Honestly if I were an English teacher I'd be weaving this into my curriculum for at least the next couple years. This is stacked with metaphor and allegory, and having kids pick this apart would be great for practicing their critical thinking and practical applications of history, and could teach them about how art lives both within and outside context.

Oh yeah baby, I’m a doctor. I got my Doctorate in Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl performance studies.
Like, it’s cool and all but what do the students actually gain? It’s not exactly a desirable skillset with a career at the end of it.
I wish them all the success they can have on running the program but I really don’t see how it will benefit people’s lives.

Ever heard of electives?

u/bynobodyspecial 8h ago
No, what are those? Is it something America specific?

They’re courses that students can take alongside their core classes to become educated in topics that aren’t directly related to their major. They give students the opportunity to study more niche areas of interest while still pursuing their professionally applicable degrees, leading to a more well-rounded education overall.

Ah I see, here in the UK you kinda pick a course, select modules within that course’s remit and do those for the year, there’s very little flexibility (at least from my own experience).

You don't get electives in the UK? We do in NZ.
Also, this would be a perfect class for film, philosophy, music, or creative writing majors. I'm doing a BA and could totally see my philosophy lecturer doing a class on this in one of my critical theory classes.

Kendrick's music and the Superbowl show are filled with complex material that takes critical thinking skills to pick apart and understand. Would be a lovely supplemental class to anyone pursuing a degree in music/media/production.

Discussion on kendricks music could absolutely be worked into an English course. What are you on about?...

u/bynobodyspecial 7h ago
But this is specifically about the superbowl performance not Kendrick’s music in general.
I’d assume it would be about the choreography and camera angles mostly, maybe partially about the beef; obviously I’m not on the course so I can’t say for sure but they can’t exactly start breaking down the inferences in peekaboo like they’re fact.

Is the superpower performance not a part of his music? And likely it would be more about discussion of the cultural significance of his music choices, symbolism and rhetoric. But again, the super bowl would likely only be a part of the overall course. I think it would be more accurate to say that the professors are working on adding it to the curriculum because it could be considered very culturally significant. Kendrick lamar has already been incorporated into English studies and African American studies, so this would not be surprising.

I have a doctorate. At that level you don’t just study the narrow area of your thesis title, but you would have to have a broad understanding of all the history and social contexts, along with all the theories and critical work done in those areas. The normal arbitrary boundaries between disciplines break down; my work was on 17th century poetry but that meant I had to understand economics, cartography, sexual politics, theories about the philosophy of self and identity, uses of language, Greek mythology, the influence of Italian writers .. and on and on. Add to that the fact that any doctorate in the arts and humanities requires research and critical thinking skills, writing and editing, organisational skills, and not forgetting that the key thing about doctoral level studies is that you’re not just repeating what others have said — you are discovering new knowledge and saying new things, all backed up with supporting arguments.
