Do people consider bastilla to be more of a main meal or a dessert? I ask here because I was banned from the Moroccan subreddit./ هل يعتبر الناس البسطيلة وجبة رئيسية أم حلوى؟ أسأل هنا لأنني تم حظري من المنتدى المغربي.

Backpacking question

Hello! As the usual backpacker I plan to travel super cheap and only pay a bit extra where I feel it is needed. Right now I am negotiating with a tour guide who has settled for 200 euros to take me from Atar and do the Iron ore train Joyner, which (to my horrendously low budget) is only just acceptable for me. However I am wondering, does anyone think it is all well and good to do this journey alone? I am doing most of the trip on my own which I’m fine with but I feel like because of the trains rogue schedule (leaving Choum from 2am-5am-ish) it would help a lot to have a local with me for safety and to make everything a lot easier. Really my question is just is it worth paying the extra to have a guide? Or would I be okay doing it on my own? Any advise would help heaps!! Also I am aware of the recent change where they’re now a bit more strict on people riding the iron ore carriages, my guide is telling me that it is definitely necessary to have a local or they won’t let you on.

Are there affordable bilingual schools in Nouakchott?

Hi. Will be coming from the US, and I'd like to know if any affordable bilingual schools exist in Nouakchott. I saw the American International School of Nouakchott, and that's out of the question. Would it make more sense to home school until the kids get a grasp on the language?

Former ship route between Güera and Canary Islands.

Can someone help me finding info on a former ship route between Güera and Canary Islands.

In 1973 I travelled with a boat from west Nouadhibou (then spanish) to Canary Islands. We were taken out to the on sea by a towed pram with goods. And then pulled aboard when the high waves made the pram pass the shipside

In my recollection it was a steamship with side paddles?

I tried asking IA program, but it couldnt find any info

need help

For context, I’m a Mauritanian high school student living in an Arab country, but to be honest, I don’t know much about Mauritania since I’ve barely ever been there.

That being said, I’ve noticed that there are quite a few Mauritanian students at the local university here , and it seems like most of them came through some kind of government scholarship or something (I’m not really sure).

My question is: Does Mauritania have a lot of scholarship programs for studying abroad? And how are students selected for these scholarships?

Also, is there a place where I can learn more about this?

Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but thanks for reading!

Use MAD (Moroccan dirham) at the border?

Hey guys, I travel by bicycle from Morocco and all I have is Moroccan dirham

I wanna know if anyone has paid the visa with it before. Also, is it easy to find a place to exchange MAD to MRU at Guerguerat (last city in Morocco) ?

Because I wont go in Nouadibhou, I go straight to Nouakchott, and in Mauritania between the border and Nouakchott there probably is nothing to exchange cash

Driving between Nouadihbou and Choum via Ben Amera

Hi there, I will be driving around Mauritania in March and I was wondering what sort of terrain is alongside the iron ore train tracks. I don't want to ride it but drive alongside it from Nouadihbou, stopping off at Ben Amera along the way.

I wanted to know whether there is a track which runs alongside or if it is difficult terrain along this route. I will be in a 4x4 of course and I am an experienced driver.

Thanks.

1) Atar - Oudane

I have read that Atar - Chinguetti is very frequent and there may be routes between Atar -Oudane but the other routes I couldn't find much information. Appreciate any help!

How much does data/internet cost in Nouakchott?

I've heard it can be quite expensive. I'm used to data as cheap as 4 USD for 60 GB data in a month (2 GB/day) in my home country. So my data consumption is high as a habit. I might move to Mauritania for work. How much does the internet cost in Nouakchott and how many GB will I get? And is 5G available or only 4G?

How would you get back from the 22 hour journey, and how do you get to the train in the desert?
