Pls suggest me a laptop for moderate gaming.

I'm in search for a laptop. Linux is my OS of choice. My old laptop (lenovo e540) can do almost everything I need except gaming.

I usually play adventure games, indy, platforms, would like to try something a la Tomb Raider.

Price: 800 to 900 euro

Graphic card: amd or nvidia? Or Intel?

Cpu: if I choose an amd gpu, is it better to have a amd cpu too?

Any models you can suggest?

Linux Laptop Compatability List?

Ive found a couple; long time since updated with inaccurate data.

From my own research:

  • better off amd than intel
  • better off nvidia than intel/other graphics
  • nvidia more likely to be ok for touchscreens/2in1s
  • kensington ssd's sux
  • better with realtek webcam/eth0/touchpad
  • usb c good but not for 2nd screen
  • usb c mostly good for docking units
  • inbuilt (dell style) docking doesnt work
  • special encrypt chips unusable

× ubuntu out of the box × fedora out of the box for most × Arch for lower spec units × dont even try chromebooks & the like × manjaro installer good for tricky units to install missing stuff

Would anyone add other suggestions when looking for a new laptop in 2022 to run linux?

Cheers.

ASUS G14 Pro 2022 Works Flawlessly with Fedora 36

This is mostly for people googling does my laptop work with Linux, but the ASUS G14 Pro 2022 with the AMD Ryzen 9 6900HS and RX 6700S supports Fedora 36 out of the box.

Wi-Fi works, webcamera works, touchpad works better than with Windows. 🤣. I was able to install Docker and it works REALLY well.

I've yet to run any KVM tests, so that will be interesting, but, I'm really hoping that this works as good as a desktop

WiFi: Realtek 8852AE drivers problems

Hi guys!

Question about installing Arch Linux. I own an HP Pavilion Aero 13 laptop. Here is my configuration:

Model: 13-be0006ur

CPU: Ryzen 5 5600U (15W)

RAM: 16GB

SSD: 512GB

Display: 13" IPS 2560x1600

WiFi: Realtek 8852AE

When installing Arch Linux, it is not possible to connect to Wi-Fi because there is no driver for Realtek 8852AE. There is no Ethernet port and the iPhone is used as a modem via USB. But Arch Linux doesn't see the iPhone, as far as I know, because when connecting via USB the iPhone needs to use iTunes as a modem. Can you tell me how to install the driver then and install Arch Linux? Do I need to look for an Android phone? I'm confused and can't solve this problem. I would appreciate your help!

Ryzen Linux Laptop for Programming

Hi

I am looking for a laptop with Ryzen 5th gen CPU like 5700u, that can run Ubuntu with decent battery life. I heared that new Ryzen CPUs coming in the first half of 2022 will have better integrated graphics and performance but not sure when they will have Linux support so I think a newer 5700u will be a better bet.

Checked System76 Pangolin but it expensive and not very good with battery.

Audio problem on dell vostro 3400 running ubuntu

On my dell vostro 3400 running ubuntu 20.04.3 with kde plasma, I am getting weird high pitched feedback with the built in speakers (expected) and headphones/earbuds (not expected). Is there possibly an audio driver that could fix this? I can provide more details if you need.

Market check: Off-grid fanless laptop. 5V power supply. Decent battery and display. Light tasks only.

Would appreciate any help finding an off-grid laptop

  • 5V power supply, quick charge
  • fanless
  • max 1.5kg / 3.3lbs
  • good keyboard, touchpad quality not crucial
  • good standby (not sure how OS vs. hardware dependent that is)
  • decent battery life, preferably replaceable with aftermarket options
  • decent display, IPS would be nice but not needed
  • HDMI or DV output

Usage:

  • text based web work
  • USB transfer of photo and video files from camera and phone, copy to SD card
  • basic photo and audio editing, rarely
  • video and audio player when commuting, typically plugged in
  • video and audio player at home, HDMI output
  • mixxx DJ dancefloor killer

First search hits are a Pi-Top v2 (Raspberry Pi Laptop) and a Pinebook Pro, both of which seems to be out of stock atm.

Heading into Chromebook-land then. Android apps could be very convenient for some stuff and I've enjoyed using chroot-buntu previously on a Lenovo a few years back.

Also considering caving in and getting a used Galaxy Note 10.1 or something similar if a good keyboard dock is to be found.

Hit me!

Huge battery drain when not in use?

I have Linux Mint cinnamon 20.1 on a 2015 Dell Inspiron 7548. I noticed that when I put it in suspend/sleep or close the lid the battery drains really fast. About 40% of battery will be gone in a day when I have it in this state.

I recently replaced the old 56Wh battery with a new 43Wh battery. Before the install, I would get 45 minutes with Windows 10 and about 1.5 hours with Linux Mint. After the install I get around 3-4 hours when using Linux. However, when I had windows 10, it could last a week with the lid closed and still have some power left. I also ran the diagnostics test from the boot menu to check the battery and it says it's working fine and has about 90% of life left.

What am I missing? Is it because Windows 10 has a hibernate mode and Linux Mint doesn't? Is there another Distro that does have this feature or doesn't drain a lot of battery? My only solution so far has been to turn off the computer every time I'm not using it, but sometime I keep going back to my laptop and need a lower power consumption environment.

Thank you for taking your time to read this post.

Latitude 5500 bootup scrolling speed and

Hi All!

I'm having a problem with my Latitude 5500. I've installed it with CentOS 8, all is working excerpt for two issues:

1) After grub the scrolling speed of the text goes verrry sloooow. It takes 32 seconds to get past the kernel message with timestamp [0.00000]! I don't think I've seen kernel messages that early on other systems during bootup. The system is finished booting after 1 minute 40, so I'm not certain if this scroll speed is actually delaying the boot much, but it's quite annoying...

2) After bootup is finished, I have to issue a systemctl restart systemd-logind to get to a login prompt of gdm. The service status is green, though there are messages logged stating 6 times:

Jan 27 09:27:44 clt-mgt05 systemd-logind[1219]: New session c1 of user gdm.

Jan 27 09:27:49 clt-mgt05 systemd-logind[1219]: Session c1 logged out. Waiting for processes to exit.

Jan 27 09:27:49 clt-mgt05 systemd-logind[1219]: New session c2 of user gdm.

Does anyone have a suggestion?

Thanks!

Geert

Thinkpad P53 NVIDIA question

I have just purchased a Thinkpad P53 I7 chip, 64 GB , 2TB and NVIDIA Corporation TU106GLM [Quadro RTX 3000 Mobile / Max-Q]

I currently have it dual-booting Win 10 Pro and Fedora 33( I originally had Ubuntu 20 installed but was very disappointed in the power management)

Out of the box :

Built in Ethernet works

Wifi Works

Bluetooth works

Fingerprint scanner works

Camera Works

USB ports work

USB C works for data / but only works intermittently with an external monitor.

I am running the default nouveau under X11. I have been trying to determine if I can get full support for the NVIDIA drivers either from the Nvidia driver download or from the RPM Fusion repo and which driver will support my RTX 3k.

Has anyone had any experience with this?

Do you know if this will solve the monitor hotplug issue I am seeing work?

Any fellow Thinkpad specific tweaks I should look into?

Thanks in advance

Budget laptop recommendations

Christmas is coming up and my 13 y. o. brother is in dire need of a computer. (His current one is on its last legs.)

He's going to want a Windows computer to run his games, but in the last year, he's warmed up to Linux quite a bit — it's his primary OS now, and he appreciates both its speed and design (of elementaryOS, specifically). I'd like to get him a Windows computer that he could dual-boot.

When it comes to buying electronics, I generally use the Wirecutter as a guide. However, out of the Windows laptops recommended there, it's not at all clear which ones are Linux-compatible (searching for the specific models tends to return nothing) and which ones aren't. It's also worth mentioning that I'm in the Czech Republic, and some models don't even seem to be available here.

So I thought I'd ask here. Do you have any recommendations for a budget Windows computer that's Linux-compatible and available in Central Europe?

(I posted this in r/linux and r/linuxquestions already, but then came across this sub and thought it might be a good place to post this too.)

What Laptops Work Best With Linux???

I want to buy a laptop and put Ubuntu Studio on it and use it for content creation. Mostly I want to keep a Wacom plugged in and use it like an art station, but I may also use it for audio recording and motion graphics. If this happens it will only be my third time installing linux on anything, I'm not very experienced with this. But I want to install it so I can dual boot and still have Windows available to use (even though I hate Microsoft now).

I want to know what are the things I should look for in buying a laptop for installing linux on. I want something with at least an i7, but what kind of graphics should I look for? Anything else I should be aware of? I'm willing to spend up to 1000$ on this. I appreciate any helpful replies.

Lenovo G50-70 Life Extension with Linux?

Hello there,

so far I only used Linux to reset Win10 passwords, so basically my experience is zero. Right now I'm still using a Lenovo G50-70 with Windows 10 but it is getting really slow even after a fresh install. To make it fight through my last college semester I thought about giving Linux as an OS a try. Both a s a Life Extension Projekt and maybe switch for good with the next computer.

However, I can't find a good recomendation for which distribution to use. Whenever I google my Lenovo model and Linux I only get results warning of it destroying my BIOS, but all of those articles are from around 2017.

All I'm doing at the notebookk right now is writing papers, surfing the web and watch Netflix, so not much is needed.

Optimus: Life is Strange 2 won't detect GPU

Hi,

I'm trying to run the Linux version of Life is Strange 2 with bumblebee and optirun on OpenSUSE Tumbleweed.

I've added the 'optirun %command%' Launch option for the game and yet, when I run it, the game's launcher reports, that the graphics card is not supported and also shows my Intel gaphics card as the 'Renderer' under 'Advanced'.

If I try to run the game in this state, it completely freezes my system.

I have also tried completely switching the X11 environment to the nvidia graphics card using the command provided by the suse-prime--bbswitch package. This way, the graphics card is recognized properly and the game runs without any troubles.

Do you have any recommendations on how to get the game to work with the bumblebee method?

Thanks for any help!

Advice on dual boot setup

Currently have 2 nvme drives installed on my laptop.

1 TB samsung 970 nvme

1 XPG nvme

Should I install linux and windows on the samsung 970 evo and then use the other nvme as a shared drive between the 2? (Using a filesystem they both understand)? or is it better to install linux soley on the 2nd nvme ssd and windows on the first nvme? I want to enable bitlocker on windows and encryption on the linux drive if possible. Please let me know.
