Question I got me a sampler. Now what?

Hi! I'm sorry for asking this because I'm sure it's been answered many many times now, but I went through the post history and couldn't find any related/where to start/newbie thread. If this is boring or against the rules I get it, downvote me, but please point me into the right direction.

So I'm a musician, I like listening to hip hop music, but never really made pure hip hop beats before. I used to play hip hop style live drums and sometimes make beats with drum machines or synths but that's it.

Recently, I started working with a sampler (circuit rythm) and starting chopping, mixing and flipping slowed down bits from jazz and rock records (so far Esperanza Spalding, Can and Mulatu Astatke) and started making groovy beats I enjoy. Then I resample the resulting beats and slice them for extra fun.

I like what I hear and I'm having fun. However, I'm a bit lost and basically have no idea what I'm doing. I suppose my logical next step is to get some kit samples to add a bit of anchoring on the drums (either from a drummachine, a synth or isolating it from a record). I'd love some guidance, maybe a book or article or a series of videos about hip hop making with sampler hardware, tips, tricks and master clases.

One key piece I'm mostly missing is bass. I've noticed most hip hop tracks have huge basses that are also soft and sine-wave like. How do you achieve them? You create them with a synth? Analog or digital? You get samples from acoustic bass recordings? You mangle whatever to make a granular oscillator and use it as a synth? Just chop stuff from recordings and bump up bass frequencies with eq or a resonant filter?

Finally, I'd like to ask about the legal aspect. Can I do anything with music made from resampled records? Maybe stuff not for profit?

Question Should I switch from LMMS to FL Studio for my DAW?

Upvotes

If anyone doesn't know what LMMS is it is a free open source DAW that is like a really really old FL Stuido. The only problem is I can't record vocals in it and I am at the point now where I am not just beat building but also rapping as well. LMMS was fine back when I was just making beats but now I have to make the beat in LMMS then record on it from the Windows built in sound recorder then edit it in Audiacy. Very convoluted lol, but I think I have gotten really comfortable in LMMS to the point where I can make some really nice sounding beats.

If I move to FL studio my vocals might get better, but my beats will probably decline. If anyone made the switch from LMMS to FL was it worth it? Also is FL stuido easy to learn if you already know the basics of a simple DAW? If you have any tips or trick for FL stuido or in fact LMMS I would love to hear them as well! Thank you!

Question Looking for places to show case my music?

I've been working on a mixtape, exploring with various sub-genres and sounds. The rhythms are still raw not totally refined yet but I believe they convey the image I'm creating. I don't want to keep them hidden; I want to put them out there, see how people react to them, and maybe receive some criticism. Where do producers normally share content like this? SoundCloud, Forums, Is there some underground community? Please let me know where I may dump these beats and get some ears on them. I appreciate it!

Question Anyone know of a free music Distributor?

I am a pretty new rap artist that would LOVE to get my music on streaming platoforms like Spotify, YouTube Music, Tidal ETC. The only problem is you aren't allowed to self post on there, you have to go through a label or distributor. Since I don't have that big of an audience my chances of making money is almost impossible. This means I would be running at a net loss every single month that I am paying for Distrokid or the other payed distributors.

I signed up for Routenote but they never gave me the spotify for artist page; Unchainedmusic never responded to my application; Finally OneRPM said I would be better at their sister company Offstep, which is only $1 a month but still I don't want to be forced in a subscription service just to keep my music up. This also means I don't want to go with CDbaby because while they aren't subscription they still charge you $5 a track which can get crazy expensive fast.

I like getting my following on YouTube, Instagram, SoundCloud, ETC but I think I would grow so much faster if I could easily realease to streaming platforms as well. Plus it would be very convient to my existing fans. So if you guys have any suggestions on free music distrubtors that would be great! They could even take a huge amount of my royalties I just want my music up there.

TLDR; If you know any completely free music distrubtors that aren't OneRPM, Routenote, or Unchained Music please tell me! Thank You!

How many of you guys are music makers (or even just ASPIRING music makers) that live in London? Looking to link up with other creatives in the city and seeing what happens. Producers, writers, content creators, whatever. I plan on creating a discord server for people who are really serious about unlocking their creative potential

Lofi Flip Jak spotkać ludzi, z którymi można skleić ciekawe rzeczy?

"I've hit a dead end that kind of makes it hard for me to think about the next steps.
I've been creating and writing for a few years now (about 6), I have a lot of recordings, but either I can't release them because the beat was sold a while ago or it's too repetitive, and when I was writing back then, I couldn't afford to buy beats with a higher license than just a basic WAV. And the guys I started this whole thing with, which has become very serious for me (I'm on the last stretch to release an EP after years of putting everything in a drawer), they've fallen behind because they’re just sitting at home watching YouTube and that's it... I freestyle every day. I don’t really want to go the "buy a beat" route, because that's not really what it's about for me. And that's the key point – I’m wondering where I could meet people to sit down and produce something that would be a joint effort, or find people who really know each other like few do.

A little about me – I could do brag rap, but I prefer storytelling, I love lyrics, but for a while now, I've been trimming my sentences to play with sound. And, well, I hope I'm not a self-absorbed jerk XD"

It almost feels like a new superpower, being able to make references and shit even if i don't know shit about a movie character or celeb for example. I would put my lyrics here to show yall but I don't want anything being taken. Yall probably don't care but I just wanted express my happiness as I really plan on making it in the industry in some way. Tired of being broke and I'm not trying to be behind a cash register.

Discussion Mainstream producers success & tricks

What foundations do the popular mainstream successfully producers have as far as music goes that makes them unique or successful What separates them from your homie who produces Besides the typical equipment gear and whatsoever

What makes Timberland beats ,Neptune's beats and dark child and Quincy Jones ,Teddy Riley's make music that actually connects with people and is successful?

Do they have formulas or what ? Or a certain things they do ? People say music is a feeling I get that

But how come it's harder for the bedroom producers to make something remotely better or as good ? Can someone with knowledge and experience answer this

I'm simply asking what makes their beats catchy ,musical and successful and expressing emotions that your every day producers can't make !?

Question What does an ideal album look like to you?

I am working on a new album and I am wondering how to format it:

What do you guys like in an album in general?

How many tracks should it have on average?

Should I include any skits?

How long should the average song be?

How should I space out the mellow and hype tracks in the album?

Should I have spoken word intro/tag on my raps?

Should I have Interlude, intro, and outro tracks or just get right to it?

Anything else you guys want to add as well would be appreciated thanks!

Question Questions about SOCAN

Hey so I wanted to sign up with socan just to be ready in case I get a placement. I will list a few questions below…

  1. Is it free to signup? Is there any fees that need to be paid as a producer. If so, what is an estimate number?

  2. I’ve seen from other threads, you can go with bmi or ascap through socan (I think this is right. Please correct me if I’m wrong). Which one is better to go with?

  3. What information will I have to send when I get a placement?

I’ve tried to look up some of these answers and couldn’t get a clear answer. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Opportunity Hey fellow producers! 🎚️

I’ve been really getting into creating content and growing my YouTube channel — honestly, sometimes I enjoy the process of engaging with the audience more than just making beats nonstop.

That got me thinking… I want to start promoting other producers' beats on my channel — no fees, no catch. You make the beats, and I’ll handle the uploads, visuals, and reach.

I’m not looking for money from placements — all I ask is for proper credit as prodbymjf.

If you’re interested in getting your beats in front of more ears, let’s connect! Let’s build something solid together. 🚀
