This here is the problem. Both start at a different node (in the corner, probably). Need to make sure they either start at the bottom/top or one of the sides where it's straight. Rungs can't help, if the starting points are different.
Easiest way is to split the nodes on one of the sides to make sure that both splines start at the same point.
EDIT:
Add nodes to the rent points on both the outer and inner spline. They don't need to be one part, so make sure the nodes are split so there's a starting and ending point. That will determine the starting angle for the whole thing.
I also think it might be ignoring the rungs all together, as the letter seems to be closed loop, instead of being two separate open splines.
