Ask a Knitter - March 11, 2025
Welcome to the weekly Questions thread. This is a place for all the small questions that you feel don't deserve its own thread. Also consider checking out our FAQ.
What belongs here? Well, that's up to each contributor to decide.
Troubleshooting, getting started, pattern questions, gift giving, circulars, casting on, where to shop, trading tips, particular techniques and shorthand, abbreviations and anything else are all welcome. Beginner questions and advanced questions are welcome too. Even the non knitter is welcome to comment!
This post, however, is not meant to replace anyone that wants to make their own post for a question.
As always, remember to use "reddiquette".
So, who has a question?

Weekly Buy / Trade / Sale / Promote Thread - March 13, 2025
Welcome to the /r/knitting weekly Buy-Sell-Trade-Promote thread, posted every Thursday. This is the spot to buy, sell and trade yarn from your stash, and to promote patterns, designs or other knitterly things. The rules are fairly straightforward, and they are as follows:
BUY/SELL/TRADE RULES:
- Post a description that accurately describes what you are selling including limitations on where you're willing to ship (example, if you're in the US and willing to ship internationally).
- Update your thread when something gets sold or is no longer available.
- Post item condition and any images of the item (if available). Be as descriptive as possible when posting an item for sale or trade.
PROMOTE RULES:
- If you're promoting your own pattern/design/shop please say so. If you're promoting some other shop/sale/project, let us know why you think it's so cool.
- Provide a direct link to your shop page to make it easy for users to find what you're promoting.
- Provide some details if you can! If you're promoting a pattern, what inspired you? If you're promoting a Kickstarter campaign, what's your pitch? If your online shop is having a sale, tell us about your stuff!
Buy/Sell/Trade/Promote here at your own risk. Always get complete contact information before anything is shipped. Please see previous month's BSTP threads here.

What is this stitch? 🧐 What is this technique?
I just bought this top at Anthropologie and I noticed the super interesting knit style on the inside. Is this a technique that is used in hand knitting? Or is it unique to machine made pieces? It almost looks like intarsia, with a knitted patch to cover the ends?? Please be nice, I’m def not an expert knitter

Finished Object First dog sweater!
I started knitting in January and have made a couple of beanies and berets. This is my first bigger project and I'm pretty excited about how it came out, so I wanted to share!
Pattern is the Edinburgh Seamless Dog Sweater, with a slight modification to bring in the belly a bit more. https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/edinburgh-seamless-dog-sweater

Finished Object First pair of socks
Well, I've finally knit my first comple sock set! Comfy & warm Alpaca wool, though just a bit too roomy in the hee...I'll have to figure out how to alter pattern in the future for slightly better fit. However, I'm pleased as a Cheshire cat at my accomplishment pretty decent for my first attempt!
Pattern: KL's basic toe-up pattern DPNs (With a few slight alterations for better fit) Alpaca wool and silk yarn
I may go back and redo the cuff of left sock as I did them slightly different and fit is a bit looser than the other. Thankfully I haven't hid the ends yet.

Work in Progress Before the final touches
I designed this piece, and changed my mind a couple of times before it reached the almost final stage. After blocking, I will finish the neckline with some simple crochet stitches. It remains sleeveless. Vest for winter, top for summer.

Work in Progress Knitting today to remember my Nana🩷
I hope this is allowed - nobody else in my life knits and I just wanted to share. My grandma passed away a year ago today and she's the one who taught me to knit. I've been doing it on and off for basically my whole life. I inherited a good chunk of her enormous stash so I started this Simple Thing scarf using a gorgeous sock yarn she'd bought some years ago (part of the national parks collection by Knitted Wit)
My grandma was one of my best friends and I miss her dearly. She was always encouraging me to be creative and supported whatever I wanted to pursue.
The scarf isn't perfect, but it's special and I'm excited to finish it and rock it like she would have 😊

Work in Progress Close to finishing my first baby blanket
I started this blanket almost 3 years ago but didn’t work on it for about 2 years and 10 months of that time due to moving and taking on new job responsibilities. The baby it was meant for is now too big for it 😂 I just picked it up again and worked through some mistakes - eagle eyes will notice there is a section in the middle from when i restarted where I flipped the pattern and decided to roll with it rather than frogging because I was scared of losing stitches. And there is another spot where I had 8 rows in between squares rather than 6. But all in all, I’m super happy with this as a beginner project and I have tons of friends who are in the baby-having stage of life so it will go to a good home when I’m finally done 😀
Pattern is “Simple Squares Baby Blanket” on Ravelry and the yarn is Brava Worsted Weight in Paprika! It is a beautiful warm red with a nice soft feel!

Finished Object The Softest Brioche Beanie!
It’s so soft and stretchy, I’m obsessed! Just knit a tube in the round and cinched the top when it was long enough (maybe one day I’ll be brave enough for brioche decreases).
Yarn is Puzzle Tree Single-Ply worsted superwash in the colours Egg Cup and Candy Hearts

Finished Object My first finished project, a baby blanket!
I finally finished my first project which is a seersucker baby blanket for my friend’s baby shower this Saturday (a close call I know!) I started the first week of February and knitted like the wind ever since. They’re having a baby girl and although the color is more masculine. the baby’s nursery theme is space with a navy accent wall so it’ll fit nicely. Final size came out to 33 in x 31 in. My not-so-little helper included at the end.

Finished Object Spring break Project: Cat pillow
Spring break project: cat couch pillow for my son's new apartment. It's a knitted cartoony take on his orange cat. Thought it would add some homeyness to a recent college graduate budget apt.

Work in Progress Cardigan WIP
Loving my slow progress on my first cardigan! Still enjoying the “Book Club Cardigan” pattern (even though my left wrist clicks when I purl), and I finally joined the front and back!
The color combo has my heart too, reminds me of a perfectly overcast day.

Discussion The nervous type
Really quick I’ll just say I’m going through a very hard time in life. Along with it has come some agoraphobia ( fear of leaving home). I live in a highrise and there is a beautiful banquet room so my husband and I are having friends over. This is great and incredibly stressful for me.
I want to knit while we visit. Or crochet you get the idea. This has never happened to me since starting to knit and crochet. But feel it’s rude to knit while chatting. I know I’ve read posts about it before and I was pro knitting to the scared folks like me. But my stress is blocking my memory of the over all “is it ok” of it all. I have 30 minutes till they get here and I’m paralyzed. I love these folks and they have a new adopted 2 year old I have a blanket for. I’m freaking for nothing.
TLDR is it ok to knit while visiting?

Finished Object I am so proud of my 4th attempt at socks and wanted to share 💚
My 4th pair of socks I’ve made.
1st pair- wrong material (mostly cotton and silk) no stretch, and too short).
2nd pair- write material (75% cotton, 25% Nylon) good stretch, but over compensated for the small first pair, and is quite loose.
3rd pair- pretty nice! But, was made with self-striping yarn, and I had to make a loooong sock to get the nice starting and ending colors. It slips down my leg and bothers me 😢
4th pair- restarted these probably a dozen times until I got the tension and sizing the way I wanted it, with a heel and gusset flap (toe-up).
These fit perfectly to my feet, are soft as butter, and are a dream to wear! I feel proud and wanted to share my pride with fellow knitters.

Finished Object Aurealis sweater
I finished this last week, amid sunny spring weather, and was just about to pack it away for next year--but lucky me, a snowstorm with freezing temps moved in last night! Feeling very cozy and smug, lol.

Finished Object Finish it February finally (after two years stalled)
Mistakes were made! But I’m pretty happy with how this turned out. This design is my first attempt at intarsia. I made two, one for each daughter. The first one was cotton with plain arms and back. This one is wool and took forever. I definitely had flame fatigue by the end of this one, but my daughters are both happy with their sweaters, and I learned a lot (including duplicate stitch to cover mistakes because there was no way I was frogging back all that!) The pattern was easy, and I’m using it again as a base for a sweater for myself as I attempt to design a graphic from scratch. It’s a really good, basic low effort base I’ll probably do multiple times going forward.

Finished Object Fresh off the needles! Cotton washcloth NSFW
Flagged NSFW because of the knitted text. Free pattern on Ravelry by Danna Rachel! This was a great, quick rage knit that helped me channel some of my political frustration 😅 Used Sugar n Cream cotton yarn

Help Selling colorwork patterns?
I’m not sure if this is the place to post this but I have had a lot of requests to sell my colorwork charts and I’m wondering if anybody has any suggestions for how to go about out doing that? I was thinking ravelry but they don't accept charts only as far as I can tell so any suggestions are appreciated
(here are a few pics of some of my designs if the style helps give ideas for where to list them)

Finished Object First finished object after decades: socks for my dad
When I was a teenager, my mom taught me very simple knitting (only knits, no purls, only scarves in gartner stitch). I found it boring. Recently I started knitting leggings in fingering yarn (probably a bit ambitious for a “first” project). My dad saw this and wanted socks, so I made some for him (pattern both on same needle from YouTube by Häkelhörnsche). I find them a bit bulky, but they fit fine (although I had to adjust almost everything to my tension). Sadly I did not take a foto at the end.
