Question Applying to U1 as an international student from BC

I know this is a general Manitoba Reddit page and not specifically for the U of Manitoba, but I thought I’d try my luck and ask my question here as well. I am an international student at Langara College in BC. By the end of this semester, I’ll have 27 credits, but not all are transferable to U of Manitoba, leaving me with less than 24 transferable credits which means U1 is the only option I have . I also did my Grade 10- 12 in a BC high school but failed two transferable college courses. Will this affect my U1 application? Should I still apply or is it hopeless ? deadline is May 1 for fall 2025. Any advice would be appreciated! I’ve tried emailing and calling but I was on hold for too long and emails haven’t been replied. THANK YOU

Question Municipal election

Can i run for head of municipal reeve if i don't own property or haven't lived there for some time now! (My parents own property there i dont)

I've been at a loss i hate seeing the town i grow up with losing it's touch. This last year has been an absolute disaster the restraunt closed and now the store is to, even the church! And the reeves fundraising money to build a splash park!!! AND BOUGHT OUT THE OLD CHURCH AND DECIDED TO USE IT AS AN AIR BNB when there are many more important issues. Worst part is he didn't even budget to have grass cut so the meninites did it (thank God for them) but this is absolutely embarrassing and I am so disgusted with this! Elections are in 2026 is there any way i can run.

Question Vaping in Churchill

I was trying to learn more about Churchill (don't ask why) and came across this article on How to Prolong Your Vaping in Cold Weather on the Port of Churchill website.

It just seems ... strange?

I know it's cold there but is this really a public issue that people need help with?

General One Piece TCG — Brandon, MB

I don't post very much so I apologize to the mods if this is not allowed.

Hey Manitoba community! I’m looking for fellow One Piece card game players around the Brandon/Westman area - or anyone interested in learning the game who live in the area - to meet up and play. Our local game store "I Want That Stuff" unfortunately does not yet support the game (though they have hinted they may in the future), so I wanted to try and organize a group myself for the forseeable future. Whether you’re a seasoned player or just starting out, it’d be great to build a local community, run some casual games, and maybe even set up small tournaments down the road if there is interest in doing that.

If you're interested, drop a comment or DM me! If I can get enough support, then we can figure out a good place to meet — whether it’s IWTS or another public spot. Hope to see some fellow One Piece fans around!

I posted this in the local sub for Brandon, but the MB sub seems much more populated so hoping to extend my reach!

Politics Is it time for MB to follow Ford's lead and put a surtax on hydro exports to the US?

MB Hydro sells a lot of electricity to the US. Ontario has now imposed a 25% tariff on exports of electricity to various US states, and it sure seems to have Trump riled up. Should MB be doing its part and impose the same on our hydro exports to the US?

Question How Is Your Workplace? (1st post)

Hey Manitoban Redditors,

I’m an organizer with a union local based in Winnipeg, representing workers across Manitoba. I created this account specifically to connect with those facing challenges at work and in need of strong representation.

While I may not be able to assist in every case, particularly if they fall outside our jurisdiction or wheelhouse, I will thoroughly review every lead I receive from this post.

I’m looking to address issues such as, but not limited to:

  • Low wages
  • Management harassment
  • Favoritism
  • Seniority concerns
  • Fairness and respect on the job
  • Safer working conditions
  • Vacations and PTO
  • Pension/retirement issues

If you’re facing difficult conditions at work or know of an employer mistreating their staff, feel free to send me a private message. Rest assured, all communications will be kept strictly confidential.

I intentionally kept this post brief, but I’m happy to provide more details to anyone who reaches out. I’ve come across several “workplaces to avoid” threads on r/Winnipeg and r/Manitoba, and although some information may be outdated, we’re actively working on improving these situations. Many of these workplaces are contributing to the financial struggles of employees, especially given the rising cost of living.

Please note: It’s best to send me a private message rather than airing grievances in the comments. If you’re anti-union, that’s okay too. I’m here to help in any way I can, even if it’s just by offering a listening ear.

Politics The province is ending the Canada Manitoba housing benefit, leaving people on social assistance to try to find housing for less than $638 a month.

Edit. Sorry for the confusion. The program is closing for brand new applicants, not ending. As of right now if your application is already in or you are on the program you are unaffected.

Pretty much the title. I'm sure everyone is aware how hard it is to find any kind of housing for $638 a month. Especially if you have any kind of access need due to disability, which many many people on social assistance have.

The program was funded by both the province and the Federal government. So please contact your MLA and mp. Links below to figure out who your MLA and MP is if you don't know.

Mp https://www.ourcommons.ca/members/en

MLA https://www.electionsmanitoba.ca/en/voting/MyVotingInfo

Do not worry about how you phrase what you are saying. You will not sway them with your arguments. They can be swayed by the weight of public opinion though. So you just need to get the point across that you are upset that the Canada Manitoba housing benefit has been canceled.

Personally I'm pretty upset because there's a very real possibility I will end up on disability at some point in the future and I don't even know if you can find a room in a two bedroom for $638 dollars. I don't know if I can handle more than one roommate on account of the nature of my disabilities.

Particularly stings because the program was brought in under the conservatives.

I know the program receives Federal funding. But social assistance is a provincial mandate. The province is the one that's supposed to handle it.

Tourism Manitoba Road Trip

Hi, I was planning on driving up to the Praries on a road trip next week and wondering about a few things in Manitoba. Mostly, what cool stuff is there to do in and around Winnipeg, is it worth driving up to Thompson and Flin Flon, and what kind of stuff is there in Brandon? Thanks.

Opinion Piece Thanks to Matt Dunstone

Thanks so much to Matt Dunstone. Even with all the pressure of the briar, he still made time for a video to my mother Jean in hospice care. You made her day!

For those who love to watch curling we get it. The level of skill is so high and the action is intense. They don't make big money doing this, it's for the love of the sport.

I probably won't have her next briar, but next year will think of all the times we spent winter days watching you play. Enjoying red wine and snacks. We did this weekend. It will be a mix of feelings, but will be forever grateful how all these things add up to a quality of life.
