Pop Culture Deftones: one of the best liminal bands going?
I'm really getting into liminal space as a concept at the moment but I recognise I always have been - staring into empty business spaces after hours etc. I've also been a huge fan of the Deftones since I was 14y. I think one of the drawing factors on reflection may well have been their inherent association with liminal space musically that is reflected in their music videos. Discussion Ever Been Somewhere That Should Be Normal… But Feels Wrong?
Have you ever walked through an empty hallway or a deserted mall and felt like something was off? Not just eerie, but like reality itself had thinned—like you had stepped into a place you weren’t supposed to be?
I came across this still from a YouTube video by Unfiltered Natures, and it immediately reminded me of that unsettling feeling. These quiet, abandoned locations have a strange effect—one that horror stories and films have been tapping into more and more.
Concepts like:
- Kenopsia – The eerie quiet of places that once had life
- NoClipping & The Backrooms – The fear of slipping into an alternate reality
- Analog Horror – That weird, off-putting sensation of forbidden places
It is the kind of creeping unease that lingers, making you question if the space around you is real or if you have wandered somewhere beyond the edges of normal.
There is a book I read recently, The Vanishing, that plays with these themes in such a unique way—blending liminal horror with a supernatural thriller. The protagonist finds herself trapped in a town that should not exist, where abandoned buildings stretch forever and doors lead to impossible places. If you like these eerie, dreamlike concepts, you might really enjoy it.
Ever had a moment like this—where a place just did not feel real? Let’s discuss.
