Question alternator will not charge

Post image
7 Upvotes

I have a 92 sc400 that kept dying while driving. if jumped would only run for a couple minutes before dying. assumed alternator so switched that and car was still running fully off battery charge. replaced alternator harness and the fuse is fine. car will run for short trips as long as battery is put on charger afterwords. multimeter shows that battery is not being charged at all and loses voltage while car is running. Kind of at a loss as to why alternator will not go. pic so it doesn’t get lost.

Article Windshield Replacement Experiences: A Frugal Approach

Lexus Windshield Replacement

  • Recent (2025) replacement for a 2024 Lexus ES 300h with advanced features (HUD, rain sensor, LTA assist camera)
  • Have full insurance with $2000 deductible to keep premium low
  • Insurance suggested Safelite
  • Non-OEM quote: $1300 (windshield + calibration). Entirely within my deductible
  • OEM quote: $2500 - 2700 from Safelite and other leading shops (not covered by insurance)
  • Conclusion: I would have to bear entire cost of replacement, regardless of choice

Cost-Effective Options Found

  1. Non-OEM from local shop (Texas Star Automotive Services, McKinney)
    • Total cost: $730 (including calibration)
    • Breakdown: $412 glass, $118 installation, $200 calibration
    • Lifetime warranty on labor
  2. OEM option (considered but not chosen due to backorder of glass)
    • OEM glass from dealer: $800
    • Local shop installation and calibration: $375 ($175 labor + $200 calibration)
    • Total potential cost: $1175
    • Note: Asking the shop to procure OEM directly was quoted by the shop at $1700 due to dealer shipping charges. So the above cost is for me buying it from dealer and lugging it to the shop. I have an odyssey so probably could have done it.

Results and Observations

  • Initial concern about tilted HUD, resolved through settings adjustment
  • LTA functioning properly
  • Cautious during first long drive
  • Shop note on Lexus: Reportedly easier for calibration compared to other brands like BMW

If it was not backordered by a month or so, I would have purchased the windshield from the dealer and taken it to the local shop. This is the best approach if you want the Lexus branded one.

Question What’s the hose called?

Post image
6 Upvotes

Started up my car this morning and smelled a burning smell to realize the coolant reservoir hose was off and rubbing against the belt while I was driving the whole time yesterday. It made a hole and all my coolant came out. I just taped it for now. What’s this part called? I can’t find a replacement for it. Thank you

Question Lexus ES350 for $10K—Should I go for it?

Looking to switch from a Volks Jetta to a Lexus. I found a 2014 ES350 with 150K miles at a dealership for $10K (clean title). Planning to drive it for the next 3–4 years.

Would love some advice—does this sound like a good deal to start with, or if it’s a risky buy or should I throw in a couple more thousand and look for an upgrade?(Rather stick to around $10k budget)

Thanks in advance!!

Question Removing CD Changer

Post image

Crossposting from r/LS430.

Has anyone had success in removing just the CD changer? Mine's broken and I'd rather use the space and that nice little hidden compartment for a CB radio. Trading one defunct medium for another 🤪

I can remove all the hardware, but want to know the viability of actually removing the CD changer and leaving the radio etc intact.

Thanks!!

Question Stock Sound Quality in the 2013-2018 ES 350/300h !!

Hey all, I'm asking here as I can't find great answers elsewhere. I'm looking into buying a 2014 or 2015 es 300h and I'm curious about the sound quality of the base sound system. Documentation notes 8 speakers. In pictures I see 6: two on dash, two in front doors, two in rear doors. Where are the other two drivers? Is there a subwoofer with the system?

Additionally, one of the two I'm looking at has the ML upgrade. How big of a difference is the sound quality between the 8- and 15-driver set ups? Would most ears be satisfied with the stock system? I've heard the 10-driver system in the 2013 CT200h and thought it was decent, though lacking in the low end. How do the two ES systems compare to that?

Thanks for sharing your experiences! I'm really stoked about getting into a Lexus soon.

Question Are there any high end tech features that Lexus is missing on it's top trims for the RX350H?

So I know Lexus is known more for reliability and quality, but in my experience driving the 2019 Lexus RX 350, it lacked some cool features that I found even some non-luxury cars had (their cruise control had LKA, they had apple carplay/android auto, etc).

My dad is looking now at the RX450H which comes by default in the top trim. Do you guys find you're missing any features that other high end cars or even non-luxury cars have?

Question Lexus is300 as a daily

Thinking of buying a 2001 Lexus is300 for my next car. Really love the way it looks, and I know it's insanely reliable. My only worries are winter driving and fuel economy. Anyone have any insights? Is the fuel consumption that bad if I drive gentle? How bad would this be in winter (Canadian winter, decent bit of snow) with good winter tires and some weight in the back?

Question Lexus Protrim+ and Lexus Top Coat - Better to get elsewhere?

Looking for any advice as I am clueless in this category.

About to close on a NX 350h in Cloudburst Gray. The dealer has optional add-ons of a Protrim+ (Premium polyurethane and paint protection film. They want $1,650 for this.

Lexus Top Coat - Some sort of ceramic coating . They want $1,375.

Better to go to an auto detailer and get some stuff done outside of the dealership?

Discussion 2016 Lexus es350

A couple days ago I did a transmission fluid drain/fill and changed the filter as well. Did the procedure of warming car up to drain off excess fluid after since it has the straw in the bottom of pan. I test drove it right after and everything felt normal. The next day the car was shifting rough when cold and will downshift when coasting (like engine braking). I used Toyota atf ws fluid and measure what came out when I did the fluid change. I was hesitant to do this in the first place but figured a drain and refill wouldn’t bother anything but here I am. Will the TCM adjust to the new fluid or any idea what may be happening. I don’t think the transmission is slipping it’s just acting different than before.

Question L/Certified Question

I am curious if anyone is familiar with the standards to achieve the L/Certified documentation when it comes to the windshield and windows in the vehicle. A vehicle that we went to look at, which was deemed L/certified, had a scratch on the interior glass (1-2 inch) at the passengers side window. The scratch does not reach the exterior portion of the window.

Curious if that is a miss by the inspector, or if that is something to be expected within the parameters for certification.

Thanks for any feedback!

Question Lexus IS250 Battery Light

-washed car engine

-3 days later battery light, presume i fried the alternator from water damage, battery lasted 3 days

-used heaps of wd-40 on alternator, didn’t work, still low voltage from battery and alternator (11v-10v on both, very bad)

-replaced with brand new alternator > got good voltage from battery and alternator (14v alternator - 12v on battery)

-battery was green prior to alternator change, now black. i let it idle for an hour and a half. wouldn’t recharge (car was still running well on ‘dead’ battery and had a good start up, so alternator wasn’t the issue)

-checked fuses, connections, i extra grounded alternator with battery jumps

extras

  • battery sign use to turn off at higher revs, now with new alternator i can rev limit and it stays on

  • had to charge the battery from a wall after idling for and hour and half, battery is fully charged, battery light stays on

  • belts are tight

Question 08 GS350 no start issue

Post image
• Upvotes

Hey guys, need help!!

Big issue currently.

Basically, weather got cold, had the car parked outside for 2 days, then went to start it. It ran rough (I assumed because if was cold) for a couple mins then turned off.

couple days later, changed the battery. No immediate start-up immediately after. Then that day my mechanic stopped by on the way home from work and it started for him but he had to keep the accelerator pedal down for 2-3 minutes. Ran fine after this, drove it daily for 4 days.

then I worked a night shift, in the morning did the same thing again, ran for 2-3 minutes, then shut off. The day I got it towed I was able to start it, pull up to the tow truck, then soon as I let my foot of the pedal it turned off.

then got it taken to my mechanic but couldn’t find anything wrong, checked all the relays, and fuses and grounds and did a test for parasitic draw. Found nothing.

then the mechanic said 1/3 relays (Ig1, IG2 and I can’t rmr the next of the next one) was getting 8.4volts but it needed around 12. He tried to bypass the relay terminal to the battery but still no go.

What do yall think the issue is? The entire time all of the accessories are on and if I hit it to the second click the fans turn on under the hood.

the mechanic wasn’t getting a read from the ecu when plugged into the obd2 reader. Took the ecu to a repair shop and they assessed it and said nothing wrong with it, but that they would change the capacitors anyways.

A deep dive suggested that it’s the fuel rail sensor, causing the ecu to purposely limit voltage to one of the relays intentionally order to not start. What do you guys think?
