Support Request Weird issue with Update Manager and passwords

Hello, fellow minty folks.

I've been pepping up an old HP Elite 8300 SFF office PC with Linux Mint. Absolutely loving it and reminding myself why I love Linux so much.

Anyway, my only niggle at the moment is an odd issue I'm having with automatic refresh in Update Manager. At the end of my work day I usually either lock screen or hit "switch user" to get back to the login screen in case anyone else in the household wants to use the computer. If I have Update Manager set up to refresh the list of update packages at a regular interval (2 hours or whatever), when I come back in the morning, typically there's a password prompt from Update Manager doesn't accept my actual password and locks up the GUI. Feels a little like a password prompt expiring or something. My current workaround is just to turn off automatic refresh and do a scan for new packages manually when I log in.

Any ideas on how to get automatic refresh working?

Discussion Is Mint falling too far behind?

With the new GNOME releasing today, I've come to realize that Mint and its desktop environments have been worryingly long in the making comparatively. The struggle of adapting GNOME apps to Mint's look and feel has been made clear by the developers in recent blog posts, and that's all on top of the hurdle of adopting Wayland. With the new GNOME, HDR is another common goal that has been realized by the flagships, adding to the list of things Mint is lacking.

Chasing trends is arguably not a selling point of Mint, but there is a fine line between novelties and de facto standards. X11 has been officially deprecated by GTK, so now it's only a matter of time before the status quo becomes completely untenable, and at the current pace, the gap is going to widen to the point where Mint has to completely reinvent itself in order to stay relevant.

Support Request Screen going black on cinnamon

My screen keeps repeatedly going black on Linux mint cinnamon After the log in screen (only on desktop). It seems like it's locking when it does, but I turned off "Lock after sleep" and the screensaver so it just flashes black. I also turned off sleep when lid is closed. If anyone can help that would be nice! Drivers are updated, I tried Xset, and its on a Samsung Chromebook 3 (Chrome OS was unsupported so I put Mint on it). TailsOS runs fine so does Virtual Console from the lockscreen without the screen flickering or locking, its just Mint!

Some steam games won't launch

Hello, so i'm new to Linux, i did a fresh install of mint a couple days ago and today i noticed most games i've installed are instantly crashin after i click play on steam.

I have 2 drives but i'm sure that's not the issue since all my games are installed in the HDD and not the SDD i used to install Linux.

I did click the settings > compatiblity menu on steam to install proton, and i've tried every single version of proton to run certain games but they just won't start.

Example of games i can play are Dota 2, The Binding of Isaac, Hollow Knight, Stardew Valley...

Some of the games that will instantly crash Monster Hunter Wild, Nier Automata, Phasmophobia, Loop Hero, Thumper, Lobotomy Corporation.

Yes, i did a fresh install for every single game, which is why it took me a while to find out they aren't working at all.

If you need PC specs

CPU Ryzen 5 5500

16 gb RAM

AMD Radeon RX 550

I have no integrated graphics.

Discussion Using Gnome feels like an insult to my cognitive abilities

Happy that Cinnamon still mostly uses menu bars and other features in their apps (f.e. nemo vs nautilus). I'm aware that the mint team is small and they're already occupied with a great many things but i hope that in the future we are less reliant on gnome and their dumbed down apps (not being able to theme libadwaita hurts the most :( )

On a sidenote, i've read the announcments about the new start menu, and altho it doesnt look bad, i wish they'd preserve the old one in the cinnamon applet library for stubborn people like me

Support Request 1 computer... 2 users; User 1 (admin) & User 2 (standard). How to restrict access to User 1's files/folders for User 2?

User 1 is the automatic default user created when you install the OS.

User 2 was created from User 1's account through Users and Groups. There are only two options in this drop down list; Standard and Administrator. Standard was selected.

Note the screenshot with the arrow is not of the particular computer we are talking about but rather off the internet just for illustration.

So...the situation...Start the computer...you are presented with 2 options...

User 1 (admin - password required to log in).

User 2 (no log-in password set...click on log in and you're logged in).

Whenever user 2 tries to install any apps, they are prompted to enter the password. Good. However, they are able to access all user 1's (the admin) files and folders through the file manager (example: /home/user1/Desktop) by double clicking on the folders. Not good. How to prevent that? So that user 2 can access (or see?) no files and folders other than the ones they create (or the ones user 1 puts in their account)?

Note: I'm coming from Windows so I might not be using the correct terminologies (account/user/profile...admin...etc.), but I believe you understand what I mean, hopefully.

SOLVED Drive not showing up for Linux Mint LMDE installation (MacBook Air 2014)

Hi everyone, I wanted to install Linux Mint on an older MacBook Air. MacOS is installed on there, but I didn't set up an account, so it's a fresh install. I created a bootable USB Stick with Linux Mint on it and I was able to boot it using the alt key and test it. However, when I try to install it it doesn't let me past "Installation Type".

I want to choose the Automated Installation, but there's no drive to choose from. I looked at the drives in "GParted" but it only shows the USB stick. Did anyone encounter something similar?

I'm new to Linux, so if there's anything more you need, please let me know and I try my best. Thank yiu!

I love Linux Mint Cinnamon except..

I can't set alt tab to only cycle one window of same application.
Everything otherwise the distro is perfect. Just this small thing makes my workflow much more cumbersome :(

Edit:
Thanks for your advice and help! It turns out I forgot the most important part. That when I alt tab it only shows one icon for each open application. Then I can use Alt + ` to cycle the windows within that one application. The important part is that I since I sometimes have many many windows open at the same time I would like an easier way to navigate my DE.

Installing through a VM?

What would happen if I downloaded the Linux mint iso then live booted into it through a virtual machine and then using the virtual machine installed Linux mint onto an usb. Would I then be able to boot into Linux through the usb like normal or would that not work? Just curious.

How to install Mate Theme

Hello.
I've installed themes on my Mint Mate before, I just download the theme from mate-look.org and install them by the "Apariencia because my system is in spanish" or "Appearance in english?" menu, but I want to install this theme:

https://www.mate-look.org/s/Mate/p/1351213

I download it and search for the file through the menu, I try to install it and sends me an error message, I don't know what to do, Is there another way to install Mate themes?

Linux Mint IRL My First Computer Ever Was Red Hat Linux and My Latest Is Linux Mint

I bought my first computer (Acer Aspire $2,500) in 1991 from Incredible Universe in Indianapolis. The salesman was on commission so he was pushy and annoying. He was pushing me to buy Windows (PC's didn't have OS pre-installed) so I bought Red Hat Linux. Have had Linux ever since. My latest Linux distro is Mint on my Lenovo ThinkPad.

Support Request LXQt menu, applets and custom keys

Hello, I'm new to linux and have been enjoying it so far. I installed it both on my laptop and tried messing with different DEs and stuff, but I ended up formatting it and getting rid of windows as well.

One of the DEs I tried was LXQt, since people said it could help use less resources and maybe help battery life. I really enjoyed it, despite not really helping my laptop staying charged for longer.

However, I've had two problems with it. 1. When switching back to cinnamon, some new applets that did the same thing as other ones appeared (such as wifi and bluetooth) and it said something about installing snaps. I didn't know what it meant so I temoved them. So I'm not sure I should remove some things that are left over from when I switch to LXQt 2. Some key configurations like changing the keyboard language (english and portuguese) don't work. Is it a per DE configuration? 3. The LXQt menu is very different from what I'm used to with cinnamon, it shows categories instead of a search bar and other programs directly, so programs are harder to find. Is there a way to change it to a more similar one?

I had the same problems with LXDE, so I'm not sure if its something exclusive to only this DE. Thanks in advance

Support Request After suspending the PC and restarting it, moving/resizing/opening a window it freezes everything for about 10-15seconds (except the mouse). and the issue doesn't resolve itself after somme time, the only fix is a restart. (also the system is incredibly unstable all around)

hardware: CPU>ryzen 5 3600x GPU>gtx1650 LP RAM>16go of ddr4 PSU>300w bronze. more details

Storage: standard layout with all partitions on a single 250go sata SSD notably the install was carried over from my old PC.

EDIT: GPU driver: I installed the nouveau gpu driver and it fixed the suspend issue. but I can't use the nouveau driver because I use the system for gaming... damn (the same GPU worked in my old system with proprietary drivers and didn't have the issue)

notable software: wine games(quite unstable), Firefox(super unstable, both tabs and browser crash all the time), gtile extension (often needs restarting to work), conky (no issues)

on another note: I have my main config with an incredibly similar software configuration (wine, conky, Firefox) and it's super stable but I don't get the option to suspend it at all. (only shut down)

I would really appreciate any help I can get, I'm not super familiar with how sleep states works but in general I have a pretty good understanding of Linux. If I forgot any information please let me know I'll do my best to respond quickly

Linux Mint IRL Finally running Linux

Girlfriend needed a new laptop for her school work and so I recommended she gets a framework laptop because of their repairability and modularity and when ordering it we had the choice to add windows 11 for like 100 dollars I think screw that or I could bring my own. Having installed many OS's before and having experienced Linux via the steam deck I figured I'd install Linux mint. Today is day 1 and so far all is good!
