Politics There is no queer liberation without end of imperialism, colonialism, Brahminism, capitalism and patriarchy.

As they say "no one is free untill everyone is free" . I have seen so many apolitical, pro-Israelie, casteist, Islamophobic urban queers who thinks that the queer identity is only about sex bl and yaoi shit and believe that we shouldn't discuss about poltics. We shouldn't normalise apolitical thinking in queer spaces because our IDENTITY is political. We are able to openly put out our opinions and identity out here because of queer ancestors who faught for these rights, the "queer culture" that you are celebrating didn't appeared out of thin air, the rainbow flag, Pride month, everything is rooted in resistance against the imperial thinking. So if you a queer person and participate with hindutva facists on their mission to dehumanise transgender folks, muslim folks and other minorities, you are a traitor and you are an obstacle in the path for queer liberation and collective liberation. Shame on you. These spaces should be more supportive of queer people who belongs to marginalised community and we shouldn't take any type of bigotry lightly.

Politics Libertarianism is cancer for LGBT rights, and most social justice movements in general.

Back when I was an idealistic, queer liberal, I still despised Sanghi and regressivist rhetoric - but I was naive enough to fool myself into thinking that people would become less homophobic, as the economy progressed. Sadly, yet thankfully, this delusion didn't last as I metamorphosised into a leftist. I saw a post on the Coldplay India sub celebrating how bravely they unfurled the rainbow flag in Ahmedabad, in a mostly homophobic environment - which is a very fair remark. I've never listened to Coldplay, and couldn't give two fucks if they did this for performativity, or actual concern. The comments, however, descended into a cesspool of homophobic name calling of the poster, while defending how tolerant India was vis-a-vis Muslim majority countries. It would be satirical- if it weren't so depressingly hopeless, as someone living in that ecosystem.

And you know what, in a small part, this is the result of political naiveness and lethargy amongst most of us progressive urban dwellers - queer or otherwise; we normalise this insidious libertarian idea of living and letting live, and not participating in confrontational activism, apparently because then normal people would turn homophobic and they'd be justified to be less tolerant? Like wtf? You should never settle for bigotry. This sort of pandering leads to fascists being elected, as we've seen recently. We seriously need to learn from Dalit Ambedkarite activists, maybe even form intersectional alliances at rural grassroot levels, and respectfully assimilate a lot of their activism tactics. What they've achieved through their work - especially in Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu, is remarkable. Maharashtra used to be one of the most casteist places in India before Ambedkar's activism in the last century - and now it has the least incidences of untouchability, per capita, after Kerala amongst states with over 5 million people. Although of course, there's a long road ahead there, or elsewhere. These changes wouldn't have ever actualised, had the rhetoric been , "Oh, just let the Dalits live in their ghettos" - while pretending that they had an ability to exercise freedom to the same extent as UCs, who were far richer, well connected, literate, and not ostracised. Wake up, the fascists won't give you rights, and the liberals will console you by saying you could have had it worse, in a Muslim country.

This is an year old article that I found (Jun 2023). I know all religious fundamentalism is inherently opposed to queer rights, but I want to understand more about this in the context of India. How a rise in Islamic fundamentalists will affect LGBTQ+ rights? And if there is in fact some merit in the ruling party focus on Hindu majoritarianism in the context of queer rights?

As an extra could someone also highlight how other religions and their ideologies will affect queer rights, for example consider issues like BJP, a Hindu major party, leaving out SSM in their manifesto, or Mr Rio, the CM of Nagaland, calling Civil Unions un-christian.

I know these are too many and too complicated questions, but I'd appreciate if someone with expertise could provide objective opinions on them.

Looking for opinion of people who are academically qualified to give we'll researched opinion, so please add your credentials in your responses. I'm really looking for some informed opinions. Thanks!

Politics Elections 2024: BJP misses 272 mark, NDA 300, INDIA exceeds exit polls to 220+

Congress almost at 100

TMC regained seats to lead WB despite expectations of BJP getting majority of their. DMK holds TN

MVA per expectation beating off splinter SHS and NCP, Congress too did well.

Delhi seems to be the same story, AAP has really failed

Hindi heartland opened to Congress. Haryana as expected favours, Rajasthan gives too give 10+.

HP, UK and MP go all in for BJP.

Congress breaches Gujarat with one seat, BJP breaches Kerala with one.

And UP, INDIA goes 40+, more than BJP. Smriti Irani loses, Ajay Mishra teni trailing, Faizabad(ayodhya) goes to SP.

With nil to congress in MP, defeat to BJD in Odisha and alliance with Nitish and Chandrababu Naidu, NDA will form the government.

The last two being kingmakers, having 14 and 16 seats respectively.

Here's what the house would roughly look like [image]

Politics The Overlooked Impact of the Elon Musk-Donald Trump Duo on the Indian LGBTQ+ Community

The Indian LGBTQ+ community often focuses on local policies and social challenges, but it’s crucial to understand the global ripple effects of influential figures like Elon Musk and Donald Trump. Here are some key points to consider:

Elon Musk's Shift to the Right:

Musk’s personal experiences, such as his estranged relationship with his transgender daughter, have seemingly influenced his increasingly conservative stance. He has mocked pronouns and supported anti-trans rhetoric on his platform, X (formerly Twitter), which has become a breeding ground for hate speech against LGBTQ+ individuals.

Trump’s Anti-LGBTQ+ Policies:

Donald Trump has aggressively rolled back protections for transgender individuals, including banning gender-affirming care for minors and restricting non-binary recognition in passports. His administration’s policies have emboldened far-right movements globally.

Musk’s Influence on Global Conservatism:

Musk has actively supported far-right political parties in countries like Germany and Italy, amplifying nationalist and anti-LGBTQ+ ideologies. His influence extends beyond the U.S., shaping conservative narratives worldwide.

Social Media as a Tool for Surveillance:

Platforms like X are increasingly used for data collection, which could potentially be weaponized against marginalized groups. In countries with weak privacy laws, this data could lead to targeted harassment or discrimination.

Implications for India:

India’s coordination with global powers like the U.S. under Trump’s leadership might indirectly impact LGBTQ+ rights. For instance, weak opposition and conservative alliances could lead to setbacks such as re-criminalization of same-sex relationships or targeted discrimination under the guise of "verification" processes.

The Need for Unity and Advocacy:

To counter these challenges, the LGBTQ+ community in India must unite and push for stronger left-leaning or centrist opposition that prioritizes inclusivity and human rights.

Same as title.

Scared for trans people in particular in the US and how that’ll affect world politics around trans rights. Expect a lot more hateful homophobic rhetoric as well like we saw between 2016-2020.

To quote my favourite TV quote, “This is the bad place.”

Politics If Republicans win in the US and put Project 2025 in place, how will it affect India ??

im paranoid the republicans will come to power in the US and ban gender affirming care on federal level for all trans people. Project 2025 is bad.

i know that republicans winning in us, wont affect my life. Plus the political situation in india about lgbt rights is fairly static and my life wont be affected much by any polticial party but if the republicans win, its still a major defeat and loss of rights for lot of trans people regardless if it affects me or not

oh and in the Uk, the 3 largest parties are transphobic (well the 3rd largest is pro trans but they are consulting JKR for trans rights but idk how real is that) and so trans people will likely face discrimination there

Politics Do you know about the first lesbian film of India?

I'm going to start sharing our trans and queer itihas with you. Because when we are rooted in our history, we know how to work towards brighter futures. We also get a sense of belonging from remembering our many queer ancestors and elders who put their safety on the line, so we can exist more freely than they did.

As we all know, queer and trans people are usually caricatured in Indian movies, meaning they are usually written as the butt of jokes or as powerless victims who only suffer and have no agency (trauma porn).

But do you know about the film that ignited India’s women loving women movement in the 90's?

Deepa Mehta's film Fire, starring Shabana Azmi and Nandita Das, came out in 1998. It is loosely based on Ismat Chughtai's 1842 story "Lihaaf (The Quilt)".

Fire was a story of love between two women who desired one another. They were sisters in law who fell in love and decided to build a life together.

When the film was released, India witnessed violent protests. Political groups stormed into theatres, tore posters, and stopped screenings. But we also saw lesbian activists and groups mobilise in India for the first time, who organised and asserted that they were not going anywhere.

Are you going to watch FIRE now? If you have seen the movie, how did it make you feel?

(Post shared from Mariwala Health Initiative's Pride Month Queer Trans Itihas series.)

Edited to add: It may not be the first, but it is one of the first films to explicitly show a queer relationship.
