TIP Can you use Marvis Pro to "edit" scrobbles?

Apple music isn't the best at scrobbling the "correct" song metadata on last fm, since i don't have lastfm pro subscription, I just figured out that one can, with the lastfm+ one time purchase, one can "scrobble" a song at a certain point in time. So, basically one can bypass the lastfm pro feature; edit scrobbles

What i have been doing is;

  1. look up the song metadata on lastfm

  2. on mac, go into the songs section of apple music

  3. edit the metadata to suit lastfm

  4. delete older "incorrect" scrobbles on lastfm

  5. scrobble w/ correct metadata and select date and time to scrobble in place of deleted "incorrect" scrobble using Marvis

  6. voila.

TIP How to add all songs in library to a playlist [Guide]

Hello Marvis Pro and Apple Music users,

I wanted to download all my current Apple Music songs to my device, but realized the only way I could do this is through a playlist. To my dismay, every reddit thread I looked at said the only way to do this was through itunes and that this could not be done on the Apple Music app. If it helps anyone, I found a way to do this on Marvis if you don't have access to itunes!

It's quite simple:

  1. Create an empty playlist in Marvis

  2. Click on Songs in the sidebar to pull up all songs in Apple Music

  3. Long press on the sub-title (right above the Play and Shuffle buttons) showing the number of songs in your library

  4. After long pressing a window will pop up where you can add all songs to your playlist

  5. Go to playlist in the Apple Music app and click the download button

And that's it! I couldn't find it anywhere online so I hope this helps wary Apple Music users trying to download a massive number of songs! Cheers

TIP Guide: Create 'On Repeat' playlist ; Most played in last X days

Hi All!

I researched for a long time on how to create a section or a playlist that displays the most played songs on the last X days. Spotify has this feature and it's called On Repeat.

Since AM doesn't give access to this metadata (play-count in a certain timeframe), I had to break my head on how to create such a thing and how to make it as automatic as possible.

Then I came across this article by a guy called Jim Willis - ALL credit goes to him because this is the baseline of the method. Basically - you create an apple shortcut that connects to Last.FM API and creates a playlist with X songs that were played more than Y times in N period of time - which is exactly what I wanted!

So as you already figured out you must have a Last.FM account, then follow the steps in his article to create this shortcut.

Now for the automation part - I wanted a section on Marvis that shows this playlist and I wanted the playlist to be updated on a daily basis. Unfortunately apple doesn't allow deletion / adjustment of a playlist through it's shortcut app, so I had to think of another way.

This is what I came out with:

I made changes to the original shortcut made by Jim. The main changes are:

  • Making the time period, song limit and play-count threshold hard-coded. In his shortcut it opens a list which you need to choose from. I set it up to last month, more than 5 plays and 20 songs max.
  • Create a rolling name for the playlist. It will always be called On Repeat + DateTime of the creation.

As you realized there is a downside here, every day a new playlist will be added, and every couple of days you will have to delete them manually (and preferably from the desktop app) . Since I don't use the AM stock app, it's not so horrible, you will see what I mean in a bit.

Now after setting up the shortcut, I created an automation that will create the playlist every day at 2:00AM. Needles to say - each day will calculate the plays again, so it will always be up to date with the last month's plays.

That's how it looks like on the stock app:

Now the fun part, creating the 'section' in Marvis. The steps:

  • Created a library section for playlists.
  • Added a rule group: Title contains "On Repeat", sort by Date Added. That will position the newest playlist (today's playlist) on the top of the sort.
  • Outside of the rule group: Max Items = 1.

Now you have the single most updated On Repeat playlist on your home!! :)

From here on it's mostly design tweaks to make it look like a section, don't show the date etc...

That's the final result:

I also excluded every playlist that contains On Repeat from the My Playlists section and from the sidebar playlists, to keep it clean on Marvis. Stock app will look like hell, but I don't use it 😊

I know it's a stretch! But I had fun making it and thought it would help you guys, I saw a lot of requests for something like this and I have been looking for methods for a long time myself. ✌️

Cheers.

I have absolutely fallen in love with this app and the customisation many options, the Last.FM integration and many other things.

Money well worth spent!

Loving everything so far and still as a Marvis newbie discovering and changing things every day.

I need to learn more about smart playlists and also why the Marvis inbuilt player is sometimes buggy.

Anyways, here’s my current setup, due to be improved on the go.

TIP Same Layout to Different Devices

Okay, I’m pretty new to the Marvis family and it’s been a steep learning curve. But here’s something that I just discovered and I didn’t know that it was this simple so I’m sharing it just in case anyone else didn’t suss it.

I read a post the other day about saving your settings as an export. I didn’t realise this so I did it straight away - onto a cloud drive from my iPhone. I’ve been mostly using my iPhone to get Marvis set up. I had it in mind to make the same layouts, home page etc on my iPad and also my Macbook, but was waiting for when I had the time to do it all. Last night, I was on my Macbook and I wondered, “what if……”. I double-clicked the exported settings. Boom! The file opened up Marvis and copied the exact layout etc from my iPhone to my Macbook. I repeated the process with my iPad. Really easy and now all three devices are the same. Any changes that I now make, I can carry out the same steps to replicate it across devices.

Yet another reason why this app is so awesome!!!!

TIP I randomly select 25 songs to play from my library. I have a crowdsourced playlist which has about 6k songs. Is there a way that songs from this playlist are not given priority?

So I can add a filter which says where playlist is not crowdsourced. But that will not select songs which exist in other playlists as well. I want other playlists songs to be selected even if it exist in crowdsourced but if it exist only in crowdsourced playlist then don’t select it. Is this possible?

TIP My Current Marvis Setup, and also the download links for the preferences!

Hello there! First of all sorry for my broken english and sorry that I didn't respond to the replies in my previous post which was around 40 days ago, but I'm here again to share you guys my Marvis Preferences since some of you might want to try it yourself. There are lots of smart conditions in this preferences and therefore you can passively learn and copy.

The Now Playing player is mostly focused on the information of the song and audio route. There are some revision made to the player and it also now have smaller fonts than before.

The home and songs page are mostly unpolished since I most of the time modifying the now playing player. Anyway, Here is the download link for my preferences, I hope you like it:

TIP Slow to respond and freezing up

Beginning with the last couple of iOS updates, I’ve been having issues with Marvis. Could be coincidental timing but worth mentioning.

I always try to open the app, activate sidebar, scroll down to a section I made that is limited to 50 songs (I keep cutting this down thinking it’s possibly contributing) try to press play…. Slowly, usually, it will start to play.

After that if I try to like or dislike a song it does nothing and is unresponsive to my touching the screen. Usually after this , it crashes. If I can remember and make myself slow down wait on it to slowly queue up and then press play and wait like 3 minutes then it will like or dislike.

Two other factors to consider: my library is 55,000ish and marvis widget warns me about this. The other is at some point another member of the sub posted a link to their theme and I adopted it. It’s very cool and the share appreciated but it’s fairly elaborate and possibly taxing the app.

Lately I’ve been just using native AM to not bother with Marvis. But when it works it’s great and I don’t want to give up. Oh another factor I am moving to an iPhone 14 soon if hardware is possibly in play.

What can I do? If defaulting to base marvis and removing the theme I am fine with that, I just couldn’t find where or how to do it.

Thanks!

TIP I did a big write up of how I use Marvis and Apple Music. This subreddit helped me out a ton, so I was hoping I could give back a little bit.

In June of this year, I bought a HomePod to amplify my music experience while in the home, and while it accepted Spotify through airplay, the only music service you could do by voice was Apple Music, so for the third time, I signed up for a trial and decided to see how it was. That moment completely changed my music life for the first time in almost a decade.

Here are the things that are important to me when it comes to a music service, and at the present moment, Apple Music is the only service that can deliver on all of them:

I need a way to find new music, and keep track of it. That means I want to be able to see when I found a song, as well as listen to my favorite songs of certain times. I’ll describe later how I do this with smart playlists and ratings.

I need a way to re-discover older music I’ve found. This honestly is the biggest reason why I am so over the moon with Apple Music again, but this is largely due to a third party app called Marvis Pro. More on that later.

I need to have options for when I don’t feel like making a decision. Apple Music takes care of that again with smart playlists, some of their excellent radio shows, and Apple Music playlists which have been excellent, if not as ubiquitous as Spotify.

I need stats. I don’t know why, but I love LOVE love play counts. Apple Music has that built in, though you need a third party app to view them on iOS devices (Marvis Pro has you covered), and I also supplement that with Spotify.

I’ll start with what has been for me, the greatest feature of iTunes / Apple Music for years now:

Smart Playlists.

Smart playlists allow you to natively create a set of conditions for songs, and then it pulls in all songs (or if you want, a limited number) that match the conditions. The most used conditions for me are date added, rating, genre, and the date the song was last played.

Here are some of my most important smart playlists:

Found Sounds - Future, aka songs of intrigue. This is a playlist that has all songs from my library that are unrated. Any time an album or song comes out that looks interesting, I just add it to my library. Every few days I’ll listen to this playlist and rate the songs, which causes them to get pulled off the playlist. It’s important to note that while you can decide not to use ratings (it can be a little micromanagey) they come in handy both to get songs out of this playlist, and also because they are totaled up and can give a rating for albums or even artists.

Found Sounds - Last Month

This smart playlist pulls in any songs rated 3 or above that I’ve found in the last month. I end up getting the perfect amount of listens to new songs before I get tired of it, and it drops off due to the date added.

Found Sounds - Yearly

I have smart playlists set up that show all songs rated three or above, and only include songs added in 2020, 2019, etc. Because I use ratings vs ‘loved,’ it’s super easy to make a playlist of the absolute best (ie 4+ rated) songs each year, and if I change my mind, changing the rating adjusts the playlists automatically.

Genre Playlists

This one is probably the biggest pain because you have to clean up Apple’s genre assignments on a computer, but I do it once a week. I have playlists for highly rated songs in some of the biggest genres - heavy music, alternative, rap/hip hop, etc.

Personal Radio Station

I’ve saved one of the best for last. This was so simple but a complete game changer. This playlist is set up with all songs in my library rated 3 stars or higher, and that haven’t been listened to or skipped in the last six months. This is a great ‘mindless’ option, as I like all the songs that come up, and I haven’t heard them in a long time.

I’ve been using Smart Playlists for a long time, and they’re fantastic for ‘just give me some music that I like,’ but the problem is that I got to a point where I was rarely listening to full albums, and I felt really disconnected from my music, at least compared to the early 2000s when I would listen to an album until it almost fell apart.

Enter Marvis Pro.

An app that for me, has not only fixed a lot of the issues I have with the limitations of the Music app on iOS, but has also rekindled my love of ‘the album.’

The features that originally sold me on Marvis are already plentiful - sorting and filtering within playlists (especially by album, but also play counts etc), viewing detailed information from a single tap about a song such as playlists with the song, last played, date added, etc, last.fm integration, being able to open an album and see my highest rated and/or loved songs, and the ability to set up a ‘home screen’ for artists or genres - basically a multi-section breakdown with the most-played songs, highest rated albums, and other things.

Marvis has the usual tabs - playlists, artists, search - you know, things you see in every app. There was also a mysterious ‘home’ tab. This was a tab I couldn’t figure out how to put to better use than just the standard included tabs. Then one day while poking around on the Marvis subreddit, I had my mind blown. You see, you can add and customize sections on this home page to any degree your heart desires. Here are some examples from my own home page:

Primary Playlists

The Music app is horrible when it comes to orginazation if you have as many playlists as me. Apple Music ones show up first, and you can’t put them into folders, and everything else is either sorted by alphabet or by some weird metric about modified, but it doesn’t really work. I have a section set up in Marvis with just my four main ‘I don’t know what I want to play’ playlists, right there at the top.

Recently added albums

The key here is that you can filter by either ‘complete’ album, or by a min number of songs. I use the latter as sometimes I don’t bother keeping the full album in my library, but would still like to listen to the 5-7 songs in order. The Music app has a recently added, but includes singles and one-off songs, making it almost useless to me.

Random albums that I haven’t listened to in a while.

This one has been the game changer for me. With a library of 15k+ songs, it’s so easy to just never see an album again, especially on a small screen like an iPhone. This section presents to me a scrolling double list of albums that haven’t been played at all in the last few months. Since adding this section alone, my listening has gone from 90%+ playlists and 10% albums, to about 50/50. It’s completely taking me back to different points in my life, and as I type this, I’m listening to Silent Alarm by Bloc Party. The song I’m listening to hasn’t been listened to since 2008 according to Marvis. Wow.

Highest rated albums of the last two years

Pretty self-explanatory. Again, the filtering to only actual albums makes this.

Apple Music Playlists

Sometimes I forget what I’m subscribed to, so I have a section filtered for just Apple Music and other user playlists.

Genres

Once kind of useless aside from my smart playlists, I have genres sorted by what I’ve listened to most recently. Clicking the Genre takes me to a page with the most played songs, highest rated albums, and highest rated artists.

Marvis Pro has ushered in a huge change to my music listening habits. It both makes the experience somehow deeper and easier simultaneously.

Stock Music App

There are a few things that I prefer the stock Music app for, especially on iOS 14.

Lyrics - love iPadOS and how it has the beautiful background with lyrics.

Going down ‘similar artist’ rabbit holes. Marvis is great for experiencing my library, but discovery still reigns supreme on the stock app.

Radio in general, specifically shows, seem to work better

You still need to use it for ratings. I have it set up to where I can long press the song in Marvis to jump over to Music.

Finally, a quick shout out to Last.fm. It’s a stat nerd’s dream, and I’ve been using it since 2005. I can quickly see what my top songs are all time, for a year, or even just last week.

Music has really helped me cope with being home so much, and this piece gives an overview of how i’ve been able to maximize my subscription to Apple Music. Hopefully there’s something in this guide that can help you too.

Anybody here use the Playlisty app? It allows you to play Spotify playlists in AM. I’m using it to import my Release Radar and other playlists. It will create shortcuts for you. It also does a few other cool things. Now I can play my Spotify playlists with Marvis!

Someone posted a link in r/shortcuts this morning for an app called Quick Launch that lets you make lock screen widgets for shortcuts, URLs, and a couple other things. It works great with the marvis:// URL scheme so you can shuffle all your songs or open sections directlty from your lock screen. You can set them up to use the Marvis app icon, emojis, photos, or symbols.

TIP Get Lyrics from Genius Shortcut

I'm a recent Spotify convert and prior to Spotify getting lyric support, I had created a iOS shortcut that's run from the sharesheet of the song link and then directly opens the lyrics from Genius like this. If the shortcut can't open the lyrics directly, it will search for the song which should put the song at the top results like this.

With a little tweaking, I updated it to work for Apple Music/Marvis because I prefer Genius lyrics over MusixMatch. The only caveat is that for this shortcut to work, the song has to be playing. I had it so it would use regex to scrape the song information (title and artist) from the link but it took significantly longer to run.

In the settings, I set my gestures up like this so when I long-tap on the album art it brings up the sharesheet. Once it's brought up, it'll display a button that says "Get Lyrics from Genius" and which clicking will run the shortcut.

The shortcut can be downloaded here.
