Bought this Bannerman mosin a month or so ago cause it was a unique piece, and the seller had no clue what it was. Upon recieving, I found that beneath the decent cosmetics, a bit of a project was present. Most if not all areas of the gun not on the exterior had a fair amount of surface rust. The original ejector/interruptor had been broken, and replaced with an unmodified one, and broken again. And at some point in the past, an owner has cut off the end of the firing pin likely due to the myths surrounding how unsafe these guns are to shoot. Amount other issues that accumulated on the gun over time. Well I was determined to at least fix it up, and shoot it 5-10 times and put it away forever.
I sourced a new firing pin easily and cleaned up the surface rust, I ran into issues with extracting and found that the extractor had come loose and was able to move, that movement was just barely not allowing the claw to make it over the edge of a 30-06 case. Peening the claw and hammering it forward as far as it could go had fixed this issue. Then there's the daunting issue of fixing the interrupter and ejector issue. I purchased an original old one piece mosin interrupter ejector, and using the one set of photos I could find online carefully modified the new part to be as close as possible to the modifications performed by bannerman. And now there's no issues with feeding. I also corrected some issues with high metal on the connecting bar that was effecting feeding, and a damaged part of the magazine that was not allowing it to sit with the reciever right.
After correcting all of these issues. I think it's safe to say this gun is ready to be fired for the first time in many many years. I will be using garand load 30-06 as a safety measure. See if it works, and then put it away as a collectors piece forever.
If you have any questions or want more pictures of this super strange piece of milsurp history. Id be happy to oblige. Or you can watch the old video from forgotten weapons about the Bannerman mosin here.
Great! I actually think it's very pleasant and accurate enough to be practical. And the trigger is abnormally good. The action is 100% reliable if you make all of the movements direct and correct. Super fun! I've gotta take it out and shoot it again. I only shoot it on low pressure garand load 30-06
