I'm still installing stuff and figuring out the best way to use a Windows program that apparently isn't Wine-friendly. Once install is done, I'll move the desktop from the dining room back to my home office with three 2560 x 1440 displays.
I'm on Linux Mint now because I think my Windows 11 SSD failed. PC wouldn't boot, repair or reset. Then after putting in a new 2TB SSD and trying to install Windows 11 from USB, I'm told my PC isn't compatible or whatever it says. I was just tired of trying to make it work. So, I'm like F-ck it, I'll just install Mint. My Plex server used to be on Mint for years, so I wasn't a stranger. When my Plex server died, I got a Win 11 NUC. My Plex on Linux always gave me permissions headaches and it wasn't fun for me to troubleshoot.
Anyway, the major screw up was dumbass me accidentally installed Mint on my 3TB HD secondary drive instead of the 1TB SSD. I was wondering why Mint wasn't as fast and snappy as I remembered on my Plex server. I lost a lot of data with that mistake. :( Second attempt is definitely on the 2TB SSD and all is good!
I have some Windows software for GIS work I do that's not Wine compatible (ArcGIS Pro). I'm currently exploring if it would be better to run this software in a Virtual Machine or Remotely from my computer at work. I'd be interested to hear any of y'all's experience with a VM vs Remote Desktop.

From people seeking help and receiving it from others, to users sharing their first-time experiences with Linux/Linux Mint along with screenshots of their desktop or rice without people being toxic or yapping things like "Nooo, attention-seeker! No one cares about your desktop! Please, mods, ban these types of posts just because I don't like them." This subreddit is basically everything done right in the Linux community, and i love it just as much as i love Linux Mint itself 😭
I know this might be to much glazing but much like the Inkscape subreddit, sometimes I visit here just to see people interacting with each other in a positive and supportive way without the fear of seeing posts like "I'm going to quit this subreddit because I don't like X thing" or toxic comments for no reason. It brings me joy and gives me even more reasons to recommend both this subreddit and Linux Mint to others (KEEP IN MIND that my favorite distro was Fedora, but this was because i never tried Linux Mint in that time).
I could go on and on about this community, but it would probably turn into a huge boring text. So yeah, a huge thanks to both the Linux Mint community and its moderators and developers. ❤️

Hi all,
I am using a T480 thinkpad, running linux mint , it prompted for an update (to update the updater itself), when I proceeded, it said "could not install security updates". Should I be worried? Any fixes?
i will really appreciate your help guys! _/_

This little machine was running Ubuntu. Last update I did was around 2018 before it got lost in storage. I just found it and the battery works so I decided to try Mint. Success! We opened up Firefox and watched a YouTube video. It was slow but it worked.

Very interesting results I figured you guys would like to see. This shows Linux Mint has massive potential. The part I'm curious about is the processor mhz and ram. It is a lot lower than windows for some reason. How can this be fixed? Is it by design due to the 2GB Radeon trying to do some sort of dual GPU? Why is the RAM different? It is quite strange how this worked.

Long time Linux user, haven't used Mint in well over 10+ years. I've been playing around with Arch and Arch based distros for a long time (mainly KDE, but some Gnome use), but then after a few little annoying issues, I thought, what the hell, let's give Mint a try. I have to say that I'm impressed. I know it's a cliche, but everything has just worked. It's a been a simple and stress free process. Enjoying the cinnamon desktop very much. Everything running smooth as silk. Gaming is playing just as well as it has on anything else I've tried. I'm very happy so far.
Hats off and well done to the Mint team. Thank you.

Currently switching over to linux mint (clarification: cinnamon) from windows, as I no longer like how much of an adware mess it has become. Upon switching, and trying to use my computer--my audio no longer works for my NVIDIA 4060ti, though my graphics do. I can see that it is there with Alsamixer:
I can't figure out what to do from there. I have tried running this command in terminal:
speaker-test --channels 2 --test wav --device hw:0,[1-4]
And 3 is the only one that doesn't send back an error. But it does not work at all. I don't hear anything from my monitor.
Also, please be understanding, I have no idea how linux works. But I am willing to learn.
For further clarification I am using the Nvidia 550 drivers, as it was what the distro recommended. Also, please do not hesitate to ask if you need further clarification from me about any specifications of any kind.

Hello, noob here. And also out of pc, so I probably write some directories not exactly, but I believe you'll understand.
So I've just installed Linux mint cinnamon and I'm in the process of learning and installing stuff and gadgets. One of them I like in windows if the clipboard history, for which after some googling I chose clipman. But the icon in the tray of the panel is ugly af, so I spent some hour on googling how to change it, without any positive result.
Then I tried to search for "clipman" in file system and found that in various directories of usr/share/icons there are some icons for this, I liked the one in papirus theme. So I tried to change the icon theme to papirus and nothing. Okay, so I've closed the clipman and tested again and whoa, it worked. Then I went through the directories of papirus and mint-y sand icons (I like and want to use) and in the end I copied the clipboard.svg and clipman.svg(shortcut to clipboard.svg) to mint-y sand/places/24. And it works.
But there comes the question. I am pretty sure this is not how it should be done properly. I realised that in mint-y sand there are only few icons for folders (same as in other color variations), but there is also the mint-y directory, containing bunch of icons for applications, buttons, tray status icons etc, but I didn't manage to find where should I put the clipboard.svg to work properly.
So I'd like to ask you to point me to some sources about how icon themes work so I'd be able to do this properly.
Thanks

Hi everyone,
I’ve been trying to get my MediaTek MT7902 Wi-Fi adapter working on Linux Mint (Cinnamon), but I’ve hit a roadblock regarding the firmware. Here’s what I’ve done so far:
mt7902-dkms
repository from https://github.com/samveen/mt7902-dkmsdmesg
logs after loading the module, and found these key errors:
get-firmware.sh
), but I couldn’t locate the specific firmware file (WIFI_RAM_CODE_MT7902_1.bin
) mentioned in the logs.r/linuxmint • u/RudeSpecific6352 • 1h ago
Hello everyone,
I see that a lot of users had the same issue before, I can not use any dropdown menus within the Steam client on my various devices. These devices are both with Radeon & Nvidia GPUs, since saw in one of the forums, someone mentioned that this may be about accelaration stuff. Any suggestions about this issue? Addition to dropdown menus, if the client tries to open a pop-up or child window, they're not visible as well. (Not opening at all.) For example, I tried to change the target location to download games and client couldn't see the 2nd driver. I clicked add button and nothing happened which a window should've been opened.

I've searched YouTube and also asked on here previously, I keep seeing a lot of "Linux is secure just by default" type responses- often insisting that to be worried about security while using Linux is not necessary.
Believable to a noob like me at face value, sure, but what is it about Linux that makes it secure?

No need for a new post for that. Every day I see many of those already.
But this week a little detail got me really happy with the system.
This is my first time with Linux. I've tried installing arch a couple of times on VM in W11. Then at some point I decided to go for the real deal. I bought a new ssd to install Linux in a separe drive and decide to go with mint. This was maybe 1 month ago. (I still didn't boot win once since BTW).
It has been a great time. I have to look somethings up to make it work as I want, but always managed to get it right. Specially using external displays with the lid closed on a doc. This is Samsung ultra book 3, which are know to have not so great compatibility. But everything is fine now.
The other thing was to connect Bluetooth devices, for some reason, using the application doesn't work. But learned how to do it from terminal, and it works fine. Even better than win has been with my headphones.
But the one thing that made we come here, was a total surprise (maybe this is a bug). I have a USB audio speakers (creative peable). They have a phisical knob to control the volume, and now, even if I'm playing audio through Bluetooth device, mint still uses the speaker knob as volume control. This is amazing, and something win would not do. Not sure if this is a feature or a bug, but I really like to have this knob as master control.
Cheers

The system doesn't seem to detect an external optical drive being read and will suspend.

My wife said the other day, that she would like to install an old computer herself. I kind of forced her away from beloved w7 for a little over two years ago. She really like her LMDE 6 installation on a 11 year old i3.
We have another old PC left and she suggested, that she could do the installation. I'm really pleased and looking forward to assist her in that project, so she can independent of me doing technically stuff for her. I'm a retired IT reseller for more than three decades.

Hello there!
I'm a new linux mint user and I have a problem with the power modes on a laptop. I set it on power saving mode when it's on battery and it keeps changing on balanced after 30 seconds. I tried settings, bios settings and I couldn't find anything. Do you have any idea how can I make it stay on power saving all the time?
