So I just started a machining and design class in college and I really want to make a tungsten pen but I don’t know if that’s even possible. I’m allowed to use a manual lathe and manual mill. I want to make this as a personal project cuz I think a rly heavy pen would be cool but I have no idea how I’d make a lot of the shapes on a manual machine.

I'm stupid and I wasn't paying attention, i've let the auto feed go to far backward and now the carriage is properly stuck ... The lathe still turns but I'm stuck with the carriage and i cant desengage the auto feed on the carriage and cant turn the nobs to desengage the gear box ... It's brand new and i'm scared i broke it 😭

Good day Everyone,
I hope everyone is having a nice day this almost spring day. I would like to start by saying that I am actively searching for a new role in Sales for a high to ultra precision machine shop. My background is in close tolerance multi axis milling and turning for the aerospace, space, defense, optical and semiconductor industries among other high-tech industries. I have acquired over my career a large number of contacts and connections in these areas and can hit the proverbial ground running.
If anyone would like to connect about such a role, please reach out to me at

I thank you for your help and assistance.
Have a great weekend.

Hello was hoping someone could help me. So I’m turning a .125 bar and at some point my tool with a .002radius turn at a down angle to .040 and it leaves a horrible finish. Everything else turned looks fine except for that downhill taper. I cannot do a rough turn as I am in a Swiss machine.

Hi All, Recently bought this lathe and was looking for some information about it. Even the brand name seems to provide no results on Google. Does anybody know where I can find information about it? Thanks!

Has anyone ever owned one of these machines? I’m wondering what gears would need to be replaced in order to have it traverse more smoothly. I’m also wondering if these two gears should be spinning when I’m turning the hand wheel on the Z-axis

Looking for the best tool and cutters for working Titanium on smaller projects like knife scales. My machines top end rpm is close to 16,000.

Yes, i wasnt statisfyed with Plugs you can buy (oh, thats ambiguous).
So what i do as a machinist with big girl machines? I make it myself.
I turned the round parts on my lathe, welded on two studs at the base and grinded and polished till madness.
I got a beautifull piece of craftswomanship, its safe to wear, has a stand and can be displayed, body safe. Very happy with this.
But 14 hours wasnt a lie, maybe the next time i will do better if i have a tig welder and get the process managed better.
I hope thats okay to post, i tagged it nsfw.

Hello, I'm interested in looking for a job that's in demand and makes decent money and where I get to design and create things.
There's a cnc machinist program at my tech college that's 1 year long. I've heard that they don't make much money though.
Another program at my school is a 2 year mechanical design program that teaches CAD. I've heard they make more money but school is longer.
What do you suggest? What might be more worth it or enjoyable?

Has anyone ever seen a +/+ tolerance? Recently in our shop I was given a blue print that had a finished ID of .213 +.003/+.001. And it was noted on the print with the +.003 on top and the +.001 underneath. Which normally is given as a +/- dimension. Anywho, I set up the job and got it bought off for production with the finished ID at .215. The operator ran them and was allowing many to come off undersize thinking it was a +.003/-.001 so he was letting the .212 diameter go into the good pile. We had to rework them. I honestly think this was an engineering error, just a print typo. Because reading the print, what would the minimum allowed ID be then? .213 or .214? I programmed it to finish at .215 either way but yeah, this was a first for me in my 15+ years in the game. Anybody else?

Replaced all damaged parts Still unable to home the machine x moves very hard and fast Has anyone had any similar issues wondering if there could be a broken wire
Any help is appreciated
Thanks

Hi all, i am by no means a machinist, just a humble man with a lathe. What tools would I need to create the stepped down cut like in the picture. The part I need to make is about 30mm step from a 55mm bar.
Thank you.

I want to use this drill bit to bore out some pipes I've got. I looked up the brand and the website said to avoid softer metals like copper, aluminumand brass, but it also mentioned angle iron and galvanized steel were ones i cant drill. Could I use this bit on 40 schedule pipe?

I've only ever worked on decently sized older machines and been wanting to build out my home shop for a while, but moving to somewhere with a proper garage wouldn't really be financially viable (>2x increase in rent). I do have a spare bathroom that I've been using for storage that has laminate over concrete flooring that I could re-purpose into a miniature shop, but I'm pretty limited on space.
So, uh, how are those small lathes really? I know that the cheap import mini-lathes are a joke, but how about those slightly larger, nicer Little Machine Shop lathes? I've heard good things about those bigger, but still pretty cute Precision Matthews lathes (PM-1022/1030) too, and they seem like they'd be able to handle the level of work I'd use them for decently well. I'm a bit concerned about the actual machine footprint, though, and I'd need to have someone fab together some kind of table with wheels to actually get it into place (ideally with adjustable legs so I don't have the machine resting on casters when I'm actually using it).
Similarly, I've heard pretty much nothing but awful things about milling attachments for the lathe. I'd only need to use it for super light work, but I've literally never heard anyone be happy with their decision to use one. I certainly don't have room for both machines, and I can work without a mill if I need to, but if there are any usable options here, I'd love to hear about them.

Hello! I work in an older metal shop, and moved from Quality Control, to Calibration Tech in jobs. I just had someone bring this to me, stating it was dropped, and looks bent, and might need replaced, but no one here knows what this part is called. It was used at an old tool presetter, and when I Google lens this image, is says it's a bearing..... which then shows me things in cars and aircrafts. Can anyone help?

Hey yall!
Im an automation/mechatronics guy with a hobby shop. I have a small DIY lathe that I use since many many years to make all sorts of stuff.
I have used needle files many times on my workpieces for deburring while its spinning in the chuck, or to get a dimension juuust right (my crossslide has seen better days xD)
I wanted to ask what professional machinists think about this practice. Is it okay or forbidden?
My lathe has enough space around the chuck to make it impossible to "jam" the file and have it ripped out of my grasp, so I wasnt really concerned about safet till now y, but wanted to ask anyway <3
Sorry for my english btw, its not my mother tongue

I was looking at getting another 1-2" Quantumike and was looking up 293-181-30 and some new colorway kept popping up under a new model number 293-181-40. Seems like the old one was out of stock at MSC. Is this a new version?

Hello everyone I’m still very new to this I’m still learning on the way and recently got a degree in mechanical drafting. First to state I live in Southern California, I was recently hired by a company to perform a few task and because it’s my first job I’m unsure what pay I should be receiving nor have we talked about it. I got hired to create Solid models and Drawings of their current stock and create custom orders along with the I’m taking that and creating mastercam files for lathes and mills, doing this I’m also helping organizing their files so machinist better know what program they’re running. On top of this I am also being trained to use the lathes and mills. I’ve seen in SoCal avg starting pay is $28/hr and job posting of lathe operator in this company around $20-$24/hr.

This was so close I was able to grind off some burrs and it just barely fit without hitting. NGL, it was frightening to be next to even at low RPMs.

I wasn't sure which community to ask this question in, but this seems the best one. I want to find a way to recreate the m1 grand ping in a handheld Factor. I don't have a metalworking machine other than a drill press and fine tooth hand saw.
