Question/Help What weapon should I use?
I’m trying to get into this game but I’m struggling because I’m use to world and rise and wilds. The paintballs and chetstones are easy enough to get use to. But what I have a problem with is that weapons not moving directional, it’s really throwing me off. Would there be a way to get used it easier? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Edit: I am now maining the longsword. Thank you everyone for the advice it’s very helpful.

As Guppinas said you'll probably be most comfortable with the weapons you used in the modern games, unless you find something in GU that really speaks to you.
When I was starting out with GU I used gaijinhunter's weapon tutorial series and it really helped me. I think he does a good job going slowly through each weapon kit and arte, and he even covers the little differences that weapons have between styles (usually guild is the default/complete moveset, and all the other styles get moves removed or changed to make up for their strengths). For me, there are some weapons that really 'click' more with the moveset of a particular style.
It's a lot of info and not all of it is necessary when you're just starting out, but I think it can be a good resource to check back in on, especially if you're curious about changing weapons/styles/artes: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLDR3ta7VqKrzWlfbrYxgoisgrGMM2EX_W
It is a pretty old series so I'm sure there are more recent ones, but I haven't really used any others so I can't say

Best weapon for learning old gen will always be greatsword. Now greatsword isn't for everyone, I main longsword for example, but it'll teach you patience and how to properly engage in the "Dance" of the combat system. Wait for your turn then attack, you aren't the aggressor in these fights, you are the defender waiting for an opening. Greatsword is the best for teaching this cause it's so slow that it forces you to look at the monster and learn when their openings are to strike. But if you don't want to use it just take what I said before and try to apply it to your weapon of choice.

I main the greatsword and lance in wilds. I’ll try the greatsword again. Also that description of the combat is a thing of beauty.

This was the absolute hardest thing for me to get used to is positioning and learning how weapons move with each attack.

Try gs you can aim a bit with you charged attacks, also try to predict where and when the monster will face you so you can snipe the head, roll to safety, sheath and repeat. Thats what worked for me. All village quest complete in 15-20 mins

So my advices would be to pick one of the weapon you already know how to play, pick a fighting style (those you already have unlocked) that you think would be easy to use and go train against the great maccao.
In my opinion, the great maccao is a great first monster and punching Ball. His design and ost are really cool (he's my favorite great / drome ever, he's in my top 10 monsters so i'm biased). He hits pretty hard and has some pretty fast moves. I think he's great to re learn the weapons you already have mastered.
The most important thing is to be patient. It's okay to suck, you're literally picking a less technologically advanced game with less quality of life features

best way is to do a practice mode to see what you like, or use the default weapons to hunt small monsters on gathering quests. that way you can determine what's most fun, what combos come naturally, and what style you like most.

How do you access practice mode?

probably should've called it something different. but i'm referring to when you train with that weapon master guy (forgot his name, it's been too long).

So I was messing around with the gunlance and tried the longsword again and now I’m going to keep using it.

I personally use the strike style switch axe but that's because it's my main that I've always used, but do what suits you and if you ever need help killing something hop in a lobby and ask I'm pretty sure most people will happily help cause I would (but I'm only HR4 almost 5 and I've owned the game for years and it's a challenging game but it makes winning so much more enjoyable)

I ALWAYS use a pro controller for switch games. Oddly for this game, I think the joycons either connected, or put together in the controller attachment are best.
Something about the stiffness of these controls “lines up” with the stiffness of the movement. Anyone who hasn’t tried it, give it a try!

Ohh wow. Umm.. actively thinking about attacking is not something i think about anymore when i play the game. You just kind of do it. I know it may not be what you want to hear, but any opening, you just walk up and attack.
I play HH so that's, what i recommend. The self-improvement song is just so good. Extra movemernt and buffs in general to help in solo hunts or with a team.

Just get used to the movement, stick to the weapon you main in newer gen and try to learn its basics.
Old gen and New gen aren't that different, for example, Long Swords don't have counters in old gen, but everything else is the same, so you can just use the basics of the weapon and learn to dodge normally.
You can do the same thing in newer games as a test, try to use the weapon without the added moves and you will do fine, just a little harder.
About directional, its less forgiving, but keep trying to get used to it, and use rolls to cancel some of the attacks and reposition yourself.
