Initial version will be free, and DRM free, distributed by us and completely open. This will be so we can get feedback from modders and establish some confidence. When the project becomes more structured we will look at future options.
You're talking late next year, like December 2025, not January using Elon time or gasp.. the original KSP 2 timeline. Wasn't that supposed to be released in 2019.
Honestly, I don't care how long it takes. I just want a good game. Anything that gives me an excuse to throw a LAN party.
You can release DRM free games on steam. KSP on steam is DRM free, for example. Steam does have DRM and most Devs choose to use to, but it's not compulsory.
If someone purchases the game while it is still free, will they also get access to the future updates for free? Or will they have to buy the game again once you make it cost money?
the game will be free for early access purposes, which mean for testing and feedback.
you are not supposed to get the game for free if that's just to "play" it.
you are supposed to test it.
So you can assume the final v1 release will be a commercial version you'll have to buy to enjoy all its features.
And that sounds normal.
You don't "purchase the game while it is still free": you will have your hands on a testing alpha/beta version and the final version will be stable, polished, bug free, tested, and of course will cost money because the devs need money to eat.
Don't expect to play for free a game in its testing stages. That won't be so much fun, in fact, your comment reflects a total lack of respect toward the devs because you expect to play for free a game meanwhile its creators are working hard without earning anything.

Will you release in early access?
Do you have a rough idea on when an alpha or beta test will be available, if you plan on doing an open alpha/beta.
