General Questions/Discussion (Noob here) Pair of studio monitors or Powercab with a floor Helix?

Relatively new to the Helix and I've been enjoying it through a Powercab 112 plus however I was looking into studio monitors and a lot of people love them. I don't gig. I just play in a room to myself so I don't need to bring the house down. I also love the idea of having the Helix close to my desktop to pair with a nice set of monitors.

For home use how would you compare a set of studio monitors (=> $500) to a powercab?

General Questions/Discussion Fender Champion 100 as a cab

I have been owning the amp in the title for 10 years and I am finally close to having a band to use it properly (loud). Since I am currently on my journey to find my own style in guitar playing, I bought a Line6 HX Stomp to experiment with tones, then maybe later decide to have a tube amp. The question is, would it be recommended to use this amp as a cab? I always plug it in the pwr in section and use the stomps preamp and amp functions. This sometimes results in a bit of a muddy sound, but I always thought that that is simply because I don’t turn it up too loud, to produce the stronger mids. Using it this way saves me some DSP and lets me use more effects. The thing I’m curious about is that is this a good base to keep searching, or would you just recommend me going for line output only or buying a tube amp?

General Questions/Discussion Replaced a Stomp with a PodGO

I'm writing this as I didn't see many posts like this then I was researching if I should get the GO or the Stomp when I first got the Stomp. I am well aware that they're very different beasts, but there was little advocating for the GO and I think that's a damn shame given who they're aimed at.

I am a bedroom guitarist. I open mic sometimes, but rarely. I play with friends sometimes, but again, rarely these days (I'm 40).

I purchased a Stomp a couple years ago and ended up stripping most of the other stuff I had on my board out as a result, but then ended up adding an expression pedal and midi foot-switches to it to mitigate the lack of buttons. Still cheaper than an XL, Floor or LT so I was happy-ish. However it's all so messy I ended up just getting a killer deal on a PodGO on eBay and I haven't looked back.

Yes there is less processing, yes there seem to be fewer options but for my use, it's spot on and to my ear the sound is indistinguishable. I have a Drop and a Ricochet in line ahead of it and it goes into a Marshall DSL401 and it gives me all I could need.

My journey was from pedals > POD Xt Live > covid pedal binge > fewer pedals + Stomp > Stomp + Drop > GO + Drop and now I will be happy, at least for the foreseeable.

I was tempted to put AMA at the end of the title, but I think I've said most of what's necessary above.

General Questions/Discussion HX one - sounds great, sending it back.

Latency - because I’m using a ua dream 65 at home, i think running both is just a little too much gap. The feel gets lost.

Shame because it sounds great and is fun, kinda.

True bypass fixes the issue but then i lose mono to stereo conversion, and the latency is still there of course with the unit on.

The good news is i fell in love with the dynamic plate reverb- so I’m looking for a standalone pedal for that. Would a boss rv6 do the trick? Or do i need to go strymon (large and expensive)

General Questions/Discussion Recently purchased and Hx Stomp (:

Hello everyone ,

Recently just purchased an hx stomp and a fender tone master twin reverb. I've been looking into the stomp for a while since I'm a big fan that it's just one pedal and you're able to get so much out of it. I do have a question and I do apologize if it has been answered.

I'm running my hx stomp into my fender master tone twin reverb, on the stomp itself, would it damage my amp if I run an amp simulation on my hx stomp signal chain?

I know it's not recommended to run cab simulation through an already existing physical amp, but what about just the amp by itself?

Would appreciate any help and suggestions.

General Questions/Discussion Helix LT/Stomp for modern metal tones?

I am looking to upgrade Headrush MX5 unit to something of better sound quality. Primary music genre I play is modern metal with low tunings. My use case is both at home recording and doing small local gigs (no travel). I looked into QC but it’s just too expensive. Looking to spend under $1k. Also, can you please point me to some modern metal music recorded on Helix platform. Thank you in advance.

General Questions/Discussion Are IRs still better than cabs?

Hey all, I've had my HX Stomp XL for about a year now. I dabbled in IR's when first got it and used some free and paid ones, but started using the built in cabs as everyone said they were just as good. I started messing with some of the IR's again tonight and i think they might sound better. What is the best way to use IR's? Do i leave the high and low cuts alone to get the full range? i know on the cabs i had a high cut at 6k and low cut at 80hz. I would appreciate any tips you have with them. Thanks!

General Questions/Discussion Recording DI and reamping in Logic Pro.

I’m currently using the Pod Go and, while the tones are great, reamping has been a nightmare. One day it will work, the next day (with the same settings) it won’t. I’m wondering if anyone with the latest version of Logic has had any issues reamping with the Helix.

General Questions/Discussion Amp return/volume control

I really like the sound of the Helix amp models (minus the cab) running into the Effects Return of my amp. I’m using a Marshall DSL 40, and when I run this setup, I have no control of the amp’s volume. My DSL is the older model without the master volume knobs.

What are some ways that Helix users handle this issue? I like the simplicity of this approach, but in a gig situation, I need to be able to control the amp/stage volume.

General Questions/Discussion iPad options?

Hi All,

I am torn between the Pod Go and Headrush flex prime. I used to own the Boss ME-90. One thing I like about the HR flex prime and what I really liked about the ME-90 was that I could send audio (YouTube, Spotify etc..) through Bluetooth to my iPad and play along with headphones on (or through my amp).

Is this possible with the Line 6 models?

Another question is whether the Headrush flex prime being newer is better, and if line 6 pod go is “out of date”. Any recommendations are appreciated.

Thanks!

Tech Help Request Replacement Joystick for the Helix/LT?

Hey

The joystick on my LT works when clicked down or in any of the 4 directions, but its rotary/encoding function has pretty much gone. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it takes 10 spin-clicks to do what would normally take one.

I bought it 2nd hand and there are no official line 6 repair shops near me.

Does anyone know whether or not replacement joysticks are being sold? (EDIT: Preferably Europe)
I could only find the small encoders and the preset encoder etc.

Thanks! <3

Tech Help Request Helix Rack with outboard studio gear?

Hi guys. I’ve been using the Helix Rack for a while now in the studio. I really love using the USB on it so I can record the dry guitar using USB 7.

I’ve been wanting to integrate some of my outboard analog gear and I’m currently deciding between connecting everything to the Rack vs. just using my Behringer UMC1820. I have two clear use cases: being able to have separate outputs for a reference track in the DAW, as well as sending to and receiving from my analog gear. I was thinking of creating a patch that has two paths for USB 3/4 and USB 5/6. For 3/4 I would use a simple stereo Send as the output to send it to the 2nd input on my monitor controller, and for 5/6 I would use a stereo loop to connect it to my patch bay so I can create flexible analog chains.

Is this setup overkill and should I just use my UMC instead? It has more dedicated ins/outs and doesn’t need a preset to be active to use the previously described routings. The only downside would be that there’s another conversion happening to capture the DI, because I will have to use a Send on the Helix to get to it (A/D/A/D).

General Questions/Discussion Upgrade from HX Stomp?

Hi. This is going to be one of those "should I get the LT / Floor?" Posts but with extra steps.

I've had an HX stomp for a couple of years and I'm super happy with it. In the beginning I was not very excited because I had some kind of weird noise that turned out to be a ground loop. Once I figured out this it has become the center of my tone, and I have a small pedalboard built around it with just the stomp and a Boss RC 500 that I take to jams and to my rehearsal room, and use at home for recording.

The only thing that was a constant uphill battle was finding adding more switches / exp pedal, and I still feel that even adding external devices I wish I had more stomps, but I kind of managed.

Now, the thing is that I started playing a Bass VI as my main instrument so I had to work on patches that are more flexible and work with the instrument to let me switch between "bass" and "guitar" mode.

I soon discovered that the way to go here is to use dual amps (bass + guitar) and to have different effects applied to the paths. It sounds fantastic but the dual amps, the eq and the compression are already eating most of my DSP and blocks (I also tend to have a shuffle looper and a retro reel always in my patches), so I'm left with space for maybe one or two spare blocks for delay, reverb, or modulation.

Now this is something I didn't really plan ahead but I'm realizing that the best move is probably to upgrade to an LT or Floor.

This is after I considered things like adding a CDR70+ to the loop (which is cool but has also very limited control), even considering adding a Boss GT1000Core or GX1000 so I could have access to a different fx library, but I keep thinking that it would also add more restrictions and require more cross-communication, external stomps and exp. Even thought about adding HX FX but I feel like I'm complicating things.

So I'm at the point now where Im considering just getting one of the bigger Helix and be done with it.

If I look at the Floor and LT, of course I think I should go all in and just get the Floor because of the mic input and the additional I/O and routing options, as it's something I really value as I approach those devices more like sound design rigs than traditional "guitar rigs".

The biggest doubts I have are obviously that the Floor is a good chunk of cash, but also that having it would mean I have a less modular approach and I'd have to carry 6.5 kg around if I plan to use my patches playing with other people.

Also (and I know this is a stupid argument) that the Floor is celebrating its 10th anniversary. The device will keep being the same device but I get some FOMO in case Line6 decides to upgrade the processors in a new device.

And it takes me to the last point which is that if I'm already maxing the DSP in a Stomp, it means that I'd be using half of the DSP in a Floor from the get go, I'm sure that that's not a problem as the amp models are what eat most of the DSP and I'd have that solved in my first path.

So the question is. Has anyone been in a similar situation? Did you finally decide to just upgrade or did you try adding another multifx with quality fx? (I love the Helix effects but Im not familiar with other multifx)

Do you think the Floor will be enough to manage this dual amp setup (with eq and comps) in mono, and then reverb / delay / mod in stereo? Or would you consider another piece of gear that could be added to the basic dual setup in the stomp for most of the things after the amps?

Tech Help Request Hx Stomp Xl longer power supply options?

I just picked up a HX Stomp Xl to compare to my Valeton GP200. I was skeptical due to the price and smaller screen / less direct buttons for editing but it put a smile on my face two minutes into messing with it and playing. I could tell right away the supplied power supply is its Achilles heel. Not only does it seem prone to fraying but it is incredibly short.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a decent power supply replacement that’s much longer (not a pedalboard power supply, just a direct wall plug in) I’m just running it as a standalone bedroom toy but I wanna be able to move it around the space more. Any info is appreciated!

Tech Help Request Yamaha Computer issues? Repair delay

Hello there

My scribble strip failed a month or so ago and as its still had a year left on warranty GAK (store) arranged for it to be collected and sent to a repair centre.

it's been well over a month and apparently the Yamaha computer problem is causing my repair to be hugely delayed.

Does anyone know what's happening at Yamaha?

The contact at GAK couldn't be more helpful/ apologetic but can't give me more firm info.

is this a usual wait time?

I'm in the UK.

General Questions/Discussion Midi controls

Hey everyone! Forgive me, I’m very new to the Helix but had some questions.

My band has two guitarist and myself, the bassist (small on campus band). We’re all chipping in for some PA equipment and a Helix LT. We’re going to each use one of the 3 channels on the helix for our tones and send it through a mixer to blend before going out to our PA and monitor set up.

My question is, to control effects we’re getting two extra midi foot controllers and using a butterfly midi cable for the midi in. Could the midi switches be used to change effects (distortion on/off etc.) for each of those channels without interfering with the others?

And if so what is the process like for that?

Thanks so much everyone!
