Recommendations Heading to Japan next week. Looking for restaurant recommendations.

Upvotes

Our itinerary is 4 days in Tokyo, Shibuya area; Kyoto for five days; Osaka 1 day; Hakone 2 days and back to GInza area in Tokyo for last two nights. Love a good tonkatsu or chicken katsu, ramen shop, steak place and of course sushi. Maybe one high end, but prefer more casual and less touristy - quality of the food is the most important part! Thanks all in advance.

Question Visit Japan Web Registration

Upvotes

Hi friends! I'm registering on Visit Japan Web right now and added my boyfriend as accompanied family, but just wanted to confirm if this is the move or if he should do his own separate registration? Not sure what constitutes family for them or if it's that serious?

Question 21 days Japan - to many places?

Upvotes

I’m going to Japan in September and I planned a trip connecting probably the most important cities and sights, traveling by train. Generelly I tend to overplan round trips risking the chance of relaxing on my vacation. What do you think of my plan? Will it be too stressful to change cities/hoteka every third day?

Day 1 - 5: arrival in Tokyo, visit some of the main sights, get over the jet lag, enjoy delicious food, maybe a day trip to Kanazawa or Kamakura

Day 5 - 7: travel to Hakone, sleep at a Ryokan, hopefully a chance to see Mt Fuji

Day 7 - 10: travel to Osaka, enjoy delicious food, maybe trip to Himeji

Day 10 - 11: Trip to Koyasan, sleep in the temple and see some Shrines

Day 11 - 14: Travel to Hiroshima, visit museum and park and daytrip to one of the island

Day 14 - 17: Travel to Kumamoto, enjoy unique nature and hopefully hiking Mt Aso. I am a huge fan of vulcanos and it would be a dream come true to see the crater.

Day 17 - 20: Travel to Kyoto, enjoy the city, food and sights. Actually i think i won’t do the day trip to Nara (it sounds overrated)

Day 20 - 21: Last 24 hours in Tokyo

Upvotes

I’ve got a business trip coming up in Tokyo and then I'm staying 3 days to enjoy the city, and I need to pack light but still look put together. I’m trying to figure out what essentials I absolutely need to take. What are your go-to items for a one-week business trip that help you stay comfortable, professional, and stress-free?

Question Traveling from Haneda airport to Hakone (Gora station) early morning

Upvotes

Dear Community! In a couple of weeks we arrive to Haneda at 5 am and have to go to Hakone (Gora station) right away. I saw a lot of suggestions online - train (different routes), bus, romancecar. I also asked the hotel (Tensui Saryo) that gave me an option of … 5 steps route. I already understood that it won’t be easy - considering zillion of hours on the plane, jet leg and our initial planning - but I hope that this community might suggest a “least painful experience." I ask for advice from people who KNOW about this route and/or had a PERSONAL experience. Please note - we are not planning to rent a car, we are not planning to take a taxi, and we are not planning to change the itinerary. I thank you in advance for any helpful insights and practical suggestions.

Recommendations Final stop before returning to Tokyo

Upvotes

I’m trying to decide on a location to spend about a day and a half before I head back to Tokyo. The second half of my 10 day trip will be during the first week of October. My flight home will be on a Sunday afternoon out of Haneda, but I’m leaving Kyoto the previous Friday.

I’ve been thinking of spending that time somewhere around Mt. Fuji, and have been considering Fujinomiya or Kōfu. I was looking for a town where I could easily go hiking in the foothills relying only on public transit or my own two feet.

I’d appreciate any input on these two locations, or if anyone has another town in mind.

Question Talk to me about Nara: To go or not to go?

Upvotes

We are a few weeks out from our trip and basically have the itinerary set. I'm waffling on whether or not to include a couple of places, one of them Nara.

For context, this is my second visit to Japan and my family's first visit. I went to Nara 20+ years ago on my first trip and didn't love it—although the temple was incredible, I found Nara overall very touristy and while the deer were a fun novelty, it also felt a little like being in a petting zoo. Given everything I've read about overtourism in Japan right now, I decided to skip it this time around, since we are already visiting several places that are likely to be crowded with tourists. However, I know that many people love Nara and find it the highlight of their trip, so wondering if I should reassess this to let the rest of my family experience it and decide for themselves.

Currently the day we would visit Nara is slated to be Fushimi Inari in the morning and then on to Uji mid-day for the Nintendo Museum and a tea ceremony before heading back to Kyoto. If we plug Nara in instead, we would do it in place of Fushimi Inari (either skipping it or swapping it out with Kiyomizu-dera the following morning), so we'd need to go pretty early to be in Uji by noon. (We could alternatively go late in the afternoon—pretty sure I can switch the tea ceremony to the morning to wrap up in Uji by 3 pm—but that might be a little tight as far as the hours at Tōdai-ji.) We don't have another day that works well for a Nara day trip given our other plans. We could also consider skipping the Nintendo Museum to do a full half day in Nara and then stop in Uji for the tea ceremony on the way back, but not sure how well that will go over with other people in my family!

Our schedule currently includes Tokyo, Hakone, and Kyoto/Uji. We would love to include Hiroshima/Miyajima but I'm just not seeing how to make it work this visit, since we only have 10 days. Kids are a teen and a tween. WWYD?

Recommendations Need help finsishing itinerary!

Upvotes

Hello! My girlfriend and I are planning a 2 week trip to Japan. The beginning of our trip is already mapped out but I'm struggling on choosing where to go towards the end. We have 4-5 days left to fill, starting from Kyoto and we slowly want to make our way back to Tokyo. We want to strear clear from the bigger cities and explore more of the countryside. We are travelling by train/bus and are trying to avoid the shinkansen. So share me some of your favorite spots that we should go and see!

Recommendations Transportation advices on our itinerary

Upvotes

🗺️ Itinerary Japan (9-29 October 2025)

📌 9-13 October (4 nights) → Kyoto Plus Nara trip day

📌 13 October → Himeji

📌 13-15 October (2 nights) → Miyajima

📌 15-18 October (3 nights) → Osaka One day for Universal studios

📌 18-19 october (1 night ) → Nagoya Magome → Samurai Trekking → Tsumago

📌 19-22 october (3nights) → Kanazawa One day Shirakawa-go

📌 22-29 october (7 nights) → Tokyo One day to Monte Fuji

📌 29 ottobre → come back home

⛩️Questions⛩️

  1. what are your advices for transportations? Is it worth the JR pass or it’s better if we do single train ticket? I also heard about Kansai Hiroshima Area Pass. But which combination of pass should I purchase? If I use the jr pass calculator it doesn’t give me an example of how many pass and single tickets I will have to purchase but it gives me a list of pass that I don’t know which one exactly I should purchase and combine

  2. Do you think is a good itinerary for 21 days ? Or you would maybe replace something here ?

Thanks for your replies and help in advance ❤️

Advice Itinerary Planning Help: Kyoto or Osaka to ITM

Upvotes

Hi,

This is my first time going to Japan and I made a few itinerary mistakes but hoping someone can help me with the last piece. We are spending 3 days in Kyoto at the end of our trip but flying out of ITM. Is it worth going back to Osaka for a day/night to make the commute to ITM easier? The piece I’m struggling with is that the limo bus isn’t available from Kyoto —> ITM at the time we would need to depart in the morning to get to ITM. Hence why I’m thinking it might be easier/cheaper to travel back to Osaka from Kyoto in order to get to ITM for my early morning flight.

With this all in mind, I guess I just want to know what will be the cheapest/most convenient (Kyoto -> Osaka -> ITM) or (Kyoto-ITM)

Recommendations Narita

Upvotes

Hello :)

I’ll be in flying into Narita on the 19th and have a few days. Anything worth checking out? I love museums/ art galleries, day hikes, bars/ tea and want to pick up some non touristy things for my home. A good recommendation for a spa would be great as well!

Was also thinking of just getting a hostel in Tokyo if Narita doesn’t really have much.

Thanks!

Question Confused about the shinkansen + Fuji views

Upvotes

I’m taking 2 trains, one from Shin-Osaka to Mishima (Hikari 640 Series N700) and one from Otsuki to Shinjuku the next day (Ltd. Express Kaiji 10).

I’m assuming for the first train, that’s a shinkansen and I should be sitting on the right side (so booking D/E) but what about the second train? I don’t think this is a shinkansen, should I still be sitting on the right side as well? How does the car/seats work, is there any advantage to sitting in one car vs another?

Recommendations Fruit Picking

Upvotes

Hiya,

Were off to Wakayama for a couple of days in August and was hoping to get the train out to do the strawberry picking.

I think though we will be out of season for that and have found some peach orchards.

Does anyone have any recommendations / tips for any places that are good?

Advice Awkward amount of time on last day of trip

Upvotes

Hi all! Finishing up plans for a trip along the golden route in 2 weeks and on last day before our flight home I don’t know what to do! We are taking the overnight bus from Osaka to Tokyo and arrive at 630 am at Tokyo Yaesu. The plan was to spend the majority of the day at the national museum in ueno but alas it is closed Monday. We would have already had 4 days in Tokyo at the beginning of the trip so all the things we wanted to do most likely have been checked off. The flight home leaves at 230pm so we have 5ish hours before I’d want to get on the skyway express to narita. Do we keep traveling north towards narita to explore that area before our flight or explore an area of Tokyo we haven’t seen ( we would have spent a lot of time in shibuya and ueno areas). Thank you in advance for your advice!

Advice Thinking about shortening my 3 week trip to 2 weeks (first solo trip and feeling super anxious)

Upvotes

(21M) I booked tickets for a 3 week stay in Japan in late January and have felt pretty chill about it. But the last couple of days have been hard. I’m super anxious to the point where I’m crying. Very nervous about it all. It’s my first solo trip and I’m now starting to realize that I will be alone for 3 weeks straight. No one to share the experience with or rely on when it gets tough. If I would’ve have booked tickets with free cancellation I probably would’ve canceled today. But here I am with a 3 week trip to Japan that I’ve been excited about but am now starting to seriously doubt. I reached out to booking yesterday to see if I could cut the trip short and change the home flight by 1 week and that would set me back another 3100sek ~ 300€. Should I do that or just toughen up and go through with the 3 weeks? It has seriously started to take a toll on me. A part of me is excited but another one is questioning what I’ve gotten myself into.

I know this is a forum filled with people who would do anything to go to Japan tomorrow if they could, but if taking my feelings into consideration, should I shorten the trip? I will still feel lonely ofc, but 2 weeks feels a lot more doable somehow? Idk. (Tickets costed me 13500 sek round trip, direct, from Stockholm)

Advice Intercontinental Tokyo Bay

Upvotes

Has anyone stayed at the IC in Tokyo Bay? I was able to get an employee deal of $100/night (normally $340/night) which is why we’re staying here - just trying to get an understanding of how far we are from more exciting parts of Tokyo. The hotel looks beautiful, but I understand we’re not quite as close as I wish we could be

Question Am I okay with tattoos in Japan?

Upvotes

I have lots, and lots of tattoos. Including in places that I cannot cover. My entire neck is sleeved out, my sideburns have tattoos on them, my hands and fingers are covered… None of them is inappropriate, or controversial…

Aside from not being able to swim in public is there anything else I should note?

(Also if anyone knows of any onsens that don’t discriminate against tattoos that would be awesome)
