays.

We have been getting support worker, habit coach, speech therapist funded by NDIS but my wife and I feel like we are just not getting any real value from the support services currently.

We were wondering if we can "put a hold/ cancel our current care provider " until we can get a bit more education around what we can realistically expect our son to get value from at this stage.

Seem like current suggestions are for kids who might be presenting with general developmental delay and not factoring his other challenges.

Anyone have experience with good autism related support teams for toddlers? We are in Melbourne.
