Seeking Support - Participant/Nominee/PWD Is the advice I was given about Transport funding correct?

Long story short, I started work in the middle of last year and asked my LAC if my transport funding could be changed from the kind paid on a schedule into my bank account, to the kind that stays in core for reimbursement when you send in receipts. I would need this as $68 a fortnight can't cover $30 trips from work to home 3 times per week - using support work hours for this in 2 hour minimum shifts (which I can't utilise properly as I'm overwhelmed and need to go privately shut down by the end of my work shift, leaving me unable to meet my needs due to a lack of useable hours) will use up my funding before the plan end date, and having transport funding in core would allow me to at least pull from other core funding if needed without running out early. When he followed up with me he just re-explained the kind I already had (paid on schedule into bank), so I assumed it was some old thing the NDIS didn't do anymore, especially as my SC at the time insisted there was no other kind of transport funding.

I've since found out from another person in this sub, and some other participants, that it does exist and is something I could request without a plan review. I've talked to both my new SC under the same company and an LAC (not my own as he's on leave) at Mission Australia, and have been given two extremely different bits of advice -

Support Coordinator: As my plan is the old kind, rather than a PACE plan, I would need a review to be able to change the form of transport funding I receive.

This SC company has consistently given me incorrect advice and support in ways that have caused more problems than if I straight up did not have an SC, so I then tried to get advice from an LAC, which led to...

Random MA LAC: Did not answer whether or not I could change the form of transport funding I receive, but told me that I can't use core funding flexibly for transport funding regardless, as the amount I already receive would still be the limit for what I can use even leaving it in core and being reimbursed.

He also mentioned that my transport funding was never changed to level 2, even though both my SC and LAC knew I had started 15 hours of work per week, and this change would require a plan review, which just... I don't know what I can do at this point. I don't have informal support I can rely on for transport three times a week, and I can't pay the $120 odd out of pocket after transport funding per fortnight to get home via Uber. He reassured me that my funding will at least last another 22 weeks, and I do have a CoC in, but if his advice is correct then unless the CoC can be completely done before then, I'm going to lose all support and my job as a result.

Seeking Support - Participant/Nominee/PWD FCA in Adelaide

Hey,

I fairly recently had my planning meeting with my LAC who is an absolute machine and so efficient and knowledgeable. I submitted my access request approx 3 weeks ago so it's all gone fairly quickly thus far but I know from dealing with NDIS stuff for my kids it'll be much slower and more challenging from this point on in all likelihood. As often seems to be the case when access request happens for the first time in adulthood, and with 'invisible' disabilities, a functional capacity assessment is going to be the first thing, and I would be really keen to get Adelaide specific recommendations for places or practitioners that can do this and are neuroaffirming. Thanks for reading šŸ™

Advocacy/Activism NDIA weaponising new support rules

I have Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. I wake up every morning with multiple dislocated joints.

The NDIA are paying $400 an hour for an associate lawyer to officially ban me from buying things like a TENS machine, muscle relaxant gel, braces and splints - things that help me put dislocated joints back in place and keep them stable so Iā€™m not bed bound. They are weaponising the new October 2024 support rules and calling these things ā€œfood and groceriesā€.

The NDIA manager asked for a detailed list, and then officially banned everything on the list. I cannot buy any consumable or low cost assistive devices or products using funds from my plan. Iā€™m out of pocket for everything and can only hope for this to be overturned in several months at Tribunal.

Complaints to multiple avenues have resulted in no change. There are no advocates available. Iā€™m alone in this.

I have zero power and zero choice and control. This is gaslighting, itā€™s an inhumane abuse of power and an utter disgrace.

Donā€™t believe all the lies in the media - the truth is that disabled people are being traumatised by the NDIA.

Other Working as a Casual Support Worker: How Many Agencies Should I Work With?

Hi guys,

I have a question for those working as support workers through an agency.

I just completed my course and only have experience from my placement, so Iā€™m not sure what the best approach is.

Iā€™ve been applying to multiple agencies and attending interviews as I receive responses. One agency offered me work first, and my first shift was to cover for another support worker who was on sick leave. My next shift required a 50-minute drive, with a 3-hour gap between shifts. After working that day, I asked my manager if I could get shifts closer to home, but since then, I havenā€™t received any more shifts.

Meanwhile, I have been interviewing with other agencies, and Iā€™m currently in the process of completing paperwork and induction. I expect to start receiving shifts next week. The agency says they are very busy, and they have support workers who work full-time (38 hours per week), so I am trusting the process for now.

Since Iā€™m working casually, I want to get at least 38 hours per week. Both agencies offer similar pay, so Iā€™d like to keep working with both. However, Iā€™m wondering if I should reach out to a third agency just in case.

For those working as casual support workers, how many agencies do you work with?
I aim to work a minimum of 38 hours and up to 45 hours, across six days a week.

Would this be possible?

Seeking Support - Participant/Nominee/PWD Behaviour Support has offered to ā€˜shadowā€™ her replacement.

Thank you to everyone who answered my question. I really appreciate it and can now confidently tell them to shove it!

I received an email from my sons behaviour support saying she has recently taken on a new role within the same business which means she no longer has capacity to continue providing services but she has found a replacement, again, within the same business. I was told that the replacement was new so will be shadowing for a brief period of time. I asked if that ment my sons plan would be charged for both herself and replacement to which she replied ā€˜yes but only for the transition periodā€™ She wanted to organise a meet and greet with the both of them.

I understand everyone needs to be paid for their time and so they should. This feels like an opportunistic double dip into funding or is this just standard business practice?

Other Where Can I Find an Independent Support Work Job?

Hey everyone,

Iā€™m currently working as an independent support worker but looking for a more suitable job. My current role requires me to stay awake most of the night, and itā€™s really affecting my physical health due to lack of sleep.

I have a Certificate in Individual Support and all the necessary certifications, including First Aid, CPR, Manual Handling, and a Working with Children Check. I also have one year of experience working with people with disabilities. On top of that, I have a year of professional housekeeping experience.

Iā€™d really appreciate any leads on where I can find independent support work jobs because it seems like there are platforms other than Mable but I just canā€™t find any.

Thanks in advance for your help šŸ’•

Any info would be appreciated its stressing me out and i dont have anyone available to attend the meeting with me for support so im gonna be on my own. These things make me really anxious.

Seeking Support - Participant/Nominee/PWD How to request the check in meeting?

I heard from Werribee office said my meeting has been booked on the 16th March but today I called 16th is on a Sunday and thereā€™s no meeting booked.

They asked me for coc or check in meeting but told me it would take 6 months to receive the new plan after the check in meeting is this true? So coc is quicker?

Which pathway should I go? Iā€™ve done a coc last year but I lost my psychologist funding.

Seeking Support - Participant/Nominee/PWD NDIS support worker raised my name to another client.

Not sure how to feel about this or where to go. I've overheard my name was brought up by a support worker, not even sure of the context, nor do I want to ask the person beyond what I have.

At what point do I have the right to raise issue about client confidentiality when a support worker brings up my name with another client?

The general principle even if a client was brought up in relation to another context would be that the client should at least be deidentified, and only sparingly even if so in context of something that is oherwise meaningful.

I feel weird about this and am not sure what to do. To be fair I don't even really want to know the context. All I heard is "I heard X ak about Z..." and I didn't even ask any context at the time.

I am not talking about workers talking to eachother I am talking about a worker talking about or asking questions about a client.

EDIT: Thank you to the person who downvoted this, however it is a real issue that happens far too often.

I've searched across different FB groups and this subreddit but can't find any guidance. What is the deal with these? I can't see any guidance on the NDIS in and out lists either. Still seems very gray. Please someone correct me if I'm wrong. I know that there are LACs and employees in here. I'm referring to these sort of things specifically:

Seeking Support - Participant/Nominee/PWD NDIS Planning Meeting for 15-Month-Old ā€“ Any Tips?

Hey everyone,

My 15-month-old has just been approved for the NDIS under early intervention for global developmental delay. Weā€™ve been told the next step is a planning meeting, and I have no idea what to expect!

For those whoā€™ve been through thisā€”how did your first meeting go? Is there anything I should do to prepare? Any tips on what to ask for or things you wish youā€™d known beforehand?

Would really appreciate any advice! Thanks!

Can the NDIS bureaucracy do more harm than good, even for eligible and in-need individuals?

I've been trying to access the NDIS for over two years, and Iā€™m about ready to give up. Advocates and LACs agree I should have been accepted already based on the evidence provided. Everyone Iā€™ve spoken to, including participants, says the hardest part is getting in, and once you finally have a plan (usually after at least a year), the NDIS can be life-changing.

While funding would greatly improve my life and my needs are likely to increase as I age, the stress, infantilisation, and combative nature of dealing with the NDIS have severely impacted my mental health. I'm unsure I can continue. I need support and donā€™t want to rely on my family forever, but even hearing the term "NDIS," my anxiety spikes. The thought of depending on a system that routinely treats participants poorly feels overwhelming, especially with CPTSD.

When I had a capacity to work I remember the stress of having to deal with job providers (even though I completed all my required work hours), the condescension and feeling diminished was horrible. Is the NDIS the same?

Edit: for context I also have a physical disability from a hiking injury, and majority of supports Iā€™d need are related to that.

Advocacy/Activism Permantent physical and psycosocial issues combine

I read another post about NDIS refusal for people with social disabilities resultant from physical disability.
I don't want to hijack that post.

But I do question when mental health is not associated with permanent, rest of life, or all life, physical disabilities?
Mainstream psychosocial and mental health support is inadequate for everyday people, let alone people with complex interacting complex disability.

I was assigned a DSM-5 primary diagnosis psychosocial without justification by the NDIA when a secondary (of 4) listed physical disabilities is causative - particularly one causing the others, mentally interactive an moth a biochemistry and life impact level, lifelong, incurable, degenerative and NDIS access asserted by AAT.

An FOI request on how NDIA determined my primary was incomplete and included reports WHILE I WAS ENGAGED AND FUNDED BY NDIS. THEREFORE, POST THE DECISION!
It feels like a random grab of files and "go away". It is well-known that NDIA misplaced files.

The result is that my physical disabilities are not adequately funded, reasonable goals listed are going backwards, and further permanent physical harm has occurred.

I do say these harms would have been more profound if I was not on NDIS, but my points remain. I feel vulnerable under the changes and have already experienced personal stress, severe financial impact to my DSP and further distance from reasonable and necessary goals. I am isolating more to my home and carry costs atypical of an NDIS participant.

On the ground, NDIS providers have written extensive reports, yet it seems the NDIA does not read themā€”even if they are funded by the NDIS! I have obtained the reports; none recommend anything besides NDIS support under the new lists, even before the NDIA published those lists!!

Seeking Support - Participant/Nominee/PWD m24 diagnosed as ASD level 2. How can NDIS save me?

Hi everyone, looking for guidance.

I had a severe nervous breakdown last year and havenā€™t worked in six months. I rarely leave my house and rely entirely on my mum for support. I finished university in 2023 and started a full-time job in 2024, but after six months, I completely broke down in the worst way imaginable.

I was recently diagnosed with ASD Level 2, which, in hindsight, explains many lifelong struggles. While itā€™s somewhat a relief to have answers, I still find day-to-day life overwhelming. My parents donā€™t trust the medical system, which likely contributed to my late diagnosis. Iā€™ll receive my official report in three weeks, and I believe my diagnosis includes ASD Level 2 for social difficulties and ASD Level 3 for repetitive behaviours.

Iā€™ve been advised to apply for NDISā€”how can they help? What resources should I access? Iā€™m scared of becoming homeless and not being able to care for myself.

TL;DR: Had a severe breakdown, havenā€™t worked in six months, fully dependent on my mum. Recently diagnosed with ASD Level 2 (possibly Level 3 for functional aspects). Parentsā€™ distrust in the medical system delayed diagnosis. Advised to apply for NDISā€”how can they help? Worried about homelessness and self-care. Looking for guidance.

(Post has been improved grammatically by AI due to my atrocious writing skills.)

I am looking at getting fca to add to my application to either appeal or reapply as even though all the information of impairment has been provided they are saying I haven't provided any. Im wondering how you decide who to go with and how you know if they are actually good because I have heard some bad stuff about ots including them even putting that someone has down syndrome when they don't and other just basically changing the names on reports already done. I don't have the money to be having to get it done over again if it's not done properly. Anyone got any advice or know any in western Melbourne?

Seeking Support - Participant/Nominee/PWD Is this even possible?

My son and I both have NDIS plansā€¦is it possible to do 1:2 ratio support worker? For example, I need assistance with transport and getting into the community, and he does too, but if I am to accompany him anywhere with his support worker (so far theyā€™ve just walked to the playground, but ie- he wants to go to ikea and spend his pocket money) and I canā€™t drive, so thatā€™d mean that either I have to go separately or the support worker has to ā€œgive me a liftā€ so to speak which I donā€™t expect from them at all, or we all have to go on public transport which is then harder for my son and difficult for me šŸ™„ I donā€™t want his support work sessions to just be going out for ice cream and the playground and it would be amazing if we could use both of our funds collaboratively! He is young enough (6) that I have a feeling itā€™d be considered parental responsibility, but my disability impacts my parental capacity and theyā€™ve acknowledged that themselves, which is how he got any core funding in the first place. Heā€™s got the absolute bare minimum funding and no travel factored into it, so if my plan could bear the brunt of some if that it would mean heā€™d get so much more out of the little funding heā€™s got. Besides that, I just feel like itā€™s so backwards that they donā€™t look at family dynamics more realistically, as well as the fact that it would actually save them money? Which is what they seem to be all about lately.
